About the Author

My name is Huckleberry Rahr. I am a mathematics instructor from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. I grew up with lesbian moms who inspired my love of reading. My mom had a huge collection of women authors with heroines as the protagonist. My favorite genre was fantasy and science fiction, that is, until I discovered urban fantasy. What my mom's library lacked were books with characters that looked like my family: diverse in background, gender identity, and sexuality. I decided if I couldn't find that series, I would write it.

A Interesting Take of Twilight but Better!

A Interesting Take of Twilight but Better!
Yeah, I said it, this is better than Twilight. Lol. Please note I didn't read the books. Not yet anyways. Just wasn't a big fan of the movies, expect for that fight scene in the movie. However, that's my own separate opinion. Anyways, this book has incredible cast of characters you learn to love and adore. One of my favorite characters has to be Dayo, even though she was only a minior character only shown in a few chapters, I hope to see you again in the latest installments. Otherwise every one else has their moment to shine including the main character Jade. I absolutely love her story arc and how this first one ends. It has such a plot twist and I adored it for it. In fact, there were a lot of plot twists in this book let alone including the beginning and middle, so be sure to remain on your seat for this rollar coaster of a ride. I'm glad this was my fifth and final book of my READEMBER 24! I would ask for anything else better to read. I'm giving this entity a 4.75 out of 5 stars!

The first time I read Wolf Healer as an advance reader (free, before final edits), I was blown away by the twist in this story. That really impressed me, since I find myself to be difficult to surprise.

Reading this polished version (which I have purchased) of a unique High School/Shifter fantasy was a true pleasure! My review is based on this final version, and is in no way affected by the fact that my first read-through was free. All opinions are honest and this is a spoiler-free review.

What a great debut novel for Rahr!

LGBTQ+ elements are integrated naturally throughout the tale, focusing on self-acceptance, self-love, the struggles of peer pressure and familial pressures to be different forms of "normal", and empowers youths to be kind but confident in who they are as people and the way they treat others.

Jade starts the story off knowing her path in life without question. She has poured her heart and soul into achieving that goal, and waited for the day that she herself would finally be able to shift into wolf form.

But friendship and love trumps her best-laid plans, and she finds herself in a whole new world within the world that used to be her safe zone amid clueless humans.

With teen angst and drama pitted against very real-life stakes under the cover of Shifter acceptance, this tale is one that many YA Shifter lovers who want something deeper and more 'real'. Romance doesn't take center-stage here, and the theme that does is beautifully riveting.

Well done, Huckleberry! I can't wait to read book two.

This young adult urban fantasy is geared more toward a teen-aged audience but I believe many adults would enjoy it as well.
The protagonist is a high school sophomore named Jade, an excellent student who believes her life goals are pretty much set...until her trip to Florida when everything is thrown into chaos.
At its heart, this is primarily a story about the strength of friendship and familial bonds. There's also wonderfully humorous scenes and teenage snark galore. And let's not forget about the furry side of the fun! Yes, there are werewolves.
If you enjoy paranormal tales that include an LGBTQ cast but would prefer one without a romance, then this is the book for you.

She was a healer in training and a calming presence, until she shifted into something other than what the pack was expecting. And now she has enemies who were supposed to be family. Now she can no longer look at life and death clinically.

Twists, turns, tumbles, and trauma tear through this intro to the Jade Chronicles.
You will NOT be bored! And you'll want more.

I don't read a lot of werewolf books. (I tend to be more witchy.) It did take me a bit to really accept this book. I wasn't sure how I felt about all the twists. I sometimes felt that there was too much coincidence. Once things were set into place, though, I loved it. I found that I liked what felt like a more true sense of how the animal aspects of werewolves would interact. I liked that the author was not afraid to get dark at times.
Mostly I loved how diverse the characters were. The difference in how people were treated by those who knew them and by those who simply judged. How the reactions to diversity played out in the werewolf community as well as in the regular human community. I loved how well both the main and supporting characters felt fully developed. I felt like I really got to know and care about so many of the people!
I truly recommend this book. I plan to read more!

I haven't read too many books on shifters especially of the were form. I actually loved this book and plan to read the whole series. This story was so incredibly interesting. I was fighting through a vast array of emotions. Big props to the author. You have definitely got my attention. Huckleberry Rahr I have noticed you.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was amazing to see the diversity in this book and the general overall acceptance of others on their own terms. I also loved that, although it was YA, it was NOT about fated mates. Instead, it was about family and acceptance overall and being true to yourself. It also cracked me up that the regular adults kept not believing that Jade was the competent healer she was. I am looking forward to learning more about her calming powers as well. I have already recommended this book to others and will continue to do so.

The writing was very good, and the editing was well done. Overall, the sense of community throughout the book reminded me of Audrey Faye's/Debora Geary's books.

If you'd asked me to read a book about werewolves and full moons a few years ago, I'd probably have declined. And been a bit sick. But the Wolf Healer combines the power of friendship, belonging and social difficulties perfectly. It's an exciting story of an unpredictable nature, cleverly executed yet easy to read. I'm looking forward to reading the second one.
