About the author

Dr Samantha Pillay's journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Diagnosed late with congenital hip dysplasia, she underwent multiple corrective surgeries during her childhood. Despite starting school in a wheelchair, Samantha graduated at 16, graduating in medicine from the University of Adelaide in 1992. She broke new ground by becoming the first female urological surgeon in South Australia.
Driven by a vision to provide specialized incontinence treatments to women in South Australia, Samantha became the first urologist in Australia to focus exclusively on female and functional urology. In 2002 she founded Continence Matters, a Centre of Excellence in women's health.
Her leadership extends beyond her practice. Dr Pillay has held numerous influential positions, including serving as Chair of the Female Urology Special Advisory Group for the Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand from 2007 to 2013. She was the first woman to represent South Australia on the Board of Urology from 2003 to 2006, the first female scientific convenor for their Annual Scientific Meeting in 2007, and the first female chair of the South Australian Urology section in 2017.
As a single mother, Dr Pillay has dedicated her career to addressing incontinence, reducing stigma, and educating medical professionals and the public. She developed an online Continence Course to fill gaps in medical education and ensure that healthcare providers are well-equipped to manage this often-overlooked condition.
She is a five-time international Amazon No. 1 best-selling author. Her first book, "The No Recipe Cookbook," is a unique guide for people who don't cook, offering an intuitive approach to cooking that saves time, money, and calories.
Following this success, as a strong advocate for breaking gender stereotypes and shattering the glass ceiling for women, she authored When I'm a Surgeon, the first book in the Inspirational Careers for Kids picture book and activity book series. The series continued with the release of Book Two, When I'm an Entrepreneur, Book Three, When I'm an Astronaut, Book Four, When I'm the President, and Book Five, When I'm the Prime Minister. These books aim to inspire children to pursue their dreams regardless of societal expectations.
When I’m the President has received the following accolades:
• 2024 American Children's Fiction Award Winner
• Golden Wizard 2024 Book Prize Winner
• 2024 Firebird Book Award Winner
• Reader's Favorite Five-Star Review
• Global Book Awards 2024 Finalist
• NYC Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite 2024
Samantha's contributions have not gone unnoticed. She was a finalist for SA Australian of the Year in 2022 and a 2023 State Finalist for the Telstra Best of Business Award in two categories: Accelerating Women and Championing Health.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Pillay emphasizes the importance of dreaming big. Despite her challenges, she achieved more than she ever imagined possible. Her advice to young girls is simple yet profound: "Take your dream, double it, and double it again." Through her work, Samantha Pillay continues to inspire the next generation to reach for the stars and make their dreams a reality.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a very inspirational book, especially for young girls. It shows them that women have the option of being an entrepreneur if they want. Tim simple language, it teaches readers what it means to be one. Shows it a combination of thinking big, working hard, believing in yourself and more.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2022Format: PaperbackThe cover of When I'm An Entrepreneur caught my eye. The title was intriguing and Aveira's illustration of the young woman. Books like these are priceless. Our young and older women need to be reminded of what they can do with the power of entrepreneurship.
From touching lives to doing what was once thought impossible, When I'm An Entrepreneur is a powerful little book. The illustrations were crisp and neat, depicting a possibly mixed-race young woman. This depiction is critical, as all readers should identify with the story.
I wish the story featured a diverse picturization of our world's ethnic makeup. This would add more substance to the already powerful message.
This text is perfect for all young women, regardless of color. Additionally, libraries and afterschool programs can use this text to help young women learn how to create affirmations.
I highly recommend this book to public and school libraries.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2022Format: KindleThis is a beautifully written and illustrated book about teaching girls to reach for the sky and follow their dreams. I appreciate that the author was an overcomer as a child and became a successful surgeon. (Whatever your challenge, you can overcome it and make the world a better place!) It is heartwarming to see the author encouraging the next generation of girls to step up and make a voice for themselves.
I love how the illustrator took a childhood picture of the author and drew her as the main character of the book. The illustrations were bright, colorful, cheerful, and inspiring.
The story itself is encouraging, exciting, and motivating. I think that every child should hear the message that they can achieve anything that they set out to do. However, I question whether the title of entrepreneur is accurately described in this children’s book. First, it is a very advanced word for the age group that I envision reading this book. Second, I feel that these goals and accomplishments could be attributes of many diversified careers. I would have named this book; “When I become successful.”
I appreciated the extra activities that can be explored on the author’s website.
I look forward to reading other children’s books published by this inspirational author and wish her many successes in the future.
I received this advanced reader’s copy free from the author Samantha Pillay and NetGalley. This is a voluntary review, and all comments and opinions are entirely my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is waist of money. Nothing good for kids. No actual facts or anything. It is literally statements saying I can be this, I can be that and that’s all. Not good for anyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2021Format: Kindle"When I'm an Entrepreneur" but Dr. Samantha Pillay checks off so many boxes. The story is full of aspirational language, encouraging readers to imagine themselves achieving success, embodying important qualities for success, and putting in the work. The author's explanation of key illustrations (available on her website) helps parents extend the story for older children ready for deeper conversations. For children (boys and girls) of all ages, it is so important for them to see books that depict successful women — and this book does that beautifully.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2022Format: KindleThis book should be on every young girls bookshelf! It sends a powerful message to girls that they are capable of so much! This book highlights what it takes to be an entrepreneur and introduces this concept/career path to girls who may have never been aware of all they can accomplish in life! I loved the use of positive affirmations and future talk which encourages the reader to picture themself in those roles.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2022Format: PaperbackVibrant pictures. A great message.
Young ones will be exposed to important vocabulary. The simplistic pictures, along with the repetitive text, help the reader grasp the story.
A fabulous read for every library, classroom, and home!!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2022Format: PaperbackThis picture book combines many concepts relevant to today’s society. It introduces the role of the entrepreneur to girls, many of whom have probably never heard this term before. The lively illustrations in the big-eyed style of Pixar movies will easily capture the attention of young readers. The story combines two equally important themes, both practical and aspirational. While showing what the role of an entrepreneur is, the author emphasizes that self confidence and creativity are the tools needed to start you on the journey.
This is a book that is best introduced by a teacher or parent because it really opens the door to new worlds. Once the door is opened, the reader will enjoy returning to this attractive story on her own. My only reservation is that with such lofty goals depicted, a reader might get discouraged at her own less-than-perfect accomplishments. On the other hand, it has been said that your goals should exceed your grasp and this may be just the book that spurs a young inventor or businesswoman on.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing a copy of this to read and review.
