Europe 1547. The rising tide of the Reformation threatens bloody revolution while the terror of the Inquisition grows, even for those who have converted.

Bethia, newly married tries to find her way in Antwerp, both the city and family she now belongs to a constant source of confusion – and sometimes fear. While her brother Will, enslaved on a French galley, doubts there will ever be an end to his torment.

Divided by both distance and faith, Bethia and Will each desperately seek a place of refuge from the looming maelstrom.
But there is no safe haven… unless Will denies his beliefs and Bethia surrenders those she loves. And yet the power of family can triumph, in unexpected ways.

'Weaves a wonderfully vivid tale of political and religious intrigue, transporting us between the rugged coasts of Scotland and the richest city in sixteenth-century Europe 'Richard Sheehan

The Seton Chronicles - all 5 books in series

'This is good. The history is rich and thick without being lecturing, the setting completely convincing, the characters strong, real, complex people. There’s delightful detail throughout.' Lexie Conyngham , Author of Murray of Letho Series

'I do enjoy historical fiction which is true to factual evidence. The author brings impeccable research into her work which helps to give a real sense of historical accuracy whilst at the same time giving a lively fictional account of what it was like for each of these stalwart young people as they continue to survive in a very troubled, political and religious, world.' Jaffareadstoo

'The metamorphosis of religions is intriguing and well portrayed..' Rosepoint Publishing

'Beautifully written from the beginning, Masters brings to life Antwerp, one of the richest cities in the world at that time. The horrors meted out to Jews, Protestants and Catholics in the wrong place at the wrong time are explored, without overwhelming the narrative and the tension builds steadily throughout the book as secrets unfold.' S E Morgan, author of Celtic Saints and Sinners Series

Hello!

Would you like three free historical short stories which tell more of the Seton Family? Visit my website vehmasters (just add .com) and pick up your copies of A Bonny Lass, The Sound of Silence and A Long Wait which build on The Seton Chronicles.

I grew up on a farm near St. Andrews in Scotland. St Andrews is famous as the home of golf but it was once a great religious centre and place of pilgrimage prior to the Reformation in 1560 – all largely disregarded when we were at school. The first time I was ever in its castle was aged twelve when our teacher took us on a rare visit – I was captivated.

The group who held the castle under siege for over 14 months, resisting the many attempts to re-take it, called themselves the Castilians and I remember thinking even then it was the perfect title for a book. I just didn't realise how long it would be before I wrote it!

I' ve now written five books chronicling the adventures of the family Seton as they flee across Europe escaping religious persecution desperately seeking a place of safety.

Set in 1547, mainly in Antwerp, The Conversos is romance, adventure and even historical political thriller. First introduced of the main characters is a young Scots woman who has married into a family with Jewish origin and converted to Roman Catholic faith, living in Antwerp. The safety of these people depends precariously on the wealth they create for their rulers through trade and upon their religious affiliation. Of course, there is much suspicion towards Jewish traders living in Antwerp who have not long converted to Christianity. Indeed, there is enough happening through Protestant challenges to Roman Catholicism in the Netherlands, Scotland and England. And the new husband of our young Scots woman is also involved in the publishing and book trading industries – in circumstances in which books with any kind of reformist Christian treatise are banned, therefore being produced and sold in secret at good profit… Punishment for those who challenge religious orthodoxy, and who don’t know the ‘right people’ to moderate the judgement upon them when brought before the court, is brutal.
The second main character is the young Scots woman’s brother, introduced some chapters after her and whilst he is a captive oarsman following the siege of the Scottish town he was living in. He is portrayed very well as earnest, considerate and pious by nature.
Although the narrative description is vivid and clear throughout, the tempo of the story picks up with the introduction of this brother and his fellow oarsmen slaves out to sea. (I had been finding a bit slow and laboured the romance theme alongside the young Scots woman’s challenges settling in with her new husband’s family, who are wary of disclosing some information about themselves to her and the risk she is running by joining their family in Antwerp.)
V E H Masters write both female and male characters convincingly. All the characters have distinct personality and voices and definitely ‘come to life’ for the reader. They have backgrounds, implied and explicit, introduced at good pace so the reader easily gets to know the full cast and their relationships with one another. John Knox stands as a well-known historical character and is painted credibly in the story. There’s a good splash of occasional saucy humour in the mix, balancing out the more bleak or tense passages.
The settings are also delivered clearly, making this an engaging read for me (though I was beginning to detach a little before the introduction of the main female character’s brother, as explained above).
The Conversos is a sequel to Castilians, which I haven’t read. It stands alone well as an engaging and sometimes gripping story. I‘m confident readers of Castilians will enjoy this sequel.

Conversos is the second book in the Seton series and is better written than the first and with a lot of twists and turns.

Bethia and her brother Will experience many trials and challenges in their young lives which makes for a great read. Masters has an easy but descriptive writing style that makes the story flow along effortlessly.

Behia of Scotland has followed her love to Antwep, where his family speaks several languages, having migrated there from Portugal, from which Jews, converted to Christianity or not, have been expelled. Now that the series has incorporated my people's history, I can't wait for the next installment.!

This is the second book in the series, the first being The Castilians. A great story line the excellent historical research has brought the characters to life. I can't wait for the continuing journey of the main characters, Will and Bethia. If only history in school had been so interesting!

Conversos was my rare journey into historical fiction yet one I enjoyed a lot. The way the stories of Will, Bethia and Mainard's stories intertwine with the political and cultural changes of 16th Century Europe makes this an intriguing yet nerve-wracking journey as people's lives are threatened by their own beliefs and identities. I loved the fact that the characters have their own minds and plans that aren't necessarily in line with people's expectations and very much enjoyed the rich layers of the story and intricate details that make this novel a wonderful read. I can't wait to see what happens next.

Engaging characters and story based on historical facts. The main character bethia is likeable and believable. The interwoven history is fascinating and I have found myself searching out more information about the events at st Andrews.
You are left at the end of each book looking for more. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars The second of the chronicals is like a follow up film not as good as the first.

The first book 'The castilians' transported us to 16th century Scotland with enough correct historic detail to carry the adventurers of the characters in the plot. Unfortunately the next in the chronicles seems an afterthought with more far fetched adventure than concise plot but was still readable.

I do hope a third book is coming. The historic period is rich with material for the author to turn this into a series.
