Sometimes the monsters are real…

For Tor and Skald this is their first Viking raid, and their minds are filled with thoughts of honor and glory. What awaits them are beasts - huge, hairy and fanged, the Alma, who will not suffer intruders in their domain. When the Vikings slaughter a female Alma they soon find themselves in the middle of a battle with vicious creatures bent on bloody revenge. Now they must stand and be counted, for destiny awaits in the mountains, where the hairy ones dance.

From the Author

Vikings vs Yeti. What more do you need to know? Actually they're ALMA. Same beasts, different name.

Big beasties fascinate me.

Some of that fascination stems from early film viewing. I remember being taken to the cinema to see The Blob. I couldn't have been more than seven or eight, and it scared me badly. The original incarnation of Kong has been with me since around the same time.

Similarly, I remember the BBC showing re-runs of classic creature features late on Friday nights, and THEM! in particular left a mark on my psyche.

I've also got a Biological Sciences degree, and even while watching said movies, I'm usually trying to figure out how the creature would actually work in nature - what would it eat? How would it procreate? What effect would it have on the environment around it?

On top of that, I have an interest in cryptozoology, of creatures that live just out of sight of humankind, and of the myriad possibilities that nature, and man's dabbling with it, can throw up.

Back at the movies again, another early influence was the Kirk Douglas / Tony Curtis movie THE VIKINGS. There's that, and when I was very young I would be taken ten miles over the hill to the shore at Largs on the Ayrshire coast. There's a memorial there to The Battle of Largs where Scots fought off Vikings. The story was told to me so often it sunk into my soul, and as kids we spent many a day in pretend swordfights as Vikings (when it wasn't Zorro - but that's another story

All those things were going round in my head when I first sat down to write BERSERKER. And there might be some of THE THIRTEENTH WARRIOR in there too.

It is tough to express in words how much fun I had reading Berserker by William Meikle (@williemeikle). The story is highly original, the characters compelling, the writing fresh and loaded with great imagery. Action? Plenty of it, and an ending that I didn't see coming.

Before going too much farther, a word about the premise. Don't be fooled into thinking this story -- which the author himself labelled as "Vikings vs. Yeti" in his Twitter feed -- is some eBook version of a sub-B movie found on the SyFy Channel. Yes, that is essentially what the story boils down to, but Berserker is so much more than some cheesy "man in a rubber suit" movie. The main characters, Tor and his childhood friend Orjan, have flesh on their bones and it takes the reader almost no time at all to become fully invested in what happens to them.

Tor and Orjan, who became a "Skald" -- a sort of court jester/psychic -- after a crippling childhood accident, are on their first "Viking," or sailing journey, looking for loot. As part of being "Skald" Orjan descends into a state known as the "wyrd" in which future and past events are re-lived, and as the story opens Orjan senses their future holds one outcome: Doom. Fighting through a dense ice and sleet storm, the three Viking longboats make landfall and then come to anchor at a recently-abandoned settlement at the head of a fjord. But the small group of huts has not been completely vacated as the Viking band discovers and surrounds a large beast with white fur and hands tipped with razor-sharp nails.

Being Vikings after all, they kill the creature, which turns out to be a female carrying three unborn children, and that sets into motion a battle to death between the Vikings and the band of Yeti, or Alma as they are known. Although the Alma are larger and stronger than the Vikings, the Norsemen won't go to Valhalla without a fight and the battle scenes are bloody and violent affairs. More is going on than a battle of survival, however, and Viking mythology comes into the story in a completely natural and organic fashion. I won't give away any more, but Orjan's special abilities as a Skald will be needed for Tor and the other Vikings to survive the onslaught.

Berserker had me up late several nights in a row, reading just one more chapter to find out what happened next. As an added bonus, Mr. Meikle has included two of his short stories at the end, and I found them to be just as much fun. I highly recommend Berserker to anyone looking for a fast, fun and exciting horror story that is as well-written as it is original. I'll be adding Mr. Meikle's other stories about "beasties" to my to-read list.

I felt this book alluded to several possibilities. On one hand it started off as if the events that were taking place would one day become the stuff of legends - as if some of the stories of Thor and Odin and the Frost Giants were derived from them. But then it began to feel like the characters were actually re-enacting mythological events. It was not til towards the end I got a feeling for what was happening. Yes, I think I enjoyed the tale and the web woven by the author. I know that once I finished reading it I was interested enough in the subject matter to look up the various elements of Scandanavian mythology to see where he got his ideas from and how much he followed these myths. It's always a good sign when a book can motivate the reader like this.

At a more technical level, the wordsmithing was above average for a kindle book, but could have been better. I say this because I imagine that era to be a time of great poetry, and Norse sagas are legendary (pun intended). But at no point did the words captivate me and draw me in to the tale. My enjoyment was purely down to the likeable protagonist and the relentless main plot. Meanwhile the dumb bully sub-plot was fairly banal, a counter-balance to the intriguing main plot, and probably could have been handled more artfully.

My four stars is based on enjoyment value rather than literary merit. Yes, I enjoyed the book - but it is not a work of literature. That aside, I recommend it.

I've run hot and cold on William Meikle's novels. Some I've truly enjoyed; others just didn't do it for me. But in Berserker Meikle is hitting his stride - and that stride is a full-out gallop!

There is no shortage of action (and a surprising amount of gore) in Berserker. It starts with Vikings landing near a deserted village and finding a lone alma, the local name for a beast that is apparently a yeti. Men being men and Vikings being the manliest of men, they kill the creature. When they notice the creature is pregnant they cut her open and kill the unborn yetis. Then all hell breaks loose as papa yeti and a few of his friends exact revenge on the Norsemen.

At the center of the story is Tor, a young warrior on his first raiding trip, and his friend, Orjan, the Skald (a sort of shaman and reciter of sagas for the Vikings). After finding the people who left the village, Orjan discovers a bit of history behind the villagers and the yeti. He's aided by his trips into the "wyrd" where his visions reveal more information. As the Vikings battle for their lives, Orjan the Skald is abducted by the yeti and it's up to Tor to follow and try to free his friend.

With a mixture of Viking mythology and escalating mayhem between the Vikings and yeti, this is a face-paced tale that propels the reader swiftly toward a surprising climax. A well-done story for those who like their action blood-drenched and non-stop.

Well I came into this Novel with eyes wide open, although I dont normally like this sort of book I was drawn to teh title and as I have a love for all things Viking I thought I would give it a go. Man was I glad I did I loved this from the first page to the last. The infighting and loyalty issues to the villagers hiding and trusting the chosen one was just amazing. the descriptions of the creatures was awsome and the fight sequenses I saw played out in my head as I read. All around I loved this as a fast paced novel for all to enjoy so get on to it. Great read. The book was well structured and written like a pro that I now know he is.

The book wasn't bad; it was okay.
I kept wanting it to give me more about the actual vikings (not trying to give a spoiler) and not so much on the antagonist, the wyrd and the visions that took place there.
William has potential, but I don't feel that he met it fully on this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, furious, fantastic.

I've read a lot Mr Meikle's stories, and am never disappointed.
I generally know what's coming: a fast paced, well plotted story, with an eye for the sharp detail to deliver the blast of Horror that's usually lurking (but sometimes it's plain old Mystery or Magic).

Berserker took my enjoyment to a new level - I mean, Vikings vs Yetis - how awesome is that. I could imagine a concept Metal album doing justice to this story - such is the epic ferocity of the implacable foes.

After an adventurous start, our Vikings find themselves under siege from vicious Yeti with a score to settle. The body count is impressive on both sides - but what sets this apart from what might have been fairly standard fiction (albeit with a touch of myth) is the interplay of characters: proud Captain Per and his cowardly son Kai, Tor the hero who sticks to the Viking way to see him through, and the Skald, crippled but imbued with the gift of the Wyrd, who must harness his power to save his people and help the mysterious villagers whose lives they so carelessly interrupt.

I shan't reveal all that goes on: all the excellent battle scenes, the finely wrought details of the sailing and fighting gear of the Viking, the traditions of both sides, or the telling moments that have you cheering or gasping (depends whose side you're on really!). Just get the book - you'll love it.

Very enjoyable story that was straight into the action from page 1.
It reminded me of the characters from the film, The 13th Warrior, as they fought like brothers to the death as eternal life awaited in Valhalla.
The fight scenes with the Alma (Yeti) were enthralling and very graphic.
Another good book from Mr Meikle.
