The Mage's Game (Wild Magic Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 627 ratings

The love between an alpha and a mage is not easily forgotten. Even if one is a headstrong wolf and the other an untrustworthy sorcerer.

Five years after he walked out of Declan’s life, Jasper returns to Samhain Pack begging for help. Declan doesn’t believe a word of the tale his ex is spinning. He wants Jasper gone from the pack before he brings trouble down on them. His head is telling him Jasper can’t be trusted, but his heart has never quite let go of his love for the mage. Is he willing to risk everything for Jasper?

For five long years, Jasper has destroyed pack after pack at his family’s behest. He bonds with an alpha, blinds them to the truth, and strikes at the heart of their pack. But Samhain isn’t just any pack, and Declan is more than just an alpha. He is Jasper’s first—and only—love. Torn between loyalty to his family and following his heart, who is he going to choose?

The Mage’s Game is a m/m paranormal romance featuring a stubborn hunter, a world-weary sorcerer, and a pack that’s finally getting back on its feet. It’s the third book in the Wild Magic series, which should be read in order. It contains mature and somewhat dark themes but is not an mpreg story.

Claire Cullen is an author and aspiring baker. Since she was a toddler, she has loved making up stories. Getting them down on paper proved a challenge in the early years when her preferred medium was finger puppets. She moved on to pen and paper, and later to keyboards, and hasn't looked back since, except for occasional bouts of nostalgia.

Claire loves to write strong, Alpha males with protective streaks a mile wide and counterpoint them with love interests with the inner strength to survive the trials life has thrown at them.

Most of all, Claire loves a happy ever after (but she'll be content with a happy for now).

This is a paranormal shifter/magic romance without mpreg, the third book in the series and should be read in order to understand the context. This is a unique take on shifters but the author keeps their mythology consistent across atleast the first 3 books so far.

This book continues on from book two, a few weeks later I think. Declan and Jasper have a past, so when the Mage shows up out of nowhere asking for help, Declan can’t trust him. This book frayed at the edge of my nerves with all the suspense and this author wrote it so well! The world-building from the previous two books really shone in book 3 so that I already understood the culture, background of this pack and why the characters would react as they did. I cannot wait until Barrett’s story next! What is going on ?!! If you all haven’t read the first two books, go back, it will be worth it!

This book was a slow start but once the story picked up, it was a good read. Gage really annoyed me in this book with the bonding of Declan and Jasper, especially since Gage’s bonding wasn’t that smart in his book. Jasper’s life was so sad, and his family is the definition of power hungry and just awful. Overall, Declan and Jasper are a low-key toxic couple that found a place in my heart.

Of the 3 I've read so far in this series this one has been my least favorite. Second chance romances are not usually my thing. It was still cute and definitely helped push the overarching story along. It is also good to see Declan get his happiness.

Well written story by Claire as usual. The thing this book does best is further the story. Can't wait for the next book

Before reading the book, I was worried if I’d be able to finish it. I didn’t like Declan from the first two books and adding Jasper, a traitor, I was prepared to skip and skim. Thanks to the author’s excellent writing and the engaging storyline, I finished the book. The first half was a bit of a struggle to read as I didn’t care about the two MCs. The second half was easier to read as the story moved along. Still don’t care much about Declan and Jasper but I am happy to read the next book.

I am never disappointed in this author. This is the third in a series and I am now impatiently waiting for number four!

Declan and Jasper were excellent characters. Their second chance story had some mystery with a dash of trust issues and a sprinkling of an attraction that won't let go, a fantastic addition to the series.

I don't know why this series is bothering me so much, but it is. Jasper's redemption seemed forced and rushed and Declan, whom was a grumpy turned into a softy in minutes. I just want to know how this will end, otherwise I don't care for anyone. Maybe only for Barrett because he intrigues me.

Jasper was sent by the Warren to destroy the pack. Declan does not trust him cause Jasper just walk away from him years ago. As events progress, Jasper tells the truth about why he is there and he has helped to destroy three other packs. Now wants help to stop Warren. Can they trust him. These books get with each read.

1.0 out of 5 stars was looking forward to this book....so disappointed
Reviewed in Canada on March 3, 2023
I made it to 38% before I decided this book was not my cup of tea and no love born from these two would be anything but toxic.

This book was such a contradiction from book two where gage literally abandoned his mage and now they all fall for jasper hook, line and sinker?

I’m already so turned off by the main characters personalities I can’t finish this book and turned off from the rest of the series because of it. Too bad,I enjoyed the first two books.
