House of Leofric series. A deliciously intriguing medieval story with passionate romance and engaging characters." - Goodreads

"
Under the Warrior’s Protection is the first book I read by Ella Matthews. It won’t be the last! I was captivated by the characters from the opening pages. They are well-developed and seem believable in their roles. Their exasperation with each other, the sarcasm, and eventually their love are perfectly written. Other characters in this book play their roles well, adding mystery, details, and plot twists to make the book a “read all night” winner." - Goodreads

Will they figure out in time what counts most ...

Like the previous book in this series, it is an enemies to lovers tale, well from the heroine’s side .
Katherine having eavesdropped Jarin’s talk with his friend, knows where he stands about she and her family. Having felt the burden of her father’s treason for a long time now, she knows she is no treasure, nor beauty.
But it still stings to hear it out.
Jarin made a mistake, he spoke without having any clue of whom he was talking about. And while unaware of his words having been heard, he fells under Katherine’s invisible charms, no one sees her as he looks at her. To him, she is not the plain sister like everyone describes her. Because no one took once the time to watch her closely, to see past her shabby appearance, because her face and lite body is only a part of her allure, she is kind and courageous and definitely stubborn and impudent, and her gaze tells so much, she talks to his soul.
And while they began on the wrong foot, along their odyssey they learn to trust one another, each revealing their secret scars.
But both are blinded by their own past issues, so much they themselves impede their own course to the other. Longing for the other’s arms but unable to make the journey toward them.

At time I was upset at them for keeping their sentiments secret, for holding them back, but it is another time, a time when feelings were for courteous love and poets.
Luckily for them, others are less chivalrous and will meddle a bit to help them sort out their feelings.

Good story. Katherine and Jason were very different, even though the brutality of their childhood was horribly similar. My heart wrenched for both of them, especially Katherine. The story grew on me even with all the lust-at-first-sight. I love the epilogue. Quite a bit of setup for next in the series. Lost a star for steaminess.

In Medieval England, Jarin Ashdown could end up married to the wrong sister.

Under The Warrior’s Protection by Ella Matthews is book 2 in the House of Leofric series but can be read as a standalone.

A delightful medieval historical romance in which the warrior falls for the not-so-pretty, shy, older sister of the woman he is supposed to marry.

Katherine Leofric and her sister Linota lived with their abusive mother in the keep of the Earl of Ogmore. They were kept locked in their chambers, and their mother beat them, especially Katherine, for any small misdeed.

Their father was executed for treason, and her family name was in shambles. Her brother Braedan was marrying the Earl of Ogmore’s only daughter, and they would finally move from under their mother to live with him.

Jarin Ashdown, Earl of Borwyn, inherited more land than funds and considered marrying Ogmore’s daughter to re-establish his finances. When she married Katherine’s brother, the Earl offered Jarin to marry one of the Leofric sisters for a good dowry. He was in great need but reluctant to align his family name with the disgraced Leofrics.

Jarin was tasked to escort the Leofric sisters to their brother’s new home. When the beautiful Linota is kidnapped, he and plain Katherine go to her rescue together.

The story is sweet and romantic, a little spiced towards the end. Katherine is a free spirit, and Jarin is enchanted by her inner strength.

Jarin reminds me a bit of Mr. Darcy. He did not hide his reservations against her family, and I loved to see him eating his humble pie and working on making amends.

I love a slow-burn romance, especially when the couple bonds over much more than looks.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

Ella Matthews’ Under the Warrior’s Protection is an atmospheric, dramatic and passionate Medieval romance that effortlessly brings the past to life.

With her father having been arrested for treason and her mother’s mental issues a subject of great disdain and derision all around court, Katherine Leofric is well aware of the fact that her family’s name is mud. Katherine and her pretty younger sister barely leave their rooms and know that the future is bleak and uncertain. With the likelihood of making a good match becoming increasingly difficult with each passing day, Katherine hopes that her sister will not share a similar fate and that she will marry a good man and have the future that will surely be denied to her. All Katherine wants is to be able to see her sister marry and to be a doting and caring aunt to any nephews and nieces that she might have. Romance doesn’t seem to be on the cards for Katherine, but fate – in the shape of a hardened and handsome warrior – might have other ideas…

Jarin, Earl of Borwyn, is all too aware that he needs to marry again. With his last marriage having had an unfortunate and acrimonious end, Jarin is looking to make a match that will be advantageous and beneficial to him and his estates. Having long given up on love, Jarin certainly has never had any problems attracting female attention, but his heart is firmly off limits. As he contemplates getting married again, Jarin finds himself flabbergasted when he finds himself unable to stop thinking about Katherine Leofric, the daughter of a traitor who many think is as crazy and unstable as her mother. Yet, Katherine does not seem to want to have anything to with him – until her beloved sister is abducted and Jarin offers her his protection.

With fate having thrown them together in the most surprising and unexpected of ways, Katherine and Jarin find themselves spending more and more time together and they quickly begin to see one another in a completely different light. Although Katherine cannot deny the fact that she finds herself drawn to Jarin, she is perfectly aware that her feelings for him will never be reciprocated and that he is only interested in her dowry. But when temptation proves impossible to resist, Katherine and Jarin surrender to the desire that sizzles between them.

Having lost her heart to her valiant warrior, will happiness ever be within Katherine’s reach? Or is she destined to spend the rest of her life in the shadows denied of a blissful future with the only man she will ever love: Jarin…

Ella Matthews’ Under the Warrior’s Protection is a seductive tale of danger and desire that draws readers in from the very beginning with a beguiling blend of nail-biting adventure, intense emotional drama and heart-pounding romance sprinkled with a soupcon of humour.

Katherine was a terrific heroine who was strong, intelligent, resilient and brave and Jarin is an irresistible warrior who is charismatic, handsome, powerful and someone it is impossible not to fall head over heels in love with.

Historical romance readers who are yet to discover Ella Matthews’ exciting and emotional Medieval tales are missing out on a treat and her second novel, Under the Warrior’s Protection, is another terrific page-turner by this talented new writer.

I loved this second story in the series about the House of Leofric even more than the first. A very engaging story and wonderful chemistry between the two main characters. I especially enjoyed the way that everything was tied up at the end :)
