- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2020I was undone by the uniqueness of the plot and the excellent job of editing in this pride and prejudice variation. I do not know why I began reading this book, but it held me spellbpound. The Bingley sisters realistically received their just desserts. Mrs Bennett and Lydia were stopped in their uncouth bullying of their family. The characters were flawed, human and likeable. Thank you for insuring your book was well edited it made reading it more enjoyable, not having to stumble over misspellings etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2020I will be including some slight spoilers in my review....
Ms. Diamond always has a knack for creating pretty unique stories, and stories that are brave considering what topics and themes she decides to tackle. This story is full of things that will leave purists and certain people shocked for sure. But it’s a great story nonetheless.
I guess I’ll start with the positives. I loved Jane’s character in this story. She has a spine and she has personality. We get to meet Mr. Darcy senior in this story and he was just so charming. Viscount Nicholas Carlisle was another enjoyable character, considering he took the role normally written for Colonel Fitzwilliam. That being said, the good colonel is more Wickham in this story, and while it was interesting to read, I’ll get into why I deducted a star in a bit. But I will end with also having enjoyed the “mature content” in the story. I can read chaste and downright smut. So I don’t mind either way. In this case, the love scenes were spicy and sexy. But if you hate these scenes, heed the warnings.
Now, I debated in deducting a star but the ending sealed it for me. First of all, I thought the storyline was interesting and again, brave. Considering the choices Lizzy and Darcy made (some not being their choice at all), I was still shocked at how the story unfolded. I’m so used to this type of thing being a no no in regency JAFF. Modern stories, no biggie. Here? Damn. But I went with it.
That being said, the ending was so anticlimactic. Ms. Diamond has written such shocking plot twists or action in the past, including my fave of hers Rain and Retribution. Here, it fell completely flat which left me so disappointed. Considering everything James and Richard could’ve done, I was left wanting more. Moreover, there were so many useless characters here that I kept wondering whether they’d serve another purpose, such as the Bingleys or Wickham or Richard himself. They may as well have been left out honestly.
The epilogue is where I also have mixed feelings. I loved Jane in it. I wasn’t a fan of where the author took the story in the epilogue, but I’ve never been a fan of that particular type of ending involving Lizzy or Darcy not being around...if you get my drift. That’s just me though.
My final thoughts are related to Thomas, Duke of Leeds. He is certainly a sympathetic character, which the author aimed for. It’s rather hard to like him considering his actions, but he endured emotional turmoil in his life so that needs to be taken into consideration. Still, his actions were horrific. All’s well that ends well though I guess *shrug*
I’ll never hesitate to read this author’s stories. This one was just difficult to read. Glad I did though.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2023I had originally bought this on audible but had to buy the book too to read when I couldn't listen. I couldn't put it down! This was a very different approach and had a lot of twists and turns. I bawled through the epilogue and am still a bit raw from it. If you are looking for a P&P book that has a fair amount of angst, small amt of Wickham, and Miss Bingley getting a good set down, give this one a shot. Ms. Diamond does not disappoint!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2020I figure I have read over 250 P&P variations and while I am not terribly picky, when I find a really good one, an excellent one, I make sure to review it. This particular story captured my heart because the characters - all except one and I could see why she gave this character a different personality- were at their essence, presented as more wholly themselves, in my eyes, than in many other adaptations. As if the author understood their mettle and presented the characters with more of what was the best about them and made the challenges they faced different than in the original. There are only so many ways one can take the same handful of characters and experiences and mix them around, and the JAFF community is quite ingenious in this fashion. This author takes beloved characters and gives them a different set of challenges which was refreshing. I did not want this book to end. I cannot wait to read more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2024LL Diamond does it again. Good storyline (and great narration of the audiobook). This is another one that goes in the repeat pile.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2020I don’t know if it’s because of the corona quarantine, but the past couple of weeks have been like Christmas Day on the JAFF front. Thank you to the many authors releasing new material as we adjust to the new normal.
Ms Diamond’s writing has matured over the years. Undoing is a joy to read. The plot moves briskly, in part because of the effective use of letters to mark time. The dialogue is natural, and most of the characters are well developed. I particularly enjoyed meeting this Jane and her love.
There are a few extraneous characters, though, namely the Bingleys, LCdB, the housekeeper, and Richard. The final conflict is a bit anticlimactic, not to mention a little pointless. So much more could have been done with that plot. After all, if a character is going to have a Big Secret, why not use (but not exploit) it to its fullest?
I applaud Ms Diamond for taking on Thomas and his issue. Not all readers will approve, but it was a circumstance that existed back then and is certainly worth addressing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2023This story might shock some people but I loved a different take to Darcy and Elizabeth’s love story. This has very few similarities to the canon so I would call it a reimagination. Moreover, this was the first story I read where Richard had a bad character and instead his elder brother, the viscount, was Darcy’s friend. There were only few pages with Wicham too so all in all this was refreshing to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2020I enjoyed this story. It was far off the pride and prejudice mark but still a good book. Darcy was not prideful and Elizabeth had no prejudices. The second half was a bit boring and dragged. The intimacy wasn't pornish and excessive as some states. What annoyed me was the number of times it was mentioned that Alexander was nursing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Predictable but Delightful Read
I don’t want to give any spoilers, suffice to say that is a delightful read indeed. The aspects author touched in this story did happen in Regency society, in Victorian period and even as late as1950s.
The novel had an undercurrent of what was to come, and author didn’t shy away in exposing the plot quite early in the story, because the strength of this story was not the suspense but struggle of honour, principle, love, passion and remorse.
Having read a lot of Novels from that era and times before it, I have no compunction with these type of plots, a five star from me and a recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't just read the blurb, read the book
I’ve read a handful of JAFF where Elizabeth was married first, to someone other than Darcy. In general, it’s not my cup of tea and I’ve always had mixed feelings. It is a hard pill to swallow. In L.L. Diamond’s new novel, Undoing, Elizabeth is married to a duke but the author doesn’t take the path other authors choose. What a story and what a twist Ms Diamond came up with!
I think, for me, as long as Elizabeth and Darcy are not out of character, I’m good. I suppose when one writes a variation, in the Jane Austen fan fiction world one can’t completely keep everyone’s characteristics as it would lead to the same story. I’m afraid Ms Diamond likes to turn nice characters into evils as she did it in An Unwavering Trust where her victim was Mr Gardiner, in Undoing, her victim is Colonel Fitzwilliam. First, I didn’t like this change, but she balanced it very well with the Viscount’s character and his relationship with Darcy. I guess, by reading all of the books by the author make me well-armed in some ways by now.
Although Ms Diamond chose to change Colonel Fitzwilliam’s characteristic, she did not change Caroline Bingley’s or Lady Catherine’s character. I have to say, as much as I don’t like Miss Bingley, she was masterfully crafted in Undoing (along with Mrs Hamilton, the Duke’s housekeeper). Karma bit back in both cases.
There are two scenes which stand out for me, for 2 different reasons. The first one is when Darcy and Elizabeth meet for the first time (Elizabeth is already the Duchess of Leeds). Darcy is what we know from Pride and Prejudice. As they are from the same social circle, he is nice and agreeable, but also a bit stiff. The author found the perfect balance; my first thought was that it could have been written by Austen.
The second scene I loved was the carriage scene when the duke and the duchess go to Pemberley. I needed lots of ice cream to eat Elizabeth’s pain away. It is a very intense scene.
What I love the most in this book is how smooth and finely tuned the relationships and friendships are in the story. I love Darcy’s father. What a man! Just how I imagined him from what we know of him from P&P. I adore the bond between the duke and George Darcy; and the friendship between Darcy and his cousin, the Viscount.
I mentioned in all of my LL Diamond reviews how much I love how she plays with names. I think she peaked in Undoing picking the best possible first name (with all its connotative meanings) and giving it to -from a story point of view- the most important character. Utterly brilliant and I laughed my head off.
Reading the blurb, you might think “I don’t want to read a book where Elizabeth is married to other than Darcy”, I promise L.L Diamond and Undoing will not disappoint you. It has a very unique twist and it’s very cleverly written. It is funny, heart-breaking, steamy, witty and entertaining. I need to mention that it does contain quite graphic parts, though.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Touching
I love this story. I love the fact that Darcy is not as nearly as haughty as usual. I love the fact that they both fall in love at the same time and their love endures.
Definitely a different perspective and an original plot. If I had one item to complain about is that I love Colonel Fitzwilliam and I don’t like it when he is bad. Wickham was a nonentity and Miss Bingley a pain as usual but Mr Bingley got mentioned a grand total of two times. They even called him spineless, lol! An excellent book worthy of reading more than once.
