Although this is a simple children’s book, it could not convey the message of saying no to preserve yourself any better. My generation came up on the Rainbow Fish - which if you’re not familiar, is a book about giving parts of yourself away to please others - but this book beautifully illustrates setting boundaries. Honey Cat gives her honey freely until she realizes it is no longer serving her and gently, yet firmly tells her friends “no”. My five-year-old and I had a great conversation about the message of this book and I love that it was so simple for her to understand. The illustrations are also gorgeous.

I am conflicted. I went back-and-forth giving the story one star and five stars. I love the images, (so cute, I wanted to squeeze honey cat myself) but the content was complicated. Also the super descriptive naming was very odd for a child to read. The message of saying “no” may not be good for the age of the child reading this. I don’t think a child at age 3, 4 or 5 is being asked to do anything other than clean up by their parents or do some schoolwork, so the message needed explaining when I read it to my young one. BUT, I loved the story (see, I am conflicted). Buy it, and see for yourself. :)

This book was so enjoyable. As an adult I feel so similar to honey cat. Sometimes we give, give, give, and never receive. It is physically exhausting. So I could relate to this story.

I also enjoyed the pictures they were beautiful. I recommend getting a physical copy because the illustrations just pop. I loved this little book.

When Honey Cat Said No: A Children's Picture Book About Friendship, Self-Care, and Learning When to Say No (Ages 3-6) by Robin Summers is a delightful children's book that combines vibrant illustrations with an important message about setting boundaries and valuing self-care. The story is engaging and relatable for young readers, making it a great teaching tool for parents. While the pacing felt a bit slow at times, the overall message shines through beautifully.
