Unperfect Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 20,370 ratings

When Mia shows up for the interview at a well-known architecture firm, she only has 27p, a squashed loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter to her name. She needs this job. Even if she is scared to death of the owner of the company.

Max has made a name for himself as
that grumpy northern architect off Dreams Homes (the most popular property design programme in the UK), after he told the famous host that designing affordable, environmentally friendly homes “wasn’t rocket science” and that most of the other projects featured on the programme were for “reight poncy bastads who want to spend a grand on a shite tap.” It turned out that the whole gorgeous-but-rough-around-the-edges-Yorkshire-man vibe was just what the country was looking for – the episode had gone viral and Max was the new, extremely reluctant, pin-up of the building industry.

But to Mia, huge, grumpy men aren’t sexy, they're simply terrifying. She knows from experience that even men of average size can be dangerous. If she wasn’t so desperate, she’d run. She’s used to running. Running away is Mia’s special talent, together with invisibility – survival techniques she’s perfected over the years. So, she’ll put up with Max and his moods, ignore him calling her a
teen emo freak (he’s not to know that her black hair used to be honey blonde or her heavy eyeliner isn’t by choice) and just bloody well jog on. Just try to survive. Try to hide.

It’s easy to hide when nobody really
sees you. But what happens when Max finally opens his eyes?

Unperfect a full-length, contemporary, grumpy boss office romance.

Please be aware - occasional swearing and trigger warning for domestic violence.

Praise for Unperfect:

Five stars for romance, story, world-building and character development.

Loved it, loved it, loved it. Characters just jump off the page. I didn't start reading this until gone midnight and had finished it before lunch the following day. My only regret is that I will have to wait ages for Yaz and Heath's story.

This book was amazing and Mia is definitely one of the strongest characters ever!
Books are Magic Book blog

A true slow-burn with all the feels. Mia is fragile, yet resilient. Max is gruff on the outside with a soft and gooey interior. It’s clear that they’re perfect for each other, and I loved watching their story unfold. I recommend this book to those who are love a sweetly angsty romance that features a woman on the run falling in love with an unexpected hero.

I could not put this down. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I started reading this, but what I got was so much more than I had ever anticipated. This is by far the best book I've read this year. I wasn't expecting to cry. I wasn't expecting to fall in love with these characters.

This is so much more than a typical romance novel - the sex scenes are brief and don't include a ton of detail, but the amount given was enough. I was not left disappointed or wanting more. This book wasn't about sex. It was about living through and overcoming years of mental and physical abuse. It wasn't all sad though. There were some light parts to the book, scenes that had me laughing. The British slang took a bit to get used to, but I'm still chuckling over some of the words and I may start stealing some of them in the future. Ponsy cockwomble..

Mia's story is sad. She managed to escape her abusive husband after suffering a fractured shoulder and multiple broken ribs at his hand, and was able to get a job as an IT consultant. The characters (other than the grumpy boss) at this office are fun-loving and light-hearted, sometimes to the extent of doing yoga in the lobby.. kind of ridiculous but probably needed so as not to make the story TOO dark.

Mia hid her true identity, hid her past, and hid her injuries. But she couldn't hide her fear and discomfort. Many reading the book are probably rolling their eyes, thinking 'how could these people ignore the signs right in front of them?' But that's the sad, scary truth about domestic violence, all too often the signs are seen and ignored, or brushed off and forgotten. Even if an odd reaction here or there may get noted, it's later forgotten as the victim has had years of hiding and pretending that things are ok.

Enter sexy, grumpy boss Max, who was (yes a bit cliché) actually a huge teddy bear. He was rough and spoke his mind but had the best heart, and with his recent history of being burned by a woman, he was even rougher and moodier towards Mia, because as soon as he first saw her he felt some interest towards her. Definitely NOT love at first sight. But an interest. So he had his guard up a bit too. Even in her terrorized state she could appreciate a pretty face, and she felt some level of attraction to him too, even though he scared her most of the time.

Eventually it got out that Mia was homeless, and had been 'living' at the office for weeks. She contracted pneumonia and subsequently went into sepsis due to being malnourished and her broken ribs, so was rushed to the hospital where Max learned a little more about her situation. Not enough. Still no clue she was abused. Having no where else to stay, Max eventually invited her to stay at his house. Enter Max's 17 year old stepson Ted, whose mother basically abandoned to Max while she went off to live the life she wanted. So Ted hated pretty much everyone and took it out on Max, who viewed Ted as his own kid.

Mia's story slowly came out more and more, along with me wiping my tears away as her story unfolded. Her inner circles of coworkers/friends finally learned her situation, and not long after Max realized it too. Together they worked with her in different ways to get her the support she so desperately needed. Throughout this whole time she had been getting closer to Max, beginning to trust him, and like him more than just a passing fancy. Their feelings slowly come to light and they eventually get intimate.

Enter evil husband/abuser. Without going into a ton of detail he appeared back in her life, made her feel helpless again, and she barely escaped with her life (again). But she didn't give up. She never gave up. Mia kept fighting, using the tools she had learned from her new friends.

Mia especially is SO well written. Her insecurities, her fears, her flashbacks and reactions, they made my heart bleed. In reading the afterword, it turns out the author Susie Tate works with victims of domestic abuse. She sees their stories and their coping. And she was able to transcribe that into a beautifully sad story about overcoming the near impossible. So very well done.

Mia was down on her luck she needed the job, but when Max showed up, she couldn’t help but feel the panic creeping up, the fear she knew was real. She knew not all men where like her husband, but that didn’t help the fear go.
Mia tried to keep her secret, but her body wasn’t having it and when she ended up in the hospital sick, Max said she was staying with him until she was better.
Max doesn’t push Mia for anything even when he finds out some of her past, seeing her panic he knows there’s more but doesn’t want to push her. He tried to avoid anything that he knew triggered her, and make sure everyone else did to.
After being forced back to her ex and barely escaping with her life, Mia thinks she’s broken and being with Max isn’t good for him, he deserves someone not so broken. Mia tries to tell Max she’s too broken for him but he’s not having it, can Max convince Mia that she’s all he wants and she’s definitely not broken.

This book is dark, but it has a message, that women take the brunt of a lot of bad things when they need to be open to what is right and good for them. Fate places Mia at Max's doorstep, but life's battles is what brings and keeps them together. Enjoy.

This book deals with domestic violence and there were scenes that made me cringed. Mia, escaped from her abusive husband and found a job in Max’s office. She was using her employment there to hide from her husband. Initially, Max did not like her and likened her to an emo teenage. Gradually, she just grew on him. Max could sense that she was hiding something but was still protective of her. It was an interesting read and I liked the cast of characters as well.

I couldn’t stop reading this. I was not expecting it to be so much more thorough on the mental impact of what abuse does to a person. A lot of books that wrote about an abuse victim don’t really go into the mental details of it. Only wham bam they find the ML and then they Have sex, love and etc the end so this was refreshing.
I look forward to reading more. I would also like to see books written about Mature ladies or diverse woman would be nice. But that’s just my two cents.

Amelia aka Mia's character development was pure perfection, it wasn't over done and stayed true to life. I loved the journey to healing for her, so many times in literature the healing work never gets a more than a sentence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tender and powerful love story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 7, 2022
I read romance for sheer escapism and don’t often read romantic fiction with “a message”. I find such books are often heavy-handed, with research shoehorned in to show the author has done their homework and they’re determined to get it on the page to prove the fact. It’s a sub-genre that’s often preachy, rather than entertaining.

Unperfect is NOT one of those books. Susie Tate is a GP and very clearly knows what she’s talking about when it comes to victims of domestic abuse. But from the perspective of a reader, what matters more is that she’s a real writer. Her characters are simply terrific; they have convincing backstories, and from the moment each walks onto the stage they’re believable. And Susie Tate makes us care really about them.

This is an important subject, but it’s handled with great sensitivity. Make no mistake: Unperfect is a seriously entertaining book. Remarkably, it’s both deeply moving and very funny. I read it in a day.

I really enjoyed all of the characters – many of whom I now discover appear in other books by Susie Tait. My favourite may be Yaz who is as mad as a rather large box of frogs, but utterly adorable with it. And I believe she too will soon be the star of her own book. I can’t wait, but meanwhile I’ll be reading my way through the author’s other books.

I really enjoyed Mia and Max's story. It was just hard to picture Max as the Hero until half of the book, when he first appeared I pictured him like twenty years older and not the main character, imagine my surprise when his first POV appeared, and then I kept trying to view him as younger. It worked out in the end and he was such a gentleman. I downloaded this book because of the plot of a starving heroine and a rich Hero, but it ended up being SO MUCH MORE.
