Write a Collection of Short Stories in a Year will ensure that your stories are NOT among them!

This book will support you from the first to the last word of each one of your stories, whilst nurturing your talent as a writer.

The path you’ll go on ensures you won't just wander, you'll know exactly where you're going.

You may also find the separately available companion workbook useful.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Maria Frankland lives in Yorkshire, home of Yorkshire puddings, Yorkie Bars and Yorkshire tea – incidentally three of her favourite things.

When not eating or drinking these items, she can be found dreaming up and executing the darkest of psychological thrillers.

With nineteen full-length novels, two novellas, a memoir and two poetry collections under her belt, she is living out her childhood dream of being able to write full-time.

Maria has a teaching degree and an MA in creative writing. She is published by both London-based publisher, Bookouture, and also independently, through her own publishing company, Autonomy Press.

She lives and breathes reading and writing and is always thrilled to be able to offer a helping hand to other writers as they head towards their own success.

I like the concept and exercises for this book. Already I'm working through the Supernatural section, which seems to be the first short story to work on, but it should NOT be. According to the Table of Contents, there should be a section on Flash Fiction, but that only has a list of all the author's books. What happened to the teaching about Flash Fiction?

This book guides the reader to reach into the imagination and write original stories. The chapter on supernatural stories helped me write a story I'm pleased with. I'm looking forward to the rest of the book. I downloaded this book through Kindle unlimited, but I think I'll buy the paperback.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good so far - I'll update you in a year 😉
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2021
    First impression:
For 99p, this is definitely a risk worth taking!
Also, as Terry Pratchett commented that short stories always cost him blood, I thought a guide would probably be useful.

    The background:
    I have a book (and a pseudonym).
Or rather, I have a series of books which follow a handful of characters.
But there are other characters who I would be interested in branching out to follow too. Other stories which yearn to be told.

    The course:
MVFrankland is a best-selling author of domestic, psychological thrillers - a subgenre of crime.
She writes for a living, and teaches others to write in the rest of her time (I hesitate to call it 'spare' time, because teaching others is hard work!).
She knows a fair bit about character development, plot arcs, ramping up the tension and so on - things that are applicable to every genre.
And she has done her homework on the genres which are not her own, applying her general, broad knowledge of writing to each genre she visits.
When the course reaches the 'Crime' genre, Maria gives more than a simple overview.
This is excellent for two reasons.
First - Crime is a very large genre, and a more in depth look is both appropriate and welcome!
Second - and perhaps more important - the author does not pretend to have authority and knowledge which she can't back up.
    The genres covered are:
    (Flash Fiction)
    Supernatural
    Science Fiction
    Romance
    Children's Picture
    Crime
    Young Adult
    Fantasy
    Historical
    Comedy
Each genre is divided into three sections (with the exception of children's picture books - and flash fiction, obviously).
The first section deals with the background of the genre, and covers a general writing skill as well; you are guided through writing your own short story (except for the ending) in draft.
The second section helps you to write your ending, and then to edit the whole of your draft.
The third section helps you to get your short story polished and ready for print.

    The verdict:
On first pass through, this looks to be a very well-structured and informative course. It looks like it would be well worth the full price too.
My flash fiction had my daughters asking for more, so that was a success (being as I wrote it for them).
This course has an accompanying print workbook. I have a system I already use for planning and writing, so I chose to use that instead. As the exercises are all written within the course text, you may find that a notebook and pen are all you need.
This course is also available (I believe) as a face to face, live, paid-for online course - and has previously been taught in person.
It translates very well onto the written page and was enjoyable on the first read-through.
I'm looking forward to going back to all the exercises over the next year.
And - when I have truly finished the course - I'll come back and update my review... 😁
