Super Max's Ultimate Try Kindle Edition

4.9 out of 5 stars 28 ratings

Can Max handle the pressures of being the newest member on the team in a sport she’s never played?

Max always wanted to play the sport of Rugby, so her parents agreed to let her try out the sport.

On the first day of practice, Max meets her new teammates and coach, and her anxiety begins to subside...until they run passing drills! Fear grips Max when she suddenly feels she’ll struggle to pick up the skills needed to do well and will fail at learning rugby.

" I just knew it," Max said. "I am bad at this game,
I cannot catch or pass, and that makes me feel lame."

Will Max be able to tackle, scrum, and kick as good as the other kids on the team?

Can her coach, teammates, and family’s support be enough to help Max reach her full potential and succeed at this new and unfamiliar sport?

"We all work as a team until everything's right,
and we'll help you improve till you reach a new height.
Max, I've seen you at warm-ups. You run at great speed.
With your passing fine-tuned, you'll be just what we need!"

Or will her fears get the best of her, causing Max to give up? Written in rhyme, this book will teach children the power of digging deep and finding the super in you to overcome fears and doubts.

This book includes a Rugby Terms and Rules section for young ruggers to learn the game!

Readers Agree...This book is the ULTIMATE reading companion!

"Love that it shows Max in what is SO normal for kids (and adults) trying new things. Nervous and excited at the same time. It shows how having a support system can really help you through self-doubt. I know this book is about a kid and a sport, but it's really SO much more. Teaching kids to believe in themselves, teaching kids it's okay to feel more than one emotion at a time, teaching other kids to be supportive of others. Love it. And the illustrations are awesome. Great read." Amazon reader

"As a rugby coach and a mom, I love this book! It really represents the teamwork needed on a rugby team and the sense of community that a team can provide. It's great that the book includes some rugby rules and how to play. It's a fantastic way to introduce rugby to little future ruggers. My 4-year-old really enjoys the story. The illustrations are really nice too." Amazon reader

"This book is a great representation of the fact that rugby is for everyBody. Moreover, it addresses the very real fears of being new to something all while representing a happy young girl playing a contact sport! It is a wonderful showcase of teamwork and how sports help girls gain confidence." Ruth DeMott

My athletic self

Written by a mom and lifetime athlete

There's a level of panic one feels when they are new to a team or sport. Will I be good enough? Will the team think I'm lame? I can't tell you how many times I've felt this situation in the over 30 years I've experienced playing sports.

Support is everything, which is what I experienced time and time again, and which is why I wrote this book. I want kids who take on something new to see that although it can be scary, there's great reward at giving it a try.

Super Max's Ultimate Try is such a great book that highlights children trying new things and overcoming the challenges that they face. The story is so relatable and really helps kids understand that they may experience struggles as they try new things, but that if they tap into their own power, they can do anything they want, and excel at it! I also love the graphics of this book so much because they highlight diversity and provide great representation for all different types of kiddos. And I love that we have more books that introduce rugby as an option for young ones. Highly recommend!!

As a parent to little athletes, I enjoyed this book that showed the power of teamwork, but also highlighted personal self-talk. I liked how it started off that the teammate first supported the main character with confidence and then it turned into self-confidence and the realization that teams are there to support you and build you up. Cute illustrations as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely picture book about rugby!

As a family of (former) rugby players and (current) rugby fans, we're always looking for ways to involve our son in our hobby, especially since he's not yet old enough to play himself. This book is the perfect way to do that! It involves explanations of key rugby terms and a wonderful story about Max joining a new team and learning the absolute best thing about rugby: that there's a place on the team for every BODY and every skills level and that everyone has something different but special to offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars This story is real!

For context, I'm a rugby coach, not a parent.

This story is so 'real' in that the character Max could be so many of our girls when they first join our team.
The difference in confidence after a couple of sessions, with supportive team mates, coaches and parents, still amazes me sometimes.

Reading-age wise, I think it depends on the ability of each child, but to me, the actual reading level is closer to the younger 7 than the older 11. However I think the story will still be enjoyable and definitely relatable to the upper end of this age range too.

I can see a few 'world book day' costumes being rugby kit next year!

My only criticism, is that the illustrations that go with the single words 'scrum' 'handoff' and 'tackle' don't go with those words, which may be a little confusing to new players/parents, but it definitely wouldn't spoil the enjoyment of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Little Rhyming Story

It's lovely to see a young girl wanting to play rugby as the focus of a children's story, but the story itself is a little cheesy! I suppose it fits with wanting to encourage young girls to face their fears and get involved in something, even if they think it's going to be scary, but I also think it would have been good to tell the tale without everything being perfect. As an overall story and book, though, it is certainly well presented and pitched at the right reading age.
