When We Were Friends: An emotional and uplifting novel from Samantha Tonge Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,880 ratings

Discover the gorgeous, emotional book club pick from the top 50 bestselling author of A Single Act of Kindness, Samantha Tonge.

Four friends, one big secret... and the journey of a lifetime.

It’s nineteen years since they stopped speaking to each other, but now Morgan needs to contact her three best friends from school: Paige, Emily and Tiff.

Her teenage son wants to meet his dad and Morgan can’t ignore his requests any longer. And Paige, Emily and Tiff all knew what actually happened back then. Even if that was what led to their friendship group falling apart, they’re the only people Morgan can think of who might be able help her find the man who disappeared without a trace before she could tell him she was pregnant.

Can Morgan persuade her old friends to go on a road trip to track him down? As adults – with marriages, children and a whole bucket-load of their own problems – will they be able to work together to solve the mystery? And if so – just when forgiveness for the past looks like it might be possible – how will they cope with the biggest shock of all?

A story about love, families and how the people who know you best are the ones you will always need in your life. Totally heartbreaking, brilliant, uplifting fiction for fans of Jill Mansell, Paige Toon and Sheila O’Flanagan.

That Twist, Though

That Twist, Though
Thank you to my partners, Rachel’s Random Resources and Boldwood Books and the author. I appreciate the gifted eARC, and I am leaving this review voluntarily! 1. 𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 - Can friendship survive from high school into adulthood? It definitely cannot when their world is blown up by the one boy that secretly connected them. 2. 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 - We get a glimpse into the perils of adult relationships - romantic, friendly, and familial. There are always hardships along the way, and our characters have to figure out how to mend them. 3. 𝑴𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 - Thank goodness we tend to gain a great deal of maturity as we age. However, with our group of friends, it is apparent that it is easy to slip back into the grasp of immaturity when so many memories are linked to those times. 4. 𝑯𝒐𝒍𝒚 𝑺𝒎𝒐𝒌𝒆𝒔…𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰𝒏 𝑻𝒉𝒆… - I mean let’s talk about a twist! Whoa 🤯 This one caught me so off-guard! It’s one of those twists that leave you picking your jaw up off the ground. 👏🏼 👏🏼 5. 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒔 - As with many stories, secrets are endless in this one. And once again, so much pain could have been avoided had there been honesty. (And again, then we wouldn’t have a great story to read!)

Four girls, a quartet of best friends, fall out in high school and attempt to reunite almost 20 years later. Well developed characters with a fair amount of baggage. Life is messy and this book illustrates it.

High school friends that were tight
during teen years, but one nasty boy was able to ruin their trust in each other. The reunion is the main part of the story.

Enjoyed this book to the very end. Hard to put down. Took me back to my youth and the mistakes I made and what they taught me as adult. Reminded me that we have to forgive our younger selves as well as others.

Took me a bit to get into it, but once I did the story kept drawing me in. Life happens; and this group of friends, with all its turns, could have been any of us.

Humans are complicated.life is complicated. It takes a very talented person to take these statements and create a page Turner. Samantha has done just that. I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars UNPUTDOWNABLE AS USUAL
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 29, 2024
And Samantha Tonge does it again. I found this story of four estranged best friends meeting up, reluctantly at first, but curious to know why they had been contacted, completely unputdownable. It has a brilliant plot, four very different characters depicting the four friends, all of whom I found intriguing and a mystery to boot. This extremely talented author as usual weaved many layers into her writing each one fascinating to uncover. Over the time I have been reading her books I've found this author go from strength to strength in every way. I look forward eagerly to Samantha Tonge's next offering as I know I shall be in for a treat!

Reading this book i couldn't put down and understanding all the characters.
The disappointing bit is the end as it just leaves you hanging and does not say about another book coming out. Sorry but so disappointed.
