- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2022This was a really good bibliomystery. The question of who killed American antiquarian bookseller Dr. Essenheim and where had the books and money he'd had on him gone is the focus and what a ride it was.
Frank Essenheim, his nephew and James Mannering, his assistant who is also the narrator of the tale, are the ones who initially take on trying to locate Dr. Essenheim when he's just thought to be missing. They shortly follow the trail to the Yorkshire Moorlands where the wealthy gentleman has been found dead on a rocky crevice. The investigation quickly centers on what he was doing in the area and who he may have met. No surprise, the bookseller was there because of a rare book (two it turns out) and both the books and cash are gone. From there the search for those he met and their motives and opportunity are the main of the story. Many locations and jurisdictions with a varied cast trying to piece together the clues made this fun to read. I particularly enjoyed this as a procedural and Detective Inspector Kimberley was great. The wrap-up was a bit of a whirlwind and very satisfying.
Recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2013An American millionaire goes missing. In London his secretary has no clue where he went or why. But the millionaire is like that, prone to disappear without warning, usually in search of rare books. It doesn't take long for the missing man's body to turn up dead on a wild moors in Yorkshire. The millionaire's nephew initiates an intense investigation.
J. S. Fletcher doesn't go in for a single heroic detective. The hunt for the murderer is undertaken by a veritable wolf pack of amateur investigators and real detectives, as in this book. A local squire is suspected of knowing something about the murder, and when he disappears, the pack of investigators traces his movements around the time of the murder. This involves dashing off to remote old Yorkshire inns with fun names like The Muzzled Ox, The Duke's Head and The Gamecock. Lots of tea and whiskey are consumed. Fletcher was himself a Yorkshire man, and he knew how to convey the wild landscapes, the atmosphere in old inns and the cagey behavior of locals chary of strangers.
The Yorkshire Moorland Mystery appeared in 1930, towards the end of Fletcher's career (he died in 1935). I sense Fletcher growing tired in this book. He wrote a hundred mysteries, after all.
In this mystery he recycles some plot elements from The Mazaroff Murder - a missing millionaire who carried too much cash in his pockets, a male secretary who served in the Great War, the wild moors as a setting for murder... But I found The Mazaroff Murder (1923) to be a much better book. The characters are well developed and engaging. The investigation in this book is somewhat dull - grunt work unrelieved by action scenes.
I like J. S. Fletcher, as a rule, and loved many of his books, but not this one. My favorites include: Ravensdene Court, The Middle of Things, The Chestermarke Instinct, The Herapath Property, and The Borough treasurer.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2024And this is one of his better books. I thought I knew early on who did it. But I was wrong. The reason for the missing star in the rating is that the main character is bland. He tags along while others do the detecting. I wish he had more spunk.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2022This is the first J. S. Fletcher mystery I have read. It attracted my interest because it revolves around the discovery of a perfect copy of the original Pilgrim's Progress, but there is little of interest to the bibliophile in the story and a few implausible details. The story moves fast and the ending seems rather rushed with details of the mystery cleared up rather too swiftly and easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Read
More a novella than a full novel, we again have the usual intricate plot found in this prolific author's work. Unusually, we are pretty certain of the responsible villain's identity well before the book's ending, but we are kept guessing right up to the final page to have this confirmed. Certainly not the best from Fletcher but still a decent read.
