Walk With Us: How the West Wing Changed Our Lives Kindle Edition
And yet, the show continues to have an impact that is arguably unique. If you live or work in DC, references to it are inescapable. People have walked down the aisle to the theme music. Or they’ve named children, pets, GPS systems, and even an iPhone app after the characters. Or they’ve started Twitter accounts as the characters to continue the storyline and comment on current political events. Or they credit it for closer relationships with their family members or a way out of depression.
In this anthology of quotes and essays, contributors from six countries, ranging in age from twenty to seventy years old, tell their West Wing stories.

About the author

Claire Handscombe moved from Europe to DC in 2012, ostensibly to study for an MFA in Creative Writing, but actually – let’s be honest – because of an obsession with The West Wing.
She is the author of Unscripted, a novel about a young woman with a celebrity crush and a determined plan, and the editor of Walk With Us: How The West Wing Changed Our Lives.
Claire also hosts the Brit Lit Podcast, a fortnightly show of news and views from British books and publishing. She can be found tweeting at @bookishclaire.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2024Walk With Us: How "The West Wing" Changed Our Lives, by Claire Handscombe, is a quick read for devotees of the show. I'm one of them. I watch the entire series every four years before the upcoming Presidential election. I'm inspired by Sorkin's writing, the complexities of the characters, and the utter faith in our democracy, despite its flaws. I don't think the show changed my life although it often makes me happier about my country. This is a quick read that may inspire you to take a break from cable news and ups and downs of polling.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2020It seems an inarguable fact that, if something gets onto television, it will have a fanbase. No matter how long or short it runs for, it will inspire a following. The West Wing, Aaron's Sorkin's series about the staff of the fictional Bartlet administration, was to prove no exception. Except The West Wing has done more than that. What it's done, and why that might be, is what inspired editor Claire Handscombe and a group of writers back in 2016 for this collection.
Let this reviewer be upfront: If you're looking for a guide to the show, or some deep-dive critical analysis of it, you've come to the wrong place. There's a place for both out there (in fact, some guides were published during the original run, though none covered the entire seven seasons, something that someone should remedy), but this is not it. Don't let that discourage you from reading it, though, because this has plenty to offer.
Handscombe and her writers offer up something more personal than simple recountings of episode details and analysis. Instead, these are tales of how a successful TV influenced their lives. Often starting from how they discovered the show or how they came to it at a particular moment in their lives, between the covers are stories of people who changed career paths, bonded with family and friends, met their spouse, or found inspiration and hope from its episodes. People who learned that decisions are made by those who show up or became active in their communities more than they had, and entered the realms of law and government inspired by the series and characters like Press Secretary CJ Cregg or speechwriter Sam Seaborn. These are stories of ordinary people whose lives became a little less so because they came into contact with the series and how they made the most of it.
There's more than that, with some powerful pieces as well, tales of the less ordinary kind. There's the emotional tale of someone who worked their way through grief and PTSD thanks to a character's experiences on-screen with it, which had this reader tearing up. There's the testimony of those diagnosed with the same affliction as Martin Sheen's President, relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, who found strength from the series. For them, The West Wing is more than just a TV show but comfort viewing and even a life-preserver of sorts.
The West Wing has been coming back into vogue in recent years, as the recent reunion or HBO Max can help attest. This book came perhaps a little before that wave started to break, but it remains a sampling of just a handful of lives that the series has touched. For fans of The West Wing wanting to revel in the experience of their fellow fans, or wanting to hear something different about a favorite show, come along and Walk With Us.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2016I enjoyed this book very much. The insightful stories were interesting glimpses into fellow Wingnuts lives. I suppose I forget that other countries watch American television so that was interesting to get their take. I would recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good writing but a bit light overall
Could have had a few more contributors before publication. Some of the longer form articles were comfortably the best of the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Memory making
Came across this book whilst looking for something else and so glad I did. Whilst only short and a tad random I'd recommend it purely as a reminder of how great the West Wing was. Sadly I'm not clever enough to say how it changed my life, only that it did and watching re-runs on t.v. still manages to bring out the goose bumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
An enjoyable read of a collection of short essays from those whose lives have been affected or impacted by their love of the West Wing-my only complaint is it could have been longer!

3.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced
I have given this book only 3 stars because it was a little low on content. I enjoyed what there was but it needs a lot more.
