Legend of the Winged Lion: Prequel to Guardians of the Forest Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

A diamond tumbles into a chasm. Lightning arcs across a starlit sky. A forgotten Evil wakes.

Bears and wolves race to the mountains in frenzied obedience to the Evil’s command. Transformed into monstrous creatures, they lay siege to the caverns of the High Alps, home of the Sleih and Gryphon.

Ilesse’s destiny is to be a powerful Sleih seer. But when the Evil touches her, she must battle its whispered promises – or see her world destroyed by her own hand.

In her village, Gweyr scrubs pots and dreams of her mother’s wistful stories of wise beings and magical flying beasts. But when the Evil threatens her people, she discovers dreams can hold the key to victory.

Will Ilesse accept Gweyr’s budding magic? Can they be allies in the fight against evil?

Cheryl Burman grew up as the child forever reading on her bed. But as this was Australia, she was also often tempted outside to the beach and the yabby creeks near her suburban home. When she moved to the Forest of Dean in SW England she, like Tolkien and Rowling, was inspired to write. Given she is lucky enough to live in a place chock-a-block full of history, legend and myth, there is much to draw on. She does so, as well as on her own childhood in Australia.

She started with middle grade fantasy, discovered a taste for historical fiction, also that short stories and flash can be fun, and now she has moved on to historical fantasy. She likes a challenge and a change.

As Cheryl Mayo, she is a former Chair of Dean Writers Circle and a founder of Dean Scribblers, which encourages the creative writing spark in young people in the community. She is also the co-author, with her (now sadly deceased) border collie of the ever-popular Sammy's Walks Dog friendly Walks in the Forest of Dean, which is available on Amazon and in local outlets in the Forest of Dean.

What first caught my attention to this novel was the exquisitely artistic cover. After reading it, I decided that if you’re going to write fantasy you’d better have two skills packed up in your author’s kit: the ability to tell a story and a keen imagination. In Legend of the Winged Lion (Guardians of the Forest) writer Cheryl Burman exhibits both of these admirable traits.

Cheryl Burman penned a stunning fantasy starring gryphons, wizards, queens and kings, and magical creatures (warning, some not so good) within a countryside filled with mountains, fields, and quaint villages.

As with most children’s fantasies, there’s a chosen-one, but the breakout character has to be Ilesse, a 'prentice seer. Burman makes sure we fall in love with her spunk and root for her to conquer the evil that breaks out over the land. But just when you think she’s winning, Burman throws her readers for a loop.

The tension to know how the story ends made me stay up late one night to finish the last quarter. That’s a cliché, but it’s the truth. If you like fantasies with nail-biting passages, read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another magical adventure!

Another magical adventure from the author of the Guardians of the Forest stories! This is a prequel, but works equally well as a standalone book - my 9-year-old son who hasn't (yet!) read the other books enjoyed hearing it as a bedtime story, and particularly liked the magical creatures - Hestia the gryphon was his favourite. On the other hand, his big sister (who is a long-time fan of the original trilogy, to the extent of dabbling in fan fiction!) delighted in spotting links between the books, and really appreciated how this story explains so many little details in the later books.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story - I’ve got to read Guardians again!
Reviewed in Australia on March 13, 2022
I loved Cheryl Burman’s Trilogy “Guardians of the Forest’, and now I know where the Sleih and the Madachs came from.
Burman writes with a wonderful rhythm which leads the reader from scene to scene, breathlessly waiting what’s happening at the same time on the other side. The voice of evil in this legend is sinister and seductive. The warmth and vibrancy of good does not make it a foregone victor, as the two forces battle for ultimate control.
Burman’s capacity to describe her characters is remarkable. They are there warts and all! Yet the subtle nuances of their behaviour give genuine depth and vibrancy to all they do and feel.
As with Burman’s other novels Guardians of the Forest” and “Keepers” I came away feeling I really knew these characters, and understood why they did what they did, even if I didn’t always agree with them!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 11, 2022
This is a genre that I haven’t read in many years, but now I’m hooked! The Legend of the Winged Lion tells a tale that is complex enough to captivate an adult, but mysterious and other-worldly, to entertain children. I loved the plucky character of Gweyr, especially.

The language is exquisite, with phrases such as: ‘hamlets strewn like tossed gravel over the high plains,’ and ‘those Gryphons of poetic leanings would bask with folded wings and hooded eyes, listening to birdsong, watching the rise and dip of butterflies…’ - simply enchanting.
