When Nothing Else Matters: Friends to Lovers Sports Romance (Heartstrings Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,148 ratings

Dylan Mathers is a complication I don’t need in my life.

Star of the football team, popular man on campus, hot as hell…and he’s my best friend. Or at least, that's what we're telling everyone.

As hard as I try, I can't deny the connection we have. I’m desperate to discover all his thoughts and secrets and even want to tell him mine. Mostly. If it didn’t mean risking everything I’ve tried hard to protect. After avoiding relationships for years, I’m suddenly finding it hard to remember why.

I thought I knew our truth. I thought my heart was safe. I was wrong. There’s so much more to our story. And it turns out, I’m not the only one with demons. We should have known better…

The past always catches up to you.

Authors note: When Nothing Else Matters is a dual POV emotional new adult, friends to lovers, college romance filled with humor and heat. This standalone contains football hotties, adult language, and a simple lie that sets a wild story in motion. Please note that characters discuss the loss of a parent and physical abuse, however both occur off the page.

🏈Review Time🏈 When Nothing Else Matters by @katherinejayauthor I was so incredibly impressed at the journey this book took me on. I can absolutely say that both books so far in the Heartstrings series are beyond🙌🏻🙌🏻 The series is a debut from @katherinejayauthor and it makes these books even more amazing! I just loved these characters and their story so much🫶🏻 Summer is a beautiful girl who doesn’t feel nor know her worth. She uses men to fill an emotional void and doesn’t allow herself to get in too deep or catch feelings. Past trauma and family turmoil has caused her to lose herself internally while on the outside showing a confident facade to the world. Dylan is a confident, serial relationship whore who is a stud on the football field. He doesn’t do one night stands, but he does relationships and is never single. Due to his past, as well as, hopes and dreams for the future he puts himself in positions with women that cause him to get scared and run at the “I love you” stage and hop to a new girl. Dylan and Summer are two broken people that carry guilt, shame, and issues that allow neither of them to discover all that love has to offer. They meet and both have an instant attraction but don’t allow each other to act on it. Summer doesn’t want to “one night stand” Dylan and Dylan has a girlfriend. They decide that they will be “best friends” and that is what they become. We see walls start to come down, the friendship start to deepen and love start to form (however neither would admit). This was such a beautiful story of these two people finding their person and realizing that they are worthy of a forever type of epic love. I don’t want to give too many details because the journey is what made the book for me. I fell in love with Dylan (we are talking Noah Riley swoon material) and Summer is a badass whose strength is admired. There is just something about these College Romances that are so special and the relationships impact me so deeply. This is a very special book and very special couple. Also let me tell you….Dylan is the King of utilizing a wall…IYKYK🫶🏻 ✰✰✰✰✰

Looking for a swoony slow burn fake best friends to lovers book?

When Nothing Else Matters by Katherine Jay is exactly that.

Dylan loves relationships. He knows where he stands with them. No angst, no back and forth. He is just a relationship guy.

Summer is the complete opposite. Flitters from one guy to another enjoying life and isn’t interested in settling down but it super guarded due to her damaged childhood history.

When they ‘first’ meet, with a little white lie, they end up being fake best friends. Dylan is drawn to Summer and finds her familiar but nothing rings a bell. The ‘fake’ memories that they produce is super sweet and filled with underlying tension when it borders on moving into steamy territory. Lots of back and forth between each other.

“𝐇𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐞.”

It’s a long book and it takes you on Dylan and Summer’s journey to coming full circle at the end. There are some heart wrenching scenes where Summer’s past is addressed and it’s makes you feel all the things.

    “𝐈’𝐦 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧’𝐭 𝐈?”

The story started out with a great promise but dragged towards the middle. The back and forth of Dylan chasing Summer lost its shine. There were some hot moments that kept me reading but by the time they got together I was losing interest. Summer’s history with her family also remained somewhat vague. Even with the climax at the confrontation the detail given weakened the story even more. The reason for being disowned from her family at sixteen was just plain stupid. There was a lot that could have been done with parts of the conflict that made sense like her mom’s part of the whole situation. I loved the banter between Dylan & Summer throughout the book. I did get lost with setting up all the characters that are coming up in the series. I think at some point Logan’s counterpart was mentioned but never given a name; just a friend of Lucy.

this was absolutely a five star read. mind you this is katherine’s debut novel. a whole queen! when i say that dylan and summer have my whole heart, i mean it. this was a whole new kind of “fake relationship” and it was so much fun to read. and the way it all came together in the end was beautiful.
summer has really been through it, she doesn’t talk to her family and she doesn’t let her self get attached to a man ever. she’s got a huge aversion to commitment….enter dylan. the star receiver on the football team. they are instantly attracted to each other but instead end up in a fake childhood best friend scenario. them coming up with random fake memories had me laughing out loud. they have this natural draw to one another and i was eating it up. i swear i loved every minute of it.
dylan f-ing mathers was so swoony and perfect. i love that man he’s protective, witty, smart, patient, literally perfection and he’s hot so… as a serial monogamist he was down bad for summer immediately. he really tried convincing everyone he only liked her as a friend…as if! the banter between them was so funny. it was hard watching them both fight their connection. she was scared and he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. but they are literally meant to be together. they honestly both broke my heart, when you learn about their pasts and why they are the way they are you just want to hug them both.
this is a dual pov (obsessed), friends to lovers, new adult college sports romance with a touch of spice and angst….so everything i love. i highly recommend. this is on KU as well for my kindle girlies! i adore katherine’s writing style. her characters literally attach themselves to your heart instantly. i cannot wait for joel and delilah’s story!

Ooh, I’ve swooned, what an emotional ride. The characters are super fun and hot to be around, their personality shapes the story. From a terrible past to broken souls, Dylan and Summer question themselves on different aspects and scenarios. They are like two sides of one coin, so much alike yet apart. I enjoyed the book in every line, the friendship is adorable. Dylan and Summer’s banter and make-up stories are to die laughing. It’s written so well and amazingly that it kept me hooked the entire time.

This book gave me all the feels. I was hooked really quickly, Summer and Dylan were incredibe and I didn't want the book to end.

    💖 Summer & Dylan 💖
The serial dater meets the "only casual hock ups" girl. They pretend to be best friends and come up with hilarious childhood memories. Their chemistry is off the charts and they both throw each other off balance. It awesome to watch especially with Dylan. The story never gets boring, there are so many great, funny and intense scenes in this book.
Their HEA is not an easy one and they both have baggage and experienced trauma. The story is deep and emotional, beautiful and heartbreaking.

I totally recommend for everyone to read this book. Katherine Jay is an indie author from Australia and "when nothing else matters" is just the start of the series. Yes, there is more to come

First of all, I can't believe that this is Katherine Jay's debut novel. Amazing!!
I devoured this book. It's the first in the Heartstrings series and it follows Dylan and Summer, who form a fake friendship that leads them on a roller coaster of all kinds of emotions. This is so much more than a romance novel. It deals with some sensitive topics and will have you falling in love with all the characters. The slow burn, angst, steam, and banter that this book delivers are superb. I adored Summer for her strength and was swooning over Dylan the entire time. Major boyfriend crush!! You get introduced to their friends, which will have their own books - loved each one of them and can't wait to get to know them better. looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This book was intense! I'm not sure there is any other way to describe it. But it hooked me immediately and I couldn't stop reading.

The connection between Summer and Dylan is strong, and you can't help but FEEL they are meant to be together. Dylan loves her so well, and so patiently.

The angst was high in this book. Almost a little too much? The last 10% of the book I was kind of over it and ready for a few pages of happiness!

I really liked this book and will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Is it a horrible thing to say that I enjoyed Dylan and Summer’s story more than Ain’t no sunshine? (If it is, I apologise now to Katherine 🥺)

The book starts with a 12-year old Dylan having a football training, and a little girl who’s dragged away from it by her father. He tries to save her but he is too late

I don’t think I’m going to spoil anything by saying that we find out that the little girl was indeed Summer. I’m not going to say more though as that will definitely be a spoiler.

Summer doesn’t open up to anyone or have a proper relationship. She thinks she doesn’t deserve any of that, let alone being loved by someone.

Dylan is quite the opposite. He is a relationship guy, although he’s never been in love.

The physical and emotional connection between them is so obvious but it’s still not enough for Summer to let her guard down.So they end up with a back and forth/push and pull game.

It takes a while for her to realise she doesn’t need to protect her heart around Dylan

There is definitely a twist in the book which I absolutely loved. I was not expecting that at all! We find out more about Summer and Dylan’s families and past.

Make sure you sign up for Katherine’s newsletter to get the cute bonus epilogue

Can’t wait to read Joel and Delilah’s story. Still here with you is coming in the fall.

( I would also love it if Logan would get his own book 🙈 )
