Twilight of the Colossus: Fading Empires Series Book 1 Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 30 ratings

In the year 2083, Earth’s major remaining governments are completely powerless by the rise of hegemonic megafirms that now have near virtual reign over every aspect of life. Any who oppose the corporate state are crushed in its ever-expanding shadow.

Beneath the towering skyscrapers of the affluent elite, a violent dance unfolds as super gangs clash in a hyper-kinetic struggle for territorial dominance amidst the desolate urban wastelands, where mere survival is an achievement for the downtrodden masses.

Amidst this chaos, pockets of resistance begin to form, led by figures like Leonard Kilbane, a seasoned ex-black ops warrior struggling to unite a disparate band of mercenaries against overwhelming odds. Yet are the formidable forces arrayed against his team and others in revolt, too much to withstand?
Meanwhile, cracks emerge from within power structure itself, embodied by the unlikely duo of John Hughes and Frank Coletti, members of the oppressive police forces. Through their daring investigations, they peel back the layers of deception, uncovering clandestine networks operating beneath the veneer of law and order. What secrets will they uncover and will friend become foe?

Fading Empires: Twilight of the Colossus is the first book in the Fading Empires Universe, an epic multi-part science fiction saga. It blends suspense, visceral action, and nightmarish encounters in a near-future setting that feels chillingly plausible. At its core, it’s a riveting tale of friendship, defiance, and the fight for survival against the backdrop of a world on the brink of collapse.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"...The fear and determination of Kane's beleaguered characters jump off the page...Despite the government's near-total control of the masses, some dare to fight against this oppressive society...every facet of people's lives remains urgent and compelling throughout. Readers who like action-packed street-punk anime-touched adventure that never stops will enjoy this vivid, unflattering look at what humanity's capable of."
—Publishers Weekly

"A real universe is being created here and one that I will follow in any media form it may expand to! I really do think this has the potential to become a blockbuster franchise!"

—Matt Taff, Emmy Award winning producer

I found a gem in this book, venturing into a new genre. The narrative centers on Kilbane, a rebel leader, with vivid, cinematic scenes. Particularly compelling is Lita, a strong, intelligent woman who stands out in the story. Beyond the action, the character development is captivating, with Lita's resilience making a significant impact. I highly recommend this book for its engaging storytelling and strong characters—it’s a must-read for any reader.

I enjoyed this book immensely. The author vividly portrays a very plausible near future where the divide between the haves and the have-nots is dangerously immense. The characters were believable as were the descriptions of various futuristic tech. I can’t wait to read what’s next!

A thrilling dystopian sci-fi thriller. The story was a little slow moving in the beginning but picked up pace towards the end then left off in a cliffhanger. There were a lot of characters and moving parts to the story that came together at times. Overall the story was enjoyable and I liked Kilbrane’s character the best.

I must say that after reading Twilight of the Colossus - if subsequent novels in this series are as good as this initial entry, it's safe to say that Ian Kane has a sure winner on his hands!
Expertly written in such a way that it successfully draws you in and holds onto your attention from start to finish, this book vividly conjures up a world that is often quite nightmarish. Especially in the sense that a future of this nature is not exactly out of the realm of possibility, considering the often unpredictable tide of recent global events.
However, despite the realistic creepiness, it's reassuring to note that characters like Kilbane and (especially) the sensitive yet tough Brazillian woman Lita can retain their sense of humanity and compassion, rendering the events of this novel all the more life-like. What’s also interesting is how they provide contrast for characters like the dastardly Pike (my favorite), whose bullying nature emerges as all the more dangerous, considering his powerful physique.
Reading it from one scene to another, the narrative often feels cinematic in nature (especially the taut action sequences), and this technique serves to enhance the tension that is created in the mind and mood of the reader.
I can easily picture this as a TV or movie series and in the best of all possible worlds, it would surely be considered highly competitive.
Suffice it to say that I'll be investing a good deal of my time in reading future books of this series.

Ian Kane's cyberpunk noir thriller opus is here and it delivers! Right from the beginning where we learn of high concepts with great mysterious titles such as Megafirms, Weather Wars and Underzones, we know that in this far-flung future tale the audience is in for a wild ride that will hit the senses from all angles!

I feel this book may be fortelling the future, if we don't get on track in society.. It's on point, smart, witty, grim yet hopeful. Developed characters, splashy action, written with exquisite description with a love to detail and some bold dialogue. An amazing read! It makes us questions society today and wonder is the technocracy that we see unfolding before our very eyes lead to a fascist stronghold state in the future? A real eye-opener for sure! A real universe is being created here and one that I will follow in any media form it may expand to! I really do think this has the potential to become a blockbuster franchise!

This is an interesting book but had a lot going on. By the end things are starting to come together but there's still some threads that are a mystery in how they tie into the main story line. There's a lot of corruption and I'm interested in seeing where it all leads.

I was a preview reader for Twilight of the Colassus and rally enjoyed this science fiction book. The world-building is so solid that it sucked me in and I devoured it over the course of a week! The characters are compelling and each has interesting motivations.

The setting is an alternative future Southern California in the year 2083, but seems like something that could really happen, the way things are going. There are twists and turns that are surprising and make you want to turn page after page. I love it. It also just finished the follow-up book, Festering Abyss, which is equally awesome but in a different way. I do recommend it if you are a fan of complex worlds and characters with depth and humor.

Oh, and author Kane might be turning this into an animated series which is crazy because I thought the same thing (that it would make a great anime) when reading the books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great action and world

Twilight of the Colossus by Ian Kane has a really nice dystopian edge to it which I thoroughly enjoyed. The LA in which he has created is ruled by megacoporations only out for their self interest while the general population have to face roving gangs armed with weapons and a thirst for violence. I liked the representation of this world, which is well thought-out and deep..

There are a lot of characters in this book, with Kilbane being an excellent lead. I loved his troupe, especially when they headed out on different missions, and felt they all had unique personalities and motivations for working together. The plot has a slow progression to it in the early parts, however in the later half it really comes to life.

The action is great and there are some deeper levels to the narrative which those who like to scratch under the surface will relish. All in all, this is a fantastic dystopian world with great characters and a great story, and I look forward to seeing it develop.
