Hi, I’m Carl Williams.

Born and educated in the UK, I have spent the majority of my adult life with my wife and three children living in France and Switzerland, but also travelling around the world on business. I consider myself incredibly fortunate in having had the opportunity to experience so many different places and cultures.

I wholeheartedly recommend the travel to everyone but the aggregation of 3am wake-ups for 6am flights, airport security, delays, lost luggage, packing and unpacking can eventually lose its appeal! Consequently, I now rarely travel for business and instead enjoy the fantastic quality of life that Switzerland offers – stunning mountains, lakes, and forests all on one’s doorstep.

I like change a lot, which has driven me to work as an employee and as an entrepreneur in a number of different industries namely; Sports Marketing, Medical Devices, Medical Retail, Energy Efficiency and Management Consulting and, in 11 different organisations – large multi-national companies, SME’s and start-ups.

Being involved in marketing some of the world’s biggest sports events e.g., the Olympic Games the FIFA World Cup and the Asian Games was undoubtedly the most fun I’ve had professionally, but the most dynamic and intellectually stimulating has been Consulting. Working inside so many different industries and companies is professionally enlightening although there is always some degree of déjà vu in that many of the day-to-day challenges organisations face are similar.

As I move towards the latter part of my professional career, I’m now using my 30+ years of international business experience to help young people start off and then thrive in the workplace. This has led to the publication of my first book – Young Zinger, How to Start Your Career One Step Ahead and Stay There (www.youngzinger.com).

I have long felt that formal education falls short in providing young people with essential life skills. Effectively, we need more emphasis on networking, job interview skills, personal finance, and negotiation and less on who won a battle in 1690!

I’m far from alone in this belief so the mission is clear. Start filling those skills and knowledge gaps without forcing anyone to go back to school and galvanize enough people in the process to influence real change in the system so that future generations are better prepared.

Join me on that journey.

Carl has used his broad business experience across the past 30 years to impart wisdom to recent college grads just starting out in business. I know from my time working with Carl that he knows how to assess a challenge and convert it into business. I wish I'd had this kind of advice when I was starting my career!

Carl Williams has successfully managed a difficult feat - write an original and compelling self-help book. Taking on the obvious but vastly underserved early career "market", he adresses the challenges, potential pitfalls and easy-to-use solutions in an articulately written and appealingly well laid out book. He draws on personal experience, humour, a pinch of always welcome self depreciation, a well above average BS detector, and a keen eye for workplace dynamics to pull together a must-read for anyone in the early stages of the job world.
Using a cliché Carl would call out, I wish this book had been available when I was in my 20's. Buy it if you are, or buy it for your kids!

Engaging and pithily written, this book is full of wisdom acquired through many years of hard-work in various industries. I would highly recommend to any young adult looking to get ahead in the work place.

In fact, much of the common sense advice inside makes it a useful handbook for life in general. As such, Young Zinger reminds me somewhat of a modern version of Poor Charlie's Almanack (by Munger) which is high praise indeed.

PS I am also a C. Williams but not related to the author!

This is the book I wish I had read when I was just starting my business career. It explains in a jargon-free manner what to expect and how to navigate corporate life to make the most out of your career. Even today, with many years of professional experience behind me, I found it very relevant and full of actionable advice.

Carl Williams has truly outdone himself by crafting a book that offers a fresh and captivating perspective on self-help literature. This book addresses the personal and professional holes in our education system, providing readers with practical solutions to common challenges and pitfalls they may encounter. Williams' writing style is both articulate and engaging, making this a book that is difficult to put down once you start reading.

The author draws on his personal experience and a wide range of knowledge to deliver a wealth of advice that is grounded in reality. He also infuses the book with humor and self-deprecation, making it accessible and relatable to a wide range of readers. I also really appreciated not attempting to re-make the wheel when it came to certain aspects, like changing behaviors, and instead made reference to other books about the topic.

Williams also has a keen eye for workplace dynamics, and he deftly navigates the nuances of the new hire journey and interacting with coworkers. His advice is both practical and empathetic, making it clear that he understands the challenges that many early career professionals face.

Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone who is just starting out in the job world. Its clear and concise language, relatable anecdotes, and practical advice make it an invaluable resource for those who are seeking guidance as they embark on their career journey. Carl Williams has truly set the bar high for self-help literature, and this book is sure to become a classic in the genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very informative read for navigating the working world
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 27, 2023
Given that school curriculums focus on maths, languages and sciences, reading this book really helps to fill in the blanks on navigating new experiences in the working world. As someone in their early twenties, often prone to imposters syndrome in the working environment, I found some of these tips are really helpful when facing new challenges with better information and more confidence. It's a very easy read, with a lot of really nice personal touches and fun stories from the authors life experience, making you feel more connected. It is definitely a book to keep around for reference at different times as each chapters highlights different challenges you may face. They may not all be applicable to you at one time, but definitely at different points throughout your career. Would highly recommend!

An outstanding book! Kudos to C R Williams who has published a much needed book aimed at young professionals who are serious about moving their career forward. (or for their parents who want to support them). It is practical, insofar as it addresses concepts that do not need to be read chronologically; insightful, with lots of tips, strategies and genuine guidance: C R Williams writes in a style that “speaks” to young professionals while at the same time acknowledging their value. It is “a must read” and/or a great gift from parents to their “young adult” children. Every little bit of sound advice in this book will help them succeed in pursuing the career they want. Congratulations C R Williams, you have hit the nail on the head with Young Zinger.
