Editorial Reviews

Review

"Alison Morton is the energetic and well-connected writer of a successful, ever-expanding series of alternate history thrillers and also of non-fiction, so advice on writing from her is always going to be worth reading. Her discipline as a writer is evidenced by her ability to encapsulate these nuggets of advice into neat and well-formed articles of just 500 words.

This little volume is a handy source of inspiration and motivation not only for the new writer, as the subtitle suggests, but also a tonic for writers at any stage who might be flagging or lapsing into bad habits.

As an established author myself, but always conscious of having more to learn and needing constant head-patting to keep me motivated, I thought this little book was a tonic and a pick-me-up that would benefit any writer. I'll be keeping it on my Kindle to dip into now and again whenever I feel the need of a cheerleader."

Alison Morton writes award-winning thrillers featuring tough but compassionate heroines. She lives in Poitou in France, the home of Mélisende, the heroine of her latest two contemporary thrillers, Double Identity and Double Pursuit.

Her eleven-book Roma Nova thriller series is set in an imaginary European country where a remnant of the ancient Roman Empire has survived into the 21st century and is ruled by women who face conspiracy, revolution and heartache but with a sharp line in dialogue

Six years’ military service, a fascinating with ancient Rome and a life of reading crime, historical and thriller fiction have inspired her writing. On the way, she collected a BA in modern languages and an MA in history.

Alison Morton is the energeticand well-connected writer of a successful, ever-expanding series of alternate history thrillers and also of non-fiction, so advice on writing from her is always going to be worth reading.

The book repurposes a series of succinct articles previously published in a local magazine, which is why a few of the pieces have local references or sound as if targeted at a particular parochial audience, but they're none the less for that.

As an established author myself, but always conscious of having more to learn and needing constant head-patting to keep me motivated, I thought this little book was a tonic and a pick-me-up that would benefit any writer. I'll be keeping it on my Kindle to dip into now and again whenever I feel the need of a cheerleader.

Disclosure: I know the author personally because we have the same publisher (SilverWood Books), we both belong to the Alliance of Independent Authors, and we have both been guest speakers at the Romantic Novelists' Association annual conference.

I'm a seasoned writer, but it was good to be reminded of the most important aspects of writing which often become obscured by those more interested in promoting their own success than helping others. An excellent guide for newbies.
