Three isn’t always a magic number …

There are three reasons Tess Fenton should be happy. One, her job at the Blue Olive deli is dull, but at least she gets to work with her best friend. Two, she lives in a cosy cottage in the pretty village of Halston. Three, she’s in love with her boyfriend, Blake. Isn’t she?

Because, despite their history, Blake continues to be the puzzle piece in Tess’s life that doesn’t quite fit. And when she meets intriguing local artist Daniel Cavanagh, it soon becomes apparent that, for Tess, love isn’t as easy as one, two, three …

Hi, I'm Angela and welcome to my author page. I was born in London but grew up in Nottingham, and although I've lived in Saudi Arabia and France, England always pulls me back.

When I'm not reading or writing, I can usually be found playing with air-drying clay, making miniature book earrings. I'm simply obsessed with books: their feel, their smell, their stories, their covers... I could very happily spend a whole day in Waterstones – I'm the strange woman sniffing books in the corner! Thankfully, I haven't been forcibly removed. Yet.

I'm passionate about writing both contemporary and historical fiction and love time spent researching. In 2018 I signed publishing contracts for three novels with Choc Lit’s new imprint, Ruby Fiction.

I'm a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and a reader for their New Writers’ Scheme. I'm also a member of Nottingham Writers’ Studio, the Society of Authors and Ellipses and Ampersands’ fiction critique group.

If you've purchased Arlette's Story, Magnolia House, or You've Got My Number, I'm very grateful.

Thank you very much. xx

Another delightful book by this author! Angela Barton weaves an exciting story with interesting characters and vivid descriptions that make you feel you are there. Like her other books you won’t want to put it down. I highly recommend!

Angela Barton is a brilliantly talented writer who can write evocative and enthralling historical novels and uplifting, enjoyable and feel-good contemporary romances. Her latest novel, You’ve Got My Number, falls in the latter category and it is a fast-paced, fun and fabulous read I simply could not resist.

Tess Fenton should be happy with her lot in life. True, she might not lead the most exciting and thrilling of lives, but she has a good job working at the Blue Olive Deli with her best friend, she lives in a beautiful cottage in the picturesque village of Halston and is in a relationship with an ambitious and go-getting boyfriend whom she loves. Yet, Tess cannot shake off this feeling that while her life is perfectly pleasant, it has got a bit mundane lately. However, little does Tess realise that she is about to meet an attractive, intriguing and enigmatic artist who is about to turn her boring little world upside down and inside out.

Daniel Cavanagh is an artist who would be absolutely perfect for Tess, but beneath his charismatic façade lies a man with his own secrets and demons. Daniel is dedicated wholly to his art and has erected a wall of steel around his heart, but with fate seeming intent on pushing him and Tess together, he begins to wonder whether the time has come for him to take a leap of faith and a chance on love or whether he would be better off sticking to hiding in the shadows with only his art and dogs for company.

As Tess begins to find the courage to let go of all that is safe and familiar and to start making bold steps into forging her own path, Blake makes it perfectly clear that he will not give up on their relationship – even if it means employing less than salubrious measures to keep hold of Tess. Will his evil machinations prevent her from having a second chance at happiness? Or will love find a way to triumph against all the obstacles standing in the way of Daniel and Tess?

A charming and captivating read I fell in love with, You’ve Got My Number is a wonderful romantic read I absolutely adored. Angela Barton has got a wonderful gift for making readers laugh and cry and for writing involving, emotional and funny contemporary romances that you will not be able to stop reading. You’ve Got My Number is an excellent read that tickles the funny bone and touches the heart and features wonderfully drawn characters you will love and sympathise with – even somebody as dastardly as Blake is described in such a way that you cannot help but feel a little bit sorry for.

Witty, heart-warming and irresistible, Angela Barton’s You’ve Got My Number delivers on all counts!

There are times when a story comes along with just enough slices of real life, glimpses into the hidden view of a monster within that will anger, entertain, delight, and frustrate me – probably in equal parts. You’ve Got My Number is such a book. I absolutely loved the story, felt for the characters, and loathed one selfish man who put his own wants above the happiness of someone he was supposed to love. So, yeah, that’s a slice of real-life for many people, isn’t it?

It’s not easy coming to the conclusion that you might not actually be in love with someone anymore for whatever reason. Tess is approaching this decision when her boyfriend, Blake, drops an emotional bombshell on her and she stays – but not for the right reasons, and certainly not for the right man. Add to the mix an attractive man who fits so perfectly in Tess’s life if she were only truly free to pursue more than a friendship with Daniel, yet she feels obligated to remain where she is. To say that I found Blake’s actions despicable is an understatement, yet there are so many people just like him out in the world that it’s rather frightening.

You’ve Got My Number drew me in from the start and didn’t let go until the final page. The story flows smoothly, the characters (main and secondary) felt real and believable, and the conflict kept me on the edge throughout hoping that Tess would make the right decision for herself and Daniel – and that Blake would get what he so richly deserved.

I was caught up and invested in this story and feel that you would be as well. I’d not hesitate to recommend their story to any romance reader who loves a good love story, a villain to loathe, and a couple to root for as they work their way to a happy future.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, Choc Lit/ Ruby Fiction. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Tess has everything going right for her. A job she loves, a home she loves, and a boyfriend she loves. Well, maybe. When Tess meets local artist, Daniel, her life begins to feel not quite as in order as she thought.

This was a great story with lots of twists and turns. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think you will too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining escapism
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 1, 2020
I read this during lock-down, needing a bit of escapism and it was a great choice. As in “Arlette’s Story”, I loved the author’s descriptions. Tess, our heroine, is from Cornwall originally but is working near Nottingham in the village of Halston, “For her, living in Halston was like living in a painting. A narrow winding road curled around the village green, where grasses and wild flowers were given free rein to do as they pleased.” And “dark, wispy clouds obscured the apricot skies as if a vandal had smeared grey paint across a Turner sunset.” ; a description of a fig tree: “Dark fruit hung from its branches, like sleeping bats amongst autumn’s yellowing leaves.” When she visits her parents back in Cornwall, I wanted to step into that world too: “The beach was furrowed in ridges, as if it were frowning at the elements.”…”Water trickled down the cliff face, weaving in and out of velvety lichen and barnacles that were clinging to the rock.” Ms Barton has an artistic eye and is at her best for me when she describes her locations. Beautiful!
We need laughter too, don’t we? And there is plenty of humour in this story. I laughed out loud (and cringed too) when Tess meets the gorgeous Daniel, a painter with two gorgeous dogs with perfect names: Goya and Gogh. Loved that! Tessa had been preparing fish and gone out in a hurry to buy extra ingredients and forgotten her purse. (Haven’t we all done this at some time?) Of course, our drop-dead “magnetically good-looking” man of everyone’s dreams had to meet Tess for the first time with “fish scales decorating her cheeks”. And the time when she rushes out with the first clothes to hand in “a yellow and brown ensemble” and again bumps into the hunk. “’I look like a geriatric Brownie,’ she wailed.” I had to laugh. I loved too the newspaper headline about her courageous act when foiling a hold-up in the newsagent’s shop: “DON’T MESS WITH TESS” and the cringing photo that accompanied the article. There were loads of these snippets that made me smile. Thank you!
But what on earth did she see in Blake Snipes? (What a brilliant name for an anti-hero). This part of the story annoyed me slightly. He is an awful man and the deception he uses to try to keep her as his girlfriend is despicable. (No spoilers). He might possibly have been a catch in the past, but there was nothing to redeem him whatsoever in this story and he and Tess seem to have nothing in common. About the countryside and the fields of floating pollen, “Tess called it nature’s loveliness. He called it nature’s slovenliness.” He smokes as well. Why she let him stay in her bed even though she begins to realise that she must be rid of him was a big question mark for me. I know we all make mistakes and Tess is kindness personified, but I wanted to shake her really early on and tell her to get her life sorted. But, maybe that was the author’s intention?
Daniel, on the other hand, is a perfect “Byronic” hero, who reminded me of Darcy in his beautiful country pile. His advice rings so true, “Life is short. It has a way of coming up behind you when you’re not looking and pulling the rug out from under your feet.” YES!
This story is romantic, funny, engaging and a little bit escapist with a lot of truth and hope combined. Thank you, Angela for lifting me into another world for a few hours.
