Welcome to The Rook: Book Three: Masquerade (Welcome to The Rook! 3) Kindle Edition

The city of The Rook is a glorious misstep in architectural history—a London that overshot the mark. With Elizabethan arches elbowing Georgian facades and Victorian rooftops flirting with steampunk plumbing and ambient sorcery, it teems with whispers and wonder. Home to oddities both human and hypothetical (goblins are never ruled out), the city beckons the curious to poke about its secrets.

In Book One –
The Hydromancer’s Stone, an ancient statue was unearthed beneath the city, though “unearthed” is a generous word for something that tried to summon a demon. To stop the aforementioned fiend from breaking out of stone-and-mortar prison, the four sigils of the city’s peculiar brand of mafic were required. Cue a series of close shaves involving untidy assassins, sulking mages, and goblins with murky loyalties. The stone was secured. Three more remained.

In Book Two,
The Stones of Binding, the Circumancers’ head honcho nabbed two more stones, with one fatal scuffle on the Skyhook Balloon Docks for good measure. The Terramancers’ leader—perhaps out of guilt, perhaps out of boredom—handed his stone over willingly. But when all three were finally used to silence the statue, it turned out the third was a fake.

Now, in the final volume, the last stone must be wrested from the cold, possessive hands of those who intend chaos. But time may be against our heroes, for the demon, long slighted and hell-bent on revenge, is railing at the bars of its cage - and so... let the masquerade begin...*

WELCOME TO THE ROOK!

WELCOME TO THE ROOK!

Welcome to The City of the Rook. Picture, if you will, a city that can't quite decide if it's elegant or just a bit odd - part Elizabethan relic, mostly Victorian soot, with a dash of steam-powered nonsense for flavour. It's a huge, complicated city; the streets twist and turn in every direction...

CHARACTERS YOU WILL ENCOUNTER IN THE ROOK

ERISA

ERISA AND CALICO, THE CAT

Erisa and Calico (who may or may not be a cat) roam the streets of The Rook, looking for a few "loose" things for Tobias while keeping a close eye open for an adventure. So far, none have appeared, but that is all about to change...

TOBIAS GRIMGAGE

TOBIAS GRIMGAGE

Tobias Grimgage runs "Grimgage's Goods", a vaguely suspicious pawnshop on the edge of the Shambles. Always on the lookout for bargains and with one eye on the next deal, he is Erisa's unofficial guardian, though he isn't entirely sure if Calico is actually a cat or not.

CAPTAIN VIRGIL STEELE

CAPTAIN VIRGIL STEELE

Captain Steele heads the city guard, which he runs with military precision. A grizzled veteran, he is never happier than when knocking heads together. Not a man to ask questions first, he is constantly irritated by the mayor's more modern ideas.

LYSANDER RAVENCREST, CONSULTING DETECTIVE

LYSANDER RAVENCREST, CONSULTING DETECTIVE

Lysander Ravencrest is the famous "Consulting Detective", renowned throughout The Rook as potentially a genius at solving crime along with his partner, Doctor Gregory Bancroft. That's the official line, anyway. The unofficial one is although undoubtedly very clever, he can be extremely irritating at the same time. Ask Bancroft. He'll tell you.

DOCTOR GREGORY BANCROFT

DOCTOR GREGORY BANCROFT

Doctor Gregory Bancroft is Ravencrest's assistant, as long as nobody calls him that. He is involved with all the consulting detectives' work and is usually the fastest to the solution when Ravencrest becomes distracted, which he very frequently is. They are, however, a fine team—as long as they don't kill each other first.

MAYOR BRADLEY MACKRELL

MAYOR BRADLEY MACKRELL

Bradley Mackrell is the mayor of The Rook. A man of great ambition and small patience, he is the person at whom the buck stops. Despite not being able to remember anyone's name and being in a state of constant irritation, he rules the city with an iron fist. He likes tea, Stickball and a nice custard cream. (Though not necessarily in that order.)

ROALDE DeNEUF

ROALDE DeNEUF

The ultra-rich string magnate Roalde DeNeuf has a great secret. Being not so fond of the rich and more likely to help an old lady across the road than be seen as a man about town, he has a secret alter-ego. He fights crime in the city of The Rook wherever he can find it. Along with his over-supportive butler Alfred, DeNeuf is a key player in the events about to overtake the city.

VERITY APLEY (SPECIAL REPORTER)

VERITY APLEY (SPECIAL REPORTER)

Verity Apley, special reporter for “The Rook Recorder,” is the underpaid and overworked journalist at the very bottom of the ladder in the city’s sole newspaper. Things are looking up, however, as one of the mayor's new initiatives has given her unique access to the city guard run by Captain Steele. Sparks are about to fly…

WELCOME TO THE ROOK!

Welcome to The City of the Rook. Picture, if you will, a city that can't quite decide if it's elegant or just a bit odd-part Elizabethan relic, mostly Victorian soot, with a dash of steam-powered nonsense for flavour. It's a huge, complicated city; the streets twist and turn in every direction like they were laid out by a cartographer with a grudge, so getting lost is practically a local sport.

The architecture's a glorious mess: ancient Elizabethan beams groan under the weight of Victorian brick, and the odd brass pipe spits and steams for no other reason than because it can

In The Rook, it pays to watch your hat, your wallet, and, on occasion, your dignity. Every street holds secrets, every shadow a story, and every district has its own peculiarities, which will very quickly become apparent to anyone who'll stand still long enough, whether they like it or not. Welcome, dear reader, to the city of unexpected twists, questionable inventions, and charm that refuses to follow any sensible blueprint.

Mike lives in Liverpool, where he spends his time writing books with a humorous edge on just about anything that takes his fancy. In a former life, he created best-selling and critically acclaimed text-based adventure games for the ZX Spectrum—an achievement that simultaneously fills him with pride and serves as a handy reminder of just how old he actually is.

Mike is the author of the Victoriana steampunk series, which is full of clockwork contraptions, top hats, and the occasional airship-related mishap. His latest series takes readers to The Rook, a city draped in the trappings of a thinly disguised Elizabethan-Victorian London—where intrigue lurks in the alleyways, and the gas lamps never quite seem to flicker the way they should.

When the time is right, Mike plans to retire to a quaint windmill somewhere remote and keep bees. The bees don’t know this yet, though he suspects that they may have opinions on the matter.
