About the authors
Author Pamela Samuels-Young is a working attorney who squeezes in time to write whenever and wherever she can find it. Her desire to see engaging African-American characters in today's mainstream legal fiction prompted her to pen her first novel, Every Reasonable Doubt. The former television news writer earned her law degree from UC Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law. She has a master's degree in broadcasting from Northwestern University and a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Southern California. Pamela served as legal consultant to the Showtime television series, Soul Food, and speaks frequently on writing and 'Pursuing Your Passion'.
Attorney and award-winning author Pamela Samuels Young has always abided by the philosophy that you create the change you want to see. The Compton, California, native grew tired of never seeing women or African-Americans depicted in the legal thrillers she read, so she made up her mind to change that.
Dubbed “John Grisham with a sister’s twist,” Pamela is known for writing fast-paced legal thrillers that tackle important social issues. Her thriller Anybody’s Daughter, provides an eye-opening look into the world of child sex trafficking and was honored with an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Fiction. In Failure to Protect, Pamela examined the bullying epidemic and its devastating aftermath. The Law of Karma is her most recent release. In July 2024, Sounds Like a Plan, a novel she co-wrote with author Dwayne Alexander Smith, goes on sale.
Prior to embarking on a full-time writing career, Pamela worked as an attorney for O’Melveny & Myers LLP and served as Managing counsel for Toyota, specializing in employment law. A former news writer for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles and WXYZ-TV in Detroit, Pamela received a bachelor’s degree from USC and also earned graduate degrees from Northwestern University and UC Berkeley School of Law.
Pamela is a frequent speaker on the topics of child sex trafficking, indie publishing, and pursuing your passion at any age.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2013This is a story about a couple of Lawyers Vernetta, and Neddy mainly, They are thrown together to defend a multi millionairess Tina who is accused of stabbing her cheating no good husband Max to death. So many twist and turns in this story, it was so good it will keep you on your toes, and turning pages.
I have to say I did not care for Vernetta much at all. For a smart women lawyer she sure missed allot when it came to her loving husband Jefferson. I loved Neddy and Special. This cast of characters were so life like I felt like I knew them all. Special is Vernetta's best friend, and she could be so funny, but she had the smarts that her friend Vernetta was missing.
The trial and murder mystery in this story was amazing. I could see the court room in my mind, felt like I was right there.
KUDOs to Pamela for some really good writing. A fine fine job.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, you will not be sorry, it is a great almost life like story.
This was my first book by this author and it will not be my last, it was free on amazon for my Kindle and one of the best reads I have come across....
Happy reading Ya'll...............
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2013This was my first Pamela Samuels Young read. It was the legal twist that attracted me to it plus the book's cover. The beginning didn't pull any punches. Murder right away, followed by the proverbial whodunnit.
The cast of characters were vividly and colorfully revealed through lots of fast and easy dialogue. I felt like some of them were old friends from the past while some were friends I could do without.
The trial has lots of basic legal mumbo jumbo which most of us are familiar with, but there are also lots of twists and turns inside and outside the courtroom and the case itself, enough so to keep me turning the pages to find out more. I was not disappointed in the revelations and the ending.
The author did a great job of tying up all the loose ends to the case. Just when I thought it was over, the author spoke back and said to me in between the lines: "Not quite yet..." These were the fun and surprise elements to the story.
This was a fine read and the author treated me to another of her works with a little chapter to wet my appetite for another read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2016This book was fantastic!! I loved every bit of this story. From my goodreads:
Wow. I haven'd read a good legal thriller since the Client, and this was everything. It was fast paced, always kept my interest and it wasn't so bogged down with legal jargon that it was hard to follow. Vernetta was funny, witty, and strong and I enjoyed her POV. Her husband, Jefferson reminded me so much of the men, including my husband, that I have met in my life. With there views on adoption and the whole machismo that poured out their mouths with every line spoken. It wasn't too much and it was easy to see that yes he was a man, and had male ideas about what a wife was to do for him, but you can also see the weak parts in himself that he could only show his wife. I loved that. He was a such a realist character. I don't think that he was whiny at all.
Special, her home girl, was another character/friend that I felt every women has. That one friend that always says whats on her mind, even when you don't want to hear it, but have to hear it anyway. Vernetta's working relationships with both David and Neddy, especially Neddy, was something to admire. Being the only two African American Women at this law firm, at first you do feel like you have to be enemies (which I think it stupid, and brings up that whole thing about crabs in a barrel, but no one seems to understand, that a barrel isn't the crabs natural habitat but whatever) then being placed on this case made them put all that crap to the side and a great friendship bloomed.
But all in all, enjoyed this book. It was thrilling, but it wasn't as thrilling as I thought it might be. But since this wasn't from a POV of a PI or police officer, I can see why it wasn't THAT thrilling. The conversations were realistic and flowed very well. The characters were easy to see and I def will be reading the rest of this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Every reasonable doubt

4.0 out of 5 stars Legal Drama
Two African American ladies take on an intriguing murder case. Their relationship gets off to a rocky start but we track the personal dilemmas of each character as it weaves through the murder trial. These are 2 strong female characters but I did get frustrated with the whinging husband of Vernetta. Hey lady, you would be better off without him!!! A storyline full of drama, suspense, mystery, and legal intrigue. Looking forward to finding more from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Every Reasonable Doubt (Vernetta Henderson Series No. 1)
When attorneys Vernetta Henderson and Neddy McClain are tapped to take on the biggest case of their careers, they are less than thrilled about working together. Their strained relationship, however, is the least of their problems. Their socialite client--charged with mthe brutal murder of her husband--is demanding an immediate dismissal of the case. But a ruthless prosecutor is determined to make sure that doesn't happen. Forced to fight a common enemy, the two women close ranks and, in the process, develop a bond that sees them through the uncertainties of trial, the pain of betrayal and pressures neither could have imagined.
Vernetta's new husband Jefferson, anxious to start a family, unwittingly adds more stress to the mix. Tired of being placed on the backburner, his patience is wearing thin.
As Vernetta's professional life dangerously intrudes on her personal life, she starts to realise that providing her client with the best possible defence could come at a very high price. A victory on the case would propel her into her dream position - but how sweet will that be without the man she loves by her side?
An enjoyable, well written story. I'm off to read book 2 In Firm Pursuit (Vernetta Henderson Mystery).
Book 3: Murder on the Down Low: Vernetta Henderson Series No. 3 (Unabridged)
Book 4: Attorney-Client Privilege (Vernetta Henderson Series No. 4)
