Write in Another Language: 10 Easy Steps (Write in 10 Easy Steps Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 20 ratings

Would you like to write in another language? Here are some practical writing tips to get you started!

Knowing different languages enriches your life and through that your writing. I decided early in my career to write in English, even though it’s my third language after Finnish and Swedish.

Now a bestselling writer of 16 fiction and three nonfiction titles, I am a former BBC journalist, translator, and magazine editor. I began writing fiction after gaining an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University over ten years ago and have since sold nearly 200,000 copies of my books on Amazon alone.

In Write in Another Language, I share with you a few practical tips on how to write in a foreign language. I also discuss topics such as how language affects our behaviour, touch on linguistic theory, and reveal writing techniques I have found useful.

Four other bestselling authors writing successfully in a second language, Heidi Amsinck, Freddie P Peters, Andrienne Lecter, and Eivor Martinus, also share their writing advice and techniques in this book.

“Helena's experience and tips are excellent. She covers foreign languages, language itself, and even writing as a whole. I highly recommend this book to anyone hoping to express themselves in a second language.” – Amy McCracken, Editor, Designer, and Author.

From the Author

I am an author of ten fiction and two non-fiction books. Apart from my thesis, which I wrote in Swedish, I've written all of my twelve books in English, even though it's my third language.

I graduated with a Baccalaureate from a college in Finland, got my first Masters in Marketing from a Swedish School of Economics and an MA in Creative Writing from Bath Spa University in the UK. You could say I'm addicted to learning!

I am a prize-winning author of a thesis on British Politics and many of my books have been number one best-sellers in their categories on Amazon. Apart from writing, I also help other authors, write, publish and market their books, something which I enjoy immensely.

As an author who can write in more than one language and is familiar with different cultures, you are well placed to describe the human condition in fresh ways. You can gain a certain sense of detachment from the subject matter and you can take your readers to another place that they may not have experienced in the same way as you, a native, have.

Writing in another language gives you a unique perspective on life. Knowing several languages and cultures intimately enriches your writing, but it also gives you a different voice.

In
'Write in Another Langauge: 10 Easy Steps', I help you as an author writing in a non-native language to gain confidence and to appreciate those aspects of your writing process that need extra attention. I also discuss various online tools that you can use and the invaluable contribution native first readers can give you.

I hope you find
'Write in Another Langauge: 10 Easy Steps' a useful tool in your author journey!

About the Author

Helena Halme grew up in Finland and moved to the UK in her twenties. A trilingual, she's a former BBC translator, journalist, magazine editor, and bookseller. Since gaining an MA in Creative Writing at Bath Spa University, Helena has published ten fiction and two nonfiction titles.

Helena believes that there are many benefits to writing in another language, which is why authors such as Vladimir Nabokov, Joseph Conrad, Elif Shafak, Karen Blixen, and many more have decided to write in another language.

During her fifteen-year career as a writer, Helena's language choice is something she's been asked a lot about, so she decided to note down her tips on how to write using a second or third language. The result is
'Write in Another Language: 10 Easy Steps'.

I write Nordic love stories inspired by real life. I was born in Finland and moved to the UK in my twenties after falling for a British naval officer I met at the British Embassy in Helsinki. We wrote letters for four years—him at sea during the Falklands War, me at university—and our long-distance romance became the inspiration for my first novel, The English Heart, which later grew into the Nordic Heart series.

I’ve always been passionate about books. As a teenager in Stockholm, I devoured every novel I could get my hands on (often before my parents had a chance!). That love of reading led me to writing, and eventually to publishing fiction in 2012 after earning an MA in Creative Writing.

Now I write full-time, drawing on my Nordic roots, love of dramatic landscapes, and belief that stories have the power to connect us. My latest novel, To Melt a Frozen Heart, is an enemies-to-lovers romance set in Lapland, where the Northern Lights blaze and love blossoms against the odds.

I downloaded this book because I'm working on a guest post for a language blog about how bilingual speakers experience different emotions between languages. Helena's book is informative and encouraging for writers with skills in more than one language. I loved reading about her research and adventures in learning technical Navy vocab to add authenticity to her novel. Thanks to Helena's Ebook, I got up today and hammered out 500 words in my 2nd language.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem of a book

The list of exophonic (writing in a language that is not their mother tongue) authors is growing rapidly thanks to unprecedented opportunities opened by technological development. Still, all of them face challenges which are almost impossible to understand for someone who never tried to master a foreign language.

Professional writing is a life-long endeavor requiring unbelievable effort. Add to it the burden of a foreign language, and next time you see an exophonic writer, take your hat off because you’ve just met a superhero.

The market is full of books offering advice on writing but it is really difficult to find any advice for people who write or aspire to write in a foreign language. Helena Halme’s book is filling this gap with gusto.

The book is not only encouraging but offers practical, down-to-earth tips from someone who understands all those challenges. What’s even more important, her book provides the readers with the hope that with hard work, enthusiasm, and belief, everything is possible.

Thank you for the book I’ve been looking for for years. And I’m waiting for an audio version so that I could listen to it repeatedly.
