Given how many of us have played rpgs, I’m surprised more people don’t write fantasy in second person. This story does it well, providing a tidy little fantasy in a format that fits well.

Such a beautiful story. The writing style feels almost poetic and flows so well. Love really does heal all wounds. This was such a quick read that if you blink and it’s done. I applaud the author for being able to pack a punch in such a short time. The found family aspect of this story really pulled on my heartstrings. This story to me feels like a love letter to the LGBTQIA+ community. Well executed and beautifully written 🌈

You are born different. It makes people fear you. Even those who are supposed to love you and protect you from the world.

You are different, but you want the same things that any human being wants. Love, tenderness, acceptance. Is it true that the only way for those who get rejected is succumbing to violence and hate?
Read this beautiful short story by the talented Rebecca Crunden to find out.

“Fire at Her Fingertips” is the second short story I’ve read by this author. I fell in love with her unique writing style, and I’m looking forward to reading her novels. Her characters are so real despite being magical creatures. You can feel their pain and their struggle, but what is even more important – at least, for me – you can also feel their happiness and joy.

“Fire at Her Fingertips” is definitely a magical story. And its magic comes not only from its fantasy setting but from the profound message it contains. Everyone is different – and everyone has a right to be so. And it is love and acceptance that make each living creature shine.

"Names were for things people wanted to remember, and your parents would prefer to forget you. But fire screams too."

This line from the opening page sets the tone for the piece. Encara, that not-so-forgettable ember, came into her own after striking out blindly into the world on her 18th birthday. The addition of Halia provided the perfect yin to her yang as she taught Encara to be fearless and to embrace the love of others. Although this is a fantastical tale, the magical element came second to the human need for friendship, love, and to have a place in the world.

"Fear sounds the same for every creature, and no one should be afraid alone."

That's what sets this story apart. Rebecca is a talented writer and displayed that in this short piece.

This was such a wonderful story. Heartbreaking and heartwarming and the 2nd person POV was super cool!
It's one that's stuck with me and I find myself thinking about it quite often.

I finished this short story quickly and fell in love with it! Even though it was 16 pages, it told so much at a realistic pace. Crunden's words were not only filled with storytelling but poetic as well. I was able to visualize what I was reading perfectly. It felt like I was watching a film. Overall, I truly enjoyed reading this Sapphic story.

I loved this book so much, it's beautifully written. The second-person POV works well in the narration, and made me identify with the protagonist. I empathised immensely with her and the journey she went through to find her place in the world. The ending is also lovely and unexpected!

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem

‘Fire at her fingertips’ is a serious gem of a short story.
For a tale so compact Crunden constructs a beautiful tale of finding your place in the world. I’m amazed by her talent to not only write eloquently in a second person tense, but also to provoke gorgeous aesthetics and an emotional response to a character who feels fully formed after page one. This sapphic read may be short but it still feels all encompassing and powerful. I love that Crunden elevates this story of acceptance and love into a paired back form. Just beautiful.

3.0 out of 5 stars A stunningly beautiful second person POV

A stunningly beautiful second person POV. When your own family doesn't want you, will anyone? This is a heart breaking and them heart warming tale of love and magic.
It made me feel things and despair for the characters. Once again Rebecca proves her writing talent is no fluke with an evocative short story that you just have to experience for yourself.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Poetic Tale of Love and Belonging
Reviewed in Canada on January 30, 2023
Crunden's prose is elegant, at times reading as if the words could burn the page, and other times flowing like a gentle river. Her aptitude for imagery is unparalleled, and as my introduction to second-person perspective, has me hungry for more. I have a couple of her novels on my TBR, and this wonderful little short insists I move them up that list.

The only complaint I could find, and why I felt I could only give it four stars, (and I do apologize deeply for those who tire of hearing this) was due to too much unnecessary telling. In some cases the telling was redundant to the showing, others the story felt like it could use more polishing to better utilize showing. Please don't let that deter you, though. It is well worth the time and the money. I promise you won't regret it.
