A heart-stirring romance of star-crossed love, feuding familias, and the bonds of sisterhood by USA Today bestselling author Priscilla Oliveras.

Two familias in Texas, both alike in dignity, rivalries, and passion…

Having grown up in the nurturing household of Casa Capuleta, Mariana will do anything for familia. To solve her adoptive parents’ financial problems amid their rapidly changing San Antonio comunidad, Mariana and her younger sisters are determined to win the Battle of the Mariachi Bands. That means competing against Hugo Montero, their father’s archnemesis, and his band and escalating a decades-old feud. It also raises the stakes of Mariana’s forbidden attraction for a certain dark-eyed mariachi who sets her heart racing.

To Angelo Montero’s familia, Mariana is also strictly off-limits. But that doesn’t stop him from pursuing her. As their secret affair intensifies and the competition grows fierce, they’re swept up in a brewing storm of betrayals, rivalries, and broken ties. Against the odds, they vow to bring peace. But sacrifices must be made and consequences weighed for two star-crossed lovers to make beautiful music together.

From the Publisher

From the very first time I read it, I felt like this book was created specifically for me. And I know that I’m not alone. Star-crossed lovers torn apart by the cruel trappings of society is a romance trope as old as time itself. Throw in some Latin flavor with the fabulous Capuleta sisters and a layered female empowerment plotline, and I think there’s something here for everyone.

The author, cover illustrator, and I are all strong Latinas who feel a deep connection to this content, but what I love about Oliveras’s writing is that it’s accessible. Every single one of us has faced adversity in some way, regardless of background.

No matter if you’re team Shakespeare or more of a Tony and Maria fan, I hope you enjoy this lyrical novel influenced by the most popular love story ever told—but this time with a guaranteed HEA (happily ever after).

Latinx Romeo and Juliet!

Latinx Romeo and Juliet!
West Side Love Story by Priscilla Oliveras is a romance you need to read immediately!! As a girl from San Antonio, this book meant so much to me. Seeing my community on the page was life changing. I loved that Priscilla Oliveras gave such a beautiful romance to the Latinx community in the West Side. IYKYK the west side can be rough and unforgiving and yet it is a place where art and music thrive. The culture is rich and the history goes deep, much like Romeo & Juliet which this was based on! As a retelling, the story was an awesome mix of old and new. It was steamy and sweet, it was unpredictable and heart warming. Dueling mariachi bands was such a fun idea and all the family history! That meet cute and the will-they-won’t-they was epic! Angelo was mega book boyfriend material! He’s a good big brother, a sexy musician, a charmer, and so sweet. Mariana deserved that HEA, she has a lot on her shoulders with the band and her family on top of work and life. They steamed up the pages and definitely kept my interest! Oliveras wrote a love story that I will not soon forget. I’m so excited for the rest of the series!!

West Side Love Story is a book with an interesting concept that doesn't hit the mark.

I went into this book knowing from the title that it's based on West Side Story (which itself is based on Romeo and Juliet). And while insta-love isn't my favorite, I knew it was par for the course. However, the insta-love is not by biggest qualm with this book. A lot of what kept me from loving this book was the writing style and the multitude of subplots.

The writing style of West Side Love Story is very repetitive. Part of this is because the characters speak in a mix of Spanish and English, and the English translation is often repeated immediately after the Spanish phrases. I understand that that's often needed, and I'm not the best person to say whether they were all necessary or not because I do speak some Spanish, but instead of building context clues around the Spanish or finding a more discrete way of translating for the reader, the phrases were often repetido inmediatamente, repeated immediately.

This repetition wasn't only with the language, but also with some phrases in general. I the phrase "private lender" was used 14 times and "balloon payment" was used 12 times. That's about once every 23 pages per phrase. These were the two that stuck out to me the most, but there are others as well.

Another issue I had with the writing style was the use of unnecessary quotation marks. Eg: her eyes look as if they were saying "I'm sorry," It happened a lot, and I found it quite distracting and annoying.

This book is fine, I enjoyed the nods to West Side Story song lyrics, and it was cute. If you're looking for some Mexican representation and foster care representation, this may be the book for you. Unfortunately, it wasn't the book for me. 2.5 stars.

If you loved West Side Story I think you're going to love all the little references throughout this book. Likewise if you're a Romeo and Juliet fan.

I loved the meet cute in this book. I loved how fate brought these two together but I also hated how a family fued kept them apart.

I loved the romance in this book. True to Oliveras' style it is mostly closed door but you definitely get a little more passion than some closed door books and she writes excellent kisses. But what I really loved in this particular book were the glimpses into mariachi culture, the importance of foster families and adoption, and the dangers of gentrification. Oliveras didn't shy away from anything.

I of course loved all the Spanish too, but if you don't speak Spanish Oliveras is one of the best Latinx authors at weaving the translations into her text.

Feuding families is not my favorite trope but I still really enjoyed this book. It definitely spends a lot of time setting up back story for Mariana's huge family, but it will be worth it when we get to read Cat's story next.

I got this years ago as an Amazon Kindle First book. I put it off because it wasn't a priority at the time. Books I get for review from publishers take first priority, and then I have such a backlog of books that I want to read on my own that it took a long time to get around to this one. I finally decided to pick it up.

Obviously, West Side Love Story is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. I was worried about this book following too closely to the source material. Certain pieces from the original need to be done, but not all. And Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy after all. I don't so much enjoy reading tragedies. I don't mind a book making me cry, but I want the ending to be filled with hope and not so much death and finality.

I wasn't sure what I was expecting, but I ended up hooked pretty early with West Side Love Story. Mariana and Angelo meet one night randomly but don't learn who each other is at that meeting. They have chemistry and share a moment that neither one of them can easily forget. Angelo first finds out who Mariana is and has to talk her into being friends with him. A shaky friendship turns into an alliance and then into more.

Angelo's parents are both dead and he is the sole guardian of his younger sister who is fourteen years old now. His uncle offered him a place to live and a job when his parents died, and he's been very thankful for that. Only he's never understood his uncle's feud with the Capuleta family. Working for his uncle, he's never seen any illegal or underhanded business dealings that his uncle is rumored to participate in, but Angelo now has a reason not to turn a blind eye to such things.

Mariana is adopted. All of her siblings are. Her parents have taken in many girls who needed a home and a family. And they run a community center that helps many other families and members of their community. Mariana is used to keeping her family together by being the one that most of the others turn to. Her pride in her family and their love for each other was heartwarming. It made them all so easy to root for. Each of the sisters had personalities to jump off the page, especially Cat and Nina (the youngest and newest member of the family, currently just fostering).

The physical scenes are mostly mild. Any actual acts are mostly skipped. I will say there was more description leading up to events or imagining them than what actually happened.

West Side Love Story was better than I expected. Some of the retelling pieces from Romeo and Juliet was a bit "on the nose", but I also appreciated where Priscilla Oliveras decided to detour from the source material. I liked the side characters. Cat was a little bossy and pushy for my taste, but I will say that I'm interested in her story which is book 2. Ultimately, I give West Side Love Story 4 Stars. Have you read West Side Love Story? What did you think? Let me know!

You know, sometimes it's hard when you read predominantly one genre to find something truly unique when it comes to storylines. Romeo and Juliet retelling featuring rival Mariachi bands, which happen to also be feuding families? Sign me up. The drama? I love it.

My only criticism is I feel like we missed out on some stuff. Like there were jumps where I felt like I WANTED to see the rehearsals, I WANTED to see the competition finals etc.

West Side Love Story is Priscilla Oliveras’ latest release and follows the story of star crossed lovers Mariana and Angelo. Both of their families have a long held feud and with a mariachi band rivalry to boot. When they meet as strangers on a night out their star crossed fate is sealed.

This was a fast paced read with lots of family drama and an equal amount of warmth as the Capuleta family really stand for second chances.

Although the setting isn’t quite as vicariously beautiful as the Keys where Priscilla’s first two books are set the story is brought to life by the vibrancy of the mariachi culture. If you’re looking for a steamy summer read then I’d recommend and of Priscilla’s releases so far. The next book, out later this year follows on with Cat one of Mariana’s sisters.
