Can I sign up to be an investigator? I really enjoyed these stories of strange happenings, and hope there will be more.

This is a collection of short stories and I love short stories. The stories all move along at a nice pace making them easy to read. However the author writes unlike most other authors these days. He is able to write with an economy of words shared by few others. This writer has a seemingly fearless approach to his stories that I find inspiring. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path you won’t do better than a Vaughn Ashby story.

My English teacher would be appalled at the errors in spelling, word usage I.e. mixing up homonyms, and general grammar rules. The editing must have been done by a sixth grader. On the plus side, the stories we not bad. IMO, they weren’t well rounded, especially in character development, but reasonably well thought out. I got this book for free, so I cannot complain.

If you want to sell books, don't get people interested, then pull the oops it's a sample. The short stories were okay, but the author needs to be more honest with his sales pitch.

These stories are amazing, reminds me of King's "night shift" collection. Some of these stories are downright creepy, but it a fun way to spend time. The horror is perhaps a bit closer to Clive Barker's style.

I've read 2 books by this author and I can't wait to read more!

Buy it! Read it! Enjoy!

Thanks!

I am on this author's mailing list and got this book for free. The author seems like a good guy and a genuine fan of genre fiction. I would have prefered to be leaving a good review.

I see where the author wanted to go with this. He fails to get there. HHe wanted to create a humorous Twilight Zone crossed with an underground investigatory group a la the SCP foundation. The humor falls flat, the mysteries aren't mysterious and the Aurora Wasteland is just developed enough to seem poorly conceived.

At no point does the author deign to attempt story-telling. This is straight up exposition with conversational style asides. They read more like detailed synopsis' of the stories he wanted to tell, like he published his notes.

The humor is in the conversational asides. Its derivative, but really falls flat due to pacing and delivery.

The tone he wanted to create with the stories and the humor also don't match. However, since he fails to achieve either, this is only a hypothetical negative instead of actually detracting from the book.

Not worth reading, even free.

On the positive side, the author has a upbeat tone in a lot of the book that is reminiscent of old school horror hosts, but with a modern twist. If he improves his craft, his books could be a lot of fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing read!

I must say I was looking for something weird with that touch of scary that really makes you kind of shiver...you know in a good way that has your heart pumping because the adrenaline started going because you were anxious of what would happen next. Well, Ashby most definitely piqued my interest in this book because these stories really make you think and have you utterly anxious because some of the stories were just indescribable yet totally enthralling...it was quite a unique experience. I am completely intrigued to read the next ones.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good intro to the Aurora Wasteland
Reviewed in Australia on January 6, 2021
This was a great introduction to the Aurora Wasteland, a website where weird and wonderful - well, maybe not "wonderful" - things happen. This is the first book I have read by Vaughan Ashby, and if the book didn't have preview chapters of his other books at the end, I might not have read any more. Why? Editing, man, editing! Spelling and grammatical errors drive me mad. But, the stories are good, and the previews make me want to get to the other books. In fact, I'm going to start on Tethered now.
