- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2023Venetian Rhapsody by Tonya Penrose is a captivating romance that transports the reader to the magical city of Venice. Eduardo, a charming and successful olive grower from Spain, and Sofia, a smart and adventurous American, share an instant connection that neither can explain. They have a whirlwind romance in Venice, but unexpected complications force them apart. When they meet again a year later, the “unexplainables” continue to draw them together.
This book is not just a unique romance but a feast for the senses. The city of love will come to life with vivid descriptions of culture, delicious food, bridges, and canals. There are plenty of lovable and colorful characters to fall in love with along the way! The plot is engaging and magical, with twists and surprises that kept me hooked. The book also features a companion album by award-winning composer and musician David Bazo, who created original songs inspired by the story. The music adds another layer of depth and emotion to the reading experience.
Venetian Rhapsody is a beautiful and enchanting story that will make you believe in love at first sight and the power of destiny. It is a perfect read for fans of romance and music. I highly recommend it! Five magical stars from me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2023Venetian Rhapsody is not an ordinary love story. It is an experience. Tonya Penrose allows us to take an emotional journey along with the characters into the birth and rebirth of a timeless romance. Venice, the City of Love, provides the perfect ambiance for this story. From the initial meeting, I was instantly intrigued and drawn to these charismatic characters, Sofia Martin and Eduardo Diaz. They are both successful, levelheaded, and likable people who find themselves drawn to each other in inexplicable ways. Neither are looking for love and both have other important commitments, but fate seems to have a hand in continuing to put them in each other’s paths despite their resistance. The beautiful companion original music written and produced by David Bazo enhances the mood, heightens emotions, and tantalizes your senses. Venetian Rhapsody Prelude and Venetian Reverie especially were so hauntingly beautiful I was brought to tears.
Sofia Martin is a doctoral student who is finishing up her program and will be returning in two weeks to Boston to become a museum curator. Eduardo Diaz is an olive grower from Spain who is in Venice to meet with his uncle. Her first glance of Eduardo Diaz in an outdoor café sparks a feeling of familiarity Sofia can’t identify. A second brief accident between the two is both charming but contentious. After a third meeting at Sofia’s professor’s home, the two decide to spend some time together. They both soon realize they know personal things about each other they call “unexplainables.” Trying not to look too closely at their growing feelings, the two get to know each other by exploring Venise.
Tonya Penrose is a master of humor, quick wit, and snappy dialog. This makes the journey fun, entertaining, and gives us insight into the characters personalities. It also worked especially well as Sofia and Eduardo continued to keep things light and deny their feels, minimizing their connection. Ms. Penrose also has a way of creating such vivid descriptions that you can almost feel the breeze, taste the Italian delicacies, see the sunlight dancing across the canals, smell the fresh bread wafting from the bakery below Sofia’s flat, and of course, with the assist of Mr. Bazo, hear the mandolin/guitar players serenade the patrons and tourist. I felt as if I was physically drawn into the page and wasn’t released until the last page.
I highly recommend this beautiful love story and the accompanying music.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2023Tonya Penrose is an incredible writer! Having read all of her previous books, and three of those being my all-time favorites, I counted the days until this book was released, having pre-ordered it. At just a few minutes after midnight on the release day I had the pleasure to begin reading it. I couldn't stop!
I love how her stories speak to you! They carry messages that go right to your heart! Wonderful spiritual messages for you to digest. There's also always a sense of humor infused throughout the stories at just the perfect time, making for an enjoyable lighthearted read!
I cannot tell you how many times I got chills on this beautiful journey. Sofia and Eduardo's love will stay with you forever! He is so charming and debonair you can't help but fall in love with him straight away. You will long to be in Sofia's shoes! And being from Spain, the endearing way he screws up inevitably every English anecdote, for instance, "I want what you call a do-again," instead of the correct phrase, "do-over." It's adorable!
The supporting characters are so diverse and heartwarming, including the two nosey "biddies" in Sofia's condo complex! Every single one lends an important role in Sofia and Eduardo's love story!
The way the author brings the area to life that the characters are in at the time, such as Venice or Spain, with historical facts and information without making the story droll and boring, is nothing short of genius! Geography is one of my least favorite subjects, unless Tonya Penrose is recounting it!
Some of the phrasing throughout the story made me stop and marvel at how it cleverly brought the scene to life in a special way, such as "The water's voice created an ambiance of serenity," and "their brisk pace signaled time mattered." I could go on, but you get the idea.
There are so many scenes that literally made me laugh out loud, beginning in the very first chapter! I love that this author can do that, it's not an easy feat!
The soundtrack that accompanies this book is as hauntingly beautiful as the book itself, and together they create an immersive experience like no other! Don't miss that opportunity!
I can't recommend this author, this book, and the music enough! I would give 10 stars if I could! I truly hope there will be a sequel!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Exploration of Venzia, Spain, and Fate
Sophia Martin has spent a year in Venice, working on her dissertation. Her life is planned in detail, and she will soon return to Boston. Then she meets a stranger that awakens strange questions and visions.
Eduardo Diaz comes from a large olive grove in Spain, which he must take over from his father, who is about to retire. Eduardo has been standing in for Milo Greco at the business academy. Seeing Sophia at an outdoor café awakens unwanted feelings.
Ginny is Sophia’s professor and friend. She is married to Milo, Eduardo’s friend.
Venice provides the backdrop for a meet-cute romance that could change Sophia’s and Eduardo’s lives.
Dina, the baker Lucia, and the ‘Angel’ Work hard to nudge them in the right direction.
Tonya Penrose knows how to write a romance. She also brings interest to her stories through mysterious elements that point to a deeper significance, a human longing for fulfilment, and our innate vulnerability. Needless to say, her characters are likeable, although, maybe unfounded, fears make them prevaricate and jeopardise their opportunities. Will Sophia and Eduardo come together? I won’t answer that question. To find out – you know what to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful romance with a touch of fantasy and humour set against the grandeur of Venice
Venetian Rhapsody is seemingly a Romance novel set in Venice, but it is so much more than that. It is an intriguing and enchanting mystery which unfolds following a chance meeting between two people: Sofia Martin from Boston US, who has come to Venice to finish her Museum Studies Doctorate, and Eduardo Diaz, a handsome, charming and self-assured Spanish wine grower. Their mutual attraction puzzles them both, especially as a number of inexplicable things happen whenever they’re together. The feeling that, somehow, they already know each other is powerful, added to the realisation that they know so many personal things about each other. Having never met before, they struggle to understand what is happening to them.
The mystery gradually unfolds against the sights, sounds and smells of the beautiful, historic city of Venice. The hauntingly beautiful music of David Bazo fills the senses as we take in the grandeur of ancient buildings and canals.
Apart from the two main characters, we meet some wonderful Venetian residents, including Sofia’s caring neighbours and her friend and mentor, Professor Ginny Greco. There is also Lucia, the ‘pleasingly plump’ baker whose delicious Focaccine Veneziane and other delights we can almost smell and taste. The words of a wise woman named Dina and the delightfully amusing Mr and Mrs Coo add to the charm and mystery of the story.
I recommend Venetian Rhapsody not only to readers of Romance, but to anyone who also enjoys a touch of humour and fantasy, in which the barriers of time are meaningless. All of that in a grandiose setting while listening to the soothing rhythms of beautiful gondola music makes this a collaboration not to be missed.
