The Work and the Glory: The Complete 9 Volume Set Kindle Edition
The complete Work and the Glory series is now available for the first time in one eBook. Follow the Steed family on their incredible journey from New York to the Salt Lake Valley. Author Gerald N. Lund here masterfully weaves together historical reality and high-powered fiction. In his hands this combination seems to make the reader an eyewitness to the early scenes of the Restoration, thus deepening one’s understanding and appreciation of those momentous events. The well-drawn plot and fictional characters present a moving, gripping story. Here are Benjamin and Mary Ann Steed, devoted to each other as man and wife, yet at odds over religion; Joshua, their volatile son, who rebels and heads for trouble; the sensitive Nathan, their second son, in whom Joseph Smith’s message strikes a responsive chord; the beautiful Lydia McBride, who captures the hearts of both Joshua and Nathan.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019I love Gerald Lund's book series, "The Work and the Glory!" I read all 8 volumes years ago in hard copy, but had borrowed them from the library. I wanted to read them again and purchased them on Kindle. It's amazing to own them and not take up all that space on my book shelf! This is a comprehensive history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, told through the viewpoint of the Steed Family, who are fictional, but living through real events. Many actual figures in church history are included in the narrative and I learned so much about church history by reading these books. Recommended for members of the Church and anyone interested in learning more about "The Mormons."
- Reviewed in the United States on November 18, 2023The Work and the Glory is without a doubt, the most wonderful series I have ever read. I laughed and cried. 20 years with the Steed family, 1827-1847. The Stress have become family to me and following the Prophet Joseph Smith from she 21 to his tragic death at age 38. The trek West in the last two books was a very emotional journey. I love The Work and the Glory. God bless Gerald N. Kind and God bless The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2013First of all, my favorite type of book is historical fiction. As a historical fiction this series is wonderful. The depiction of real life events, the culture and the day to day living experience in different regions of the US during history are extremely well done. In a good historical fiction I am able to feel and think about what it must have felt to live in those time periods and this book accomplishes this goal. So that alone made the series very well worth reading.
In addition to all of these positive attributes, as a new member of the LDS church, the series has been invaluable in understanding all of the trials and tribulations Joseph Smith, the church and its founders went through as the United States was itself experiencing all of the growing pains of a new nation. It has also been extremely helpful to tie important historical and church events that inspired Joseph Smith to pray for the revelation that created the Church's Doctrine and Covenants
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2021I fell right into this book series. The story was so well written that I felt I was right there living it. The emotions were never out of place. I loved the connection of real history and a fictional family. It made it seem so much more personal.
Gerald N. Lund is an exceptional writer and he never disappoints.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2014I have not finished the series yet. I am about two-thirds of the way through Volume VI. Each volume is more fascinating than the previous one. For members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints it is very inspiring and makes the early history of the Church come alive. One feels he/she knows Joseph Smith and the other early members intimately. For non-members it is an intriguing glimpse of a portion of American history not often taught in school. It follows a fictional family from the early 1800s through -- well, I don't know how far it goes since I'm in Volume VI in the 1840s. But I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys American history and a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2013I love how Gerald Lund has captured the spirit of the church members as they labored to overcome prejudice and evil in the early days of the restoration, and the accurate history of the church from Palmyra to Salt Lake City. Lund is a great writer who pays attention to detail which takes the reader on a pioneer journey they will not soon forget. My love for The Work and the Glory gives me good reading time and again, and no matter how many times I read it I can't put it aside until I have finished every volume. This is definitely a keeper! I'm glad it is now an ebookl.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2023What a moving and it’s sometimes enlightening story of the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter day Saints. How they had to struggle and how they kept being run out of each home that they made. It is sad story in many ways and I don’t think people living in 2023 when I’m reading this book whatever imagine or be able To endure what the people did in the 1800s. I’m quite sure that I never could.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The series is excellent for those who want to learn more about the Restoration period of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I only wish the Steed family was a little smaller, the books get quite sprawling by the end of the series.
