Power Play: A Why Choose Hockey Romance (The Rainy City Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 151 ratings

A curvaceous chef, rival teammates, and the highest honor in NHL history - What could go wrong?

Dani: After eight years, opening and running a restaurant together, and countless conversations about the future, I was expecting a ring. What I was not expecting was my cheating boyfriend to not only break my heart but also yank my restaurant out from under me. Suddenly single, unemployed, and crashing in my best friend's guest room, I need to overcome my heartbreak and build my life back from the ground up. A private chef gig with a beloved NHL team is a great place to start, but will my chemistry with not one, but two of the Viper's starting lineup be my undoing? It certainly looks that way when HR implements a fraternization policy. Luckily, I'm driven, and I need this job. Not to mention that dating is the last thing on my radar right now, not that any Adonis-like NHL players would even go for a girl like me. Besides, people's true colors are showing all around, from my ex and former friends to my new team, I can't think about dating right now, I need to think about me. Surely for the sake of this new dream job, real friends, and a shot at building a life all my own, I can keep things on the right line of friendship with these two magnetic, complicated, and drop-dead sexy hockey players. Right?

Diego: I've been clawing respect back since I got drafted into to NHL. You would be too if your own family tried to blackmail you into making the most fatal choice a rookie can make. Now it's almost a decade later, I've found my home on the Vipers and my temper has made me a legendary defense player. I could even keep my cool off the ice, as long as I didn't have to spend too much time with my father or his slimeball brother, that was until I met Francois Denault. When he joined the team four years ago, it was hate at first sight. He gets under my skin, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't my personal mission to get under his. Now there's no word on a contract renewal, my captain slot is in jeopardy and this might be my last shot at the Stanley Cup. To make matters worse, the misstep from college is back to haunt me, and I'm tied to my rival. A situation I've made fatal by trying to punch him out and then kissing him. At least there's someone else who makes my heart race as much as the one person I shouldn't want, but she's just out of reach too. Stupid HR.

Francois: It's not easy being hockey's golden boy. Especially when you're the only "out" player on the team. At least the fans love me when I'm scoring. Hell, even my own hometown loves me when I'm not publicly dating a man. I bet they're thrilled I just got dumped, again. I can't blame Cassidy. How many times can you dodge inviting your boyfriend to meet your parents before it comes out that your parents are just trash people? Even after all these years of therapy, I'd rather my exes think I'm the problem than admit that I can't face my own parents. Worse, my parents will probably only remember I exist if I bring home the cup. Maybe it's a good thing I'm going into this season single. Then I can focus on the only thing that matters, winning. If only the team hadn't hired the most beautiful, funny, smart, and alluring chef to travel with us. She's off-limits, for now. Which might be for the best since a fistfight turned makeout session with my arch-rival has me all mixed up in the head. Not to mention he thinks that us kissing impacts our game for the better, and he just might be right. Damn hockey superstitions. If I can just get through this season, maybe it'll all work out.

This was a fun read. I loved how the story developed and the different relationships. I loved how it touched on familial relationships within the LGBTQ+ community. I love that the heroine was a woman of color. There really was a lot going on and it was enjoyable.

This was some of the smexiest MMF writing I have read, I think Mrs. Gilmore was trying to melt my device! I take a little issue with Colson and Charlotte and the roles they played in the drama, my pettiness was not appeased, I personally wanted more consequences for their actions. Also the fact that no one put the paws on Peter upsets my spirit. Outside of that, I enjoyed this so much. I’m a sucker for broken boys so loving François and Diego was a given! Dani is such a real and relatable character who was also easy to love. I’m really looking forward to reading more from this author because that preview at the end was tantalizing.

My Thank you for the fat representation with a FMC is beyond immeasurable. Not many authors exist in this realm of romance. You, Miss Gibson, are a very rare treasure indeed.
The MMF dynamic was beautifully written. All three had relatable issues and getting behind real life solutions to help them deal is refreshing. Love has no boundaries, regardless of preferences. Thank you again and again for sharing such a wonderful story. Happy writing.

There are few tropes as rare as black woman in a Why Choose relationship with men whose swords cross. A curvy woman at that? And it’s not a short, smut-filled, plot-less book?
This author did her big one with this book!
The angst, the romance, friends, enemies- this book had it all and I’m so sad that it’s done. There were a few corny scenes in there but nothing that would take away from the book’s brilliance!
    Recommend this one 1000 times!!

Fabulous mmf RH book. Love the treatment of the plus size FMC and the worship her men give her. The character development and growth they all experience is phenomenal. The ending is surprising but doesn’t feel unfulfilled despite a big question mark being left open. I loved the representation of biculture and the journey to self acceptance. Excellent read. Some minor grammar things but if you can’t overlook that, this reflects more on you than the author. Great job!

I really loved the way this story brought together these three characters. Dani, François and Diego just made sense.

Their individual fears made sense and had very real possibly detrimental consequences to their lives and livelihood.

I appreciated the bi rep and talks of consent as well the desire to be honest always in the relationship. Beautifully done.

What a fantastic and unexpected read! I was hopeful that this wasn't just another hockey book and it was so much more. The characters have so much depth and deminsion, they have flaws and so much passion. Reading it play out thru the book was wonderful seeing the development of their relationships as well as seeing the FMC fight for herself and demanding the right to be loved out loud. It was fantastic! In the end it was always about the wine and never the label and the family you choose to love. A chefs kiss!

B.P Gilmore is an author I found on tiktok, their videos on the book "PowerPlay" had lured me in, hook, line and sinker..so I had to buy a copy.

This will be my second hockey MMF romance and the way the book was marketed it made it seem so cool.

I love the language dictionary at the beginning of the book, as someone who only knows English.. reading the french/Spanish words with definitions really helped me understand further along.

Let me be perfectly honest, I know Jack squat about hockey and sports isn't exactly high on my radar.

But by the time I got 26 pages in, I felt like I could comfortably fit into the audience of a hockey team.

I aboustely loved the firey balance between François and Diego, I was so hooked with everything between them that I had within the first 26 pages.

Having Dani's part managed to play a nice little balancing act between François and Diegos chapters. Also, gave my brain a chance to ease back to happy thoughts rather than "fk that guy" thoughts. 🤦‍♀️

When I got to Deigo explaining about his beauty routine, the first person I thought of was "Rob Lowe in 911 Lone Star" and his need to stay cute. So, for the rest of the story..Diego was instantly pictured as Rob Lowe on a sports time.

    OMG! Chapter 16!

Unfortunately when it got to the triple love interest, something wasn't working for me. I don't really know how to explain it but I don't know..Dani almost felt like she was the uneeded third. There's just something about the three of them together that isn't clicking for me and man, I'm stuck trying to figure out.

The more I read into this story, the more I could see different branches it was trying to grow. The hockey romance, the struggle with parents, the ex-partner, the liar and its purpose to bench a character.. I felt like it got too much at times. I felt like it should've picked maybe one other to use in the hockey romance, I personally felt like the blackmailing storyline was almost too much.

The closer I got to the end of the story, the more it felt like there was a LOT going on. With two different types of blackmail and a lot of "convenient" moments happening.

I'll be honest when I got to the last 15-20%, it had been a bit of a break between reading. Which meant unfortunately the end of the story my mind wasn't fully attaching to the pages I had read only 4 days prior.

Reading the last couple of chapters made me feel a little deattached to the story, probably because of my mini break..but I felt like some of the roads used in the last few chapters could've been explored a little further.

Overall power play has plenty enjoyable moments and it's pretty easy to breeze though..

I might be biased reviewing my wife's work but I also have probably read Power Play more than anyone. This is an incredible book. The character development is amazing. The spice is excellent. The diversity is top notch and the story is compelling and gripping with just enough tension to keep you hooked throughout.

Seeing the love Brittany put into this book while still shining and carrying their full time job and being a loving and caring partner and mother deserves recognition, but the words on those pages and the incredible story they told with their compelling voice and vision absolutely deserves 5 stars.

This little beauty of a polygamous hockey romance was insane.
You have the ennemies to lovers, you have insta lust, you have friends to lovers, you have forbidden relationships it gives you everything in the best way.
This little beauty sends you on a wild ride of building this relationships while individually heally their inner deamons.
    And the spice was exquisite.
I loved every minute of this.
