She’s a reluctant time-traveller. He’s a lover destined to die. Can she save him before the witchfinder puts her to death?

What if you fell through a time travel portal and landed in Tudor England?

How long before you say the wrong thing to the wrong person? Before you’re accused of being a witch?

For Justine Parker it’s almost immediate. She hardly has time to find her feet in a historical world that’s hostile for women, before she’s on the run from a ruthless witchfinder. He makes it his deadly mission to submit her to a terrifying trial. And if that doesn’t kill her, he’ll burn her to death.

Justine needs to do whatever it takes to keep out of his clutches. But she can’t do it alone – as a stranger in Elizabethan England, she needs help. Handsome Sir William could be her saviour – and even her lover – but his time is running out fast. A cruel twist of history says his own death is imminent.

Now Justine has to face a terrible choice – save herself, or change history and save her new love?

Unless she can find a way to do both.

About the Author

Jonathan Posner is a novelist based in the UK, with a passion for the action and adventure to be found in Tudor England. He has always been captivated by Tudor history, and has also been a lifelong fan of action-adventure novels. So when he decided to write a novel himself, it had to be the kind of adventure he loves to read; one with plenty of action, danger and suspense. And, of course it had to be set in Tudor England, with a time-travelling heroine finding herself thrown into the deep end of this fascinating historical era. The result was The Witchfinder's Well, the first part of the trilogy (this book, The Alchemist's Arms is part 2). Book 3, The Sovereign's Secret, is due for publication in Summer 2022. Jonathan has also written The Broken Sword - the first of a series of adventures featuring an unconventional Tudor heroine called Mary Fox. More books about Mary's adventures are also planned.Jonathan's other works include a book of short stories called Once Upon an Ending, a one-act play called Private Eyes, as well as book and lyrics for three Musicals - Spirit of History which premiered in Old Windsor, Hot, Mean & Green, which premiered at the Rhoda McGaw Theatre in Woking, and A Fine Time for Wine, which also premiered in Old Windsor.Jonathan is the father of two adult sons and lives in Exeter, UK. When not writing he is a regular presenter on local radio.

Jonathan has been an avid reader of fiction ever since he was old enough to own a torch. As a schoolboy he virtually lived in Narnia, and as he got older, he got into historical fiction - particularly Phillipa Gregory, Susan Kay, C J Sansom and the Flashman Papers.

He loves creative writing, and has written the book and lyrics for three full-scale Musicals, all of which have been performed by community or professional casts. There have also been two plays, some dubious-quality poetry and several short stories.

In 2015 he upcycled the plot of one of the Musicals into The Witchfinder's Well, a full-length Elizabethan action and adventure novel, available on Amazon as eBook, paperback and hardback.

This was followed by the second part of the trilogy - The Alchemist's Arms - in 2019. In Summer 2022 the third part - The Sovereign's Secret was published.

Jonathan's other series, set in the early 16th century, starts with The Broken Sword. The second in the series, The Tudor Prince, is slated for publication in 2023.

Jonathan has two adult sons and lives in Exeter. His love of Musicals has led to him presenting shows on local community radio stations featuring songs from stage musicals - for over thirteen years on Marlow FM, and lately on Phonic FM in Exeter.

I was first intrigued by the idea of a modern-day job working in a Tudor castle. Then, when Justine is transported back to Tudor England, I was further entranced. There is so much here to enjoy...a strong female character, time travel, a modern woman dealing with Tudor ideas, and a handsome lord.

This is an interesting time travel romance. Justine Parker works at Grangedean Manor in 2015 and is an events coordinator who puts on reenactments of Tudor times. She is transported back in time to Grangedean Manor of 1565. Her appearance in modern clothes and her ingenuity cause the local peasants to think she is a witch and they go off to tell the local Witchfinder. Meanwhile the local lords mother runs into her and sees decides to help her by turning her into a merchants daughter who is visiting her.
This story really shows how people can be turned into a mob by their ignorance, fears and a talented person to lead them. I felt how terrified Justine must have been to be hunted by this Witchfinder and the local mob.
In 2015 Justine admires the painting of William (The Lord of the manor) and learns all about him, including the fact that he dies on July 31 being stabbed in the local tavern. When she is transported back in time, she has a strong attraction to William. She decides to see if she can change history and prevent William from dying and in the meantime try not to be tried as a witch.
I found the historical context to be pretty accurate of the time period and the story was fun to read.

This is an action-packed, page-turning, time-traveling romance. Our time traveling protagonist, Justine Parker, works as an event coordinator in Grangedean Manor, when a violent electrical storm transports this resourceful, history-lover back to Grangedean Manor in the 1600s.
She is soon in the sites of a witch hunter, a very frightening and persuasive man. Justine makes friends and enemies, finds love, and decides to follow her heart and attempt to change history. I hesitate to say more, as I don’t to spoil it.
Well researched with the right number of historical details. Lucky for all of us, there are two more books in the series.
I listened to this book in audible, very well done. Hope the rest will be available soon.

This is an exciting trip back to Tudor times! In this well-researched novel, we are immersed in the past, but with a guide: Justine from modern times is transported back to the world that she has studied, and about which she has coordinated many reenactments. She becomes more entrenched in the times than she would have wished, as she is accused of being a witch. This fast-paced novel includes history, plenty of action, and romance, too.

Fun read! Started a bit slow, but then picked up the pace and then hard to put down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced storytelling
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2016
This is a nice piece of fast-paced storytelling. It doesn't get bogged down with over the top descriptions. It contains some interesting historical words and turns of phrase - I don't know if they're all accurate or not, but I enjoyed them, and it does appear the author did a decent amount of research.

I didn't know anything about the plot before reading it, and found the couple of twists in the first few pages genuinely arresting.

The zealotry of 'God-fearing folk' never fails to make you shudder. Here, some 450 years ago, it's Christians going after witches. But sadly some things haven't changed all that much today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended for all whose interests include history with more than a hint of surrealism
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2018
“The Witchfinder’s Well” is a novel with historical accuracy and an excellent gripping style, with surprising twists and turns in the tale as the story unfolds. I am particularly keen on the strong elements of surrealism which give the story its unpredictability, thus offering full rein to the reader’s imagination, starting with Justine’s transportation from 2015 into 1560s England. The ensuing events make riveting reading and the descriptions of the witchfinder’s practices really highlight the power he, and doubtless real figures like him, had to whip up crowd enthusiasm, akin to mass hysteria, for the proposed punishment, giving little hope of a fair trial beforehand.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in 16th Century British history, qualifying this by saying it is not based on the lives of royalty but on the aristocracy and the ordinary people of the era. I live in hope of a sequel, to gain further glimpses into the lives of the main characters who have caught my imagination, making me want to learn more about them.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 29, 2020
I really enjoyed this book, I love history and although it is fiction, the historical facts are just right. I read it in one evening and went to get the next book. The Alchemist. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes time slip fiction and also the period in which it is set. Thinking about all the women - and men too who died because they had been accused of Witchcraft is awful, because that is what happened. That is not fiction! But if you want a good read and enjoy history too this is a book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable escape into the past
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 17, 2016
I found this an enjoyable and enthralling escape into the Tudor times. Refreshingly light compared to some better known historical writers, who do sometimes waffle on about nothing. I had various scenarios anticipated for the ending, but not the one that the author chose.
