Waiting for Our Rainbow: A heartbreaking historical WW2 novel, filled with hope Kindle Edition
It should have been a time of romance and excitement for Anne – but it’s 1941 and the war is raging. So instead, she spends her days repairing spitfire wings and reminding herself that the real sacrifice is going on far away from her Cornish village.
When the news breaks that America has entered the war, it brings cautious hope to Anne and her family. And as the Jeeps filled with GIs eventually roll in, it seems their little community is to play a pivotal role in the next stage of the fight.
But the Americans don’t just bring Hollywood glamour and optimism, they also bring something more tantalising – so when Anne meets handsome Joe Mallory, she has to remind herself of exactly why he’s there; that any relationship between them could only end in goodbye.
But is the inevitability of ‘goodbye’ powerful enough to stop what has already begun to blossom?
"A beautifully and cleverly crafted love story set amidst the hopes, heartbreak, fears, challenges and conflict that WW2 laid bare. Loved it so much, I want to read it again!" Author, Jan Brigden.

About the author

Following a career in nursing, a change in profession finally provided Victoria Cornwall the time to write. Her books have subsequently reached the finals of the NEW TALENT AWARD at the Festival of Romantic Fiction, the RNA's JOAN HESSAYON AWARD, the 2021 RNA's Goldsboro Books HISTORICAL ROMANTIC NOVEL AWARD and have twice been nominated for the RONE Best Indie or Small Published Book Award by InD'tale magazine.
Victoria grew up on a farm in Cornwall and can trace her Cornish roots as far back as the 18th century. It is this background and heritage which is the inspiration for her Cornish based novels. She is married, has two grown up children and likes to read and write historical romance with a strong background story, but at its heart is the unmistakable emotion, even pain, of loving someone.
She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a great story of love and war. The journey Anne and Joe took to become one is delightful, honest, and endearing. In all it is creative and well researched. My one issue is, and it is just a small issue that will not keep me from second reading this novel is the language and cultural authenticity. I have read many WW I and WWII fictional action romance novels written by British writers where British and American characters are involved and they all have the same, may I say... flaw. Chapter one for instance where we are introduced to Anne is perfect. However chapter two and all chapters where Joe is involved loses the authenticity. As a American and military veteran myself, I would like to see American spelling, for example “color” for “colour”, “realize” for “realise”, "honor" for "honour"… etc. just to name a few when only Americans are involved, and Americans wouldn’t use the word quaint very often. Also names. Joe and Frank are classic cliche American names. We Americans have other names that are quite fitting, such as Jeff, Greg, Matt, Dave, and even Eugene. Also the term “African-American" wouldn’t have been used back then. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great novel. It just lacks cultural authenticity and as I mentioned, this novel isn’t the only one with this flaw. This story is definitely going into my read again category.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2023Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thoroughly enjoyed this superbly researched and engrossing story set in WW2. Although I knew something about the American GI’s coming to Cornwall much of this story was still a revelation to me and very fascinating. Local girl, Anne meets Joe and their burgeoning romance certainly has a rocky road – I won’t give away the ending let’s just say I thought it was absolutely right for the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Wartime Story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI was immediately caught up in the story of Anne and Joe. Parts of the story reminded me of some of my mother’s tales of her wartime experiences. Gritty and honest at times, this book shows the realities of being an American soldier in Cornwall and the perils and joys of the girls who entered into relationships with them. The poignancy of the story reduced me to tears at several points, which for me is always the sign of a good book. Anne’s brother, Billy also has a lovely role in the story, which enables the reader to get a view of wartime from a child’s point of view. I could also understand Anne’s mother’s worries about her.
I have loved all of Victoria Cornwall’s other books and am happy to add this title to that list.

5.0 out of 5 stars War Time Romance
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWould you give your heart away if you knew it could only end in goodbye?
It should have been a time of romance and excitement for Anne – but it’s 1941 and the war is raging. So instead, she spends her days repairing spitfire wings and reminding herself that the real sacrifice is going on far away from her Cornish village.
When the news breaks that America has entered the war, it brings cautious hope to Anne and her family. And as the Jeeps filled with GIs eventually roll in, it seems their little community is to play a pivotal role in the next stage of the fight.
Anne is determined not to fall a GI, but then she meets the handsome Joe Mallory. As their relationship blossoms, the day of Joe’s departure for the D Day landings loom closer and closer. Will her Cornish Yank survive? Will their love survive?
A beautiful story set in the Cornish countryside that you cannot help but enjoy. A story that involves you in the issues of racism that existed in the US military and how the negro soldiers were treated by their own countrymen. The story delves into parts of WWII history that you do not hear a lot about.
You do just want to keep reading and wishing for Joe to survive the D Day landings and the push into France to beat the Germans. Will Anne & Joe’s love for each other survive and will they live happily ever after? I found myself not able to put the book down - highly recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Joy to Read
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHaving read & enjoyed all 6 books in Victoria Cornwall's The Cornish Tales series, based on the 18th to early 20th century, I was surprised that this latest book is set in WW2. It's 1941 and some American GI's have arrived in a Cornish village. The village is home to Anne and her family and Anne's life takes a new turn when she meets one of the GI's called Joe. I loved reading this book with it's surprise ending and would love it if Victoria wrote a sequel
