Walk: The Path to a More Mindful Life Hardcover – May 15, 2018

4.1 out of 5 stars 44 ratings

"Walking is man's best medicine." - Hippocrates

Walk invites you to explore the benefits that the simple act of walking and spending time in the outdoors can bring to our sense of wellbeing and meaning. Simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight, and become healthier; walking is a great natural way to boost your mind, body, and soul. Traveling by foot is meditative as it fosters a slowness of thought as you become more aware of your surroundings. Learn how to change your speed, embrace the silence, and unearth the joy of walking without going anywhere through the chapters of this book.

Drawing on Sholto's extensive experience working with mindfulness-based practices, this book offers guidance and practical exercises for cultivating present moment awareness and bringing curiosity to the nature of our experience and the world around us.
Walk aims to inspire you to move beyond the pages, step outside, and awaken your senses as you make walking part of your life.

About the Author

Sholto Radford is a mindfulness teacher with a lifelong passion for the outdoors and walking. His background in health, exercise science, and psychology, as well as a personal practice of mindfulness mediation led him, in 2008, to begin working as a researcher at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University. During his time there he also gained extensive experience and training in teaching mindfulness. In 2012 Sholto founded Wilderness Minds, combining his passions and leading courses and retreats with an emphasis on developing present moment awareness and well-being through time spent in the natural world and walking. He is a qualified mountain leader and from a young age has spent much his free time traveling and walking in the mountains of the UK, Europe, and the wider world.

I saw this book in the Presidio in San Francisco. I peeked through it and couldn't stop thinking about. I had to get it.

I walk to clear my head and make sense of things. This book has great small bits to read before you take your walk. I read a section at a time before my walk.

The book is sturdy, and the artwork is beautiful. It would make a great gift for someone into mindfulness.

This book is beautifully written. While I don't see this as another self-help book it will touch upon many aspects of your life. Very well done, no fluff or just going on and on about the subject matter.

For a little book on walking and mindfulness, Walk is a worthy effort that starts out discussing the importance of walking and then shifts focus to breathing and the importance of mindfulness. With reminders for getting the most out of walking, and short, directed exercises for increasing awareness of mindfulness, this small book is a mostly fun experience. My only criticism is that some parts of the mindfulness drag on a little, and I would have liked more of a focus on walking. I love the multi-colored pages and the simple illustrations. I also appreciated that nearly every page was self-contained and rarely carried on to the next page, making it easier to read in spurts. After having read this book, I have incorporated some of its wisdom into my own walking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Off the mat and on with the boots!

This hand book is beautiful in its simplicity both in text and illustration. And yet still contains the important elements of mindfulness based courses framed within a step by step guide using the activity of walking as the primary focus of attention. For more experienced practitioners /teachers this book is both an invitation and an inspiration to use walking as a formal mindfulness practice.
There are now so many books on mindfulness its difficult to choose between them and so, for me, the authors are important.
How can anyone write a book on mindfulness if they do not have a clear understanding and a personal practice?
I do not know the author personally but I do know he is, both, a teacher of mindfulness (Centre for Mindfulness Bangor University) and a practitioner with clear provenience and a passion for walking and nature. He set up Wilderness Minds which offered mindfulness in the wild so that people could meditate on the move. My book shelves are full of mindfulness books and yet still really enjoyed reading this little gem. The authors enthusiasm has inspired me to gain more balance, in my formal mindfulness practice, between sitting inside to moving outside. This book would be a nice gift for walkers who also have a particular interest in mindfulness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely little book

I love this little book - and am enjoying dipping into it. I walk a lot every day with my dog - and I practice mindfulness every day (not sure if my dog does!) - so the two come together in walking. Sholto has written beautifully and directly. The design and graphics are lovely. Bravo - I am so glad I bought it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Small book, first steps
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 24, 2018
This is a short book with the briefest of introductions to a wide number of ideas held within, somehow I expected something that I could read, but in fact it is better to just delve into in small stages. This book might be ideal for the walker wanting to try mindfulness but is less useful for the practitioner of mindfulness who wants to walk.

Very helpful little guide book of mindful walking practices. And nicely illustrated. I truely enjoy the author s approach, combining mindfulness with the outdoors makes total sense to me and now I feel I have the professional guidance and inspiration I needed. Thank you!

1.0 out of 5 stars What's Important To Know?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2024
What's important to know? What's important to know is there are too many pages (almost 50%) in white print on green, light blue and grey paper. I am really struggling to make out some of the words. It is very frustrating. I was hoping to get the book in Kindle but alas, it does not exist. It is a brilliant book totally ruined by the stupidity of making at least half of it printed in white on green, light blue, and grey. What on earth!?! I hope this review is not blocked by the people who make these decisions because this really should be sorted out! Please, please bring out a Kindle version. George Walker
