- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2019Small town life has its own set of problems, mostly because everyone knows everyone and people like to talk. Having grown up in a town like the one Cunningham explores in Farm Girl, I immediately connected to the sensory-rich, personal story of a young woman returning home after years away.
Untethered and free to explore big cities and develop herself as a celebrated professional in her field of photography, Bea Hampton worked hard to create a life of independence. But a surprising and challenging turn of events prompts Bea to consider that her future might not involve a dream career "out there" but closer to home.
Remembering the early years spent in Finley Orchards as a special medicine, including the loving presence of her most supportive friend, it seemed like a perfect place to take a gap year and reflect upon her more authentic desires for connection, community, and support. With wit, charm, and a deliciously sensorial world to enter, Farm Girl is worthy of a whole day spent under a blanket, soaking up the community inside the pages. As a real-life farm girl turned city girl, this book reminded me of the caring community of my roots, where people come together to support their local businesses and support their residents when someone is in need.
Farm Girl is a stunningly beautiful novel that offers not only an escape into the comfort and charm of a small town in Massachusetts--- but a story of empowerment, showing how an uncertain young woman has all she needs to take the lead when something threatens to erase the most unifying place the townspeople depend on for connection and support.
Farm Girl reminds us not to assume that being young, female and single means you're less than capable or underprepared for big opportunities in life that impact a lasting change.
Other notes: To my delight, the book arrived ahead of the expected shipping date, and when I opened it, I loved the feel of it--you know how some books just feel exquisite because of the softness and smooth texture of the cover and pages? I experienced a sensory experience through the words of the novel, but also just holding it in my hands. The cover art is gorgeous, too---made from an intricate woodblock that highlights the bark of a beautiful apple tree. Readers who love stories of homecoming and community will be delighted with it, from the first page to the very last.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2019Corinne Cunningham makes you feel right at home in Cumberland. Think of comfy blankets and you'll understand why you want to immerse yourself into this novel. Bea, Cliff, Graham, Henry and more, draw you deep into their world of secrets, conflicts and loves with both family and community in their lives. The realization that in life, maybe the past makes you a better person, truly may be just what Bea needs to find as she searches for herself, while slowly allowing others into her life and accepting their help. This book is a must read, a good read, a read that reminds you of what you can be and what you can do with forgiveness, acceptance and love. What an Awesome Author!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2019This novel took me away to a place I wanted to just stay for a very long time, like forever! The small town, the local diner I wanted to hang out at and catch up with the locals, the family owned hardware store and of course the apple orchard. The characters are easy to endure and each time our main character is referred to as farm girl, I would tear up. Read it and find out why? It's a perfect book for the season too.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2019Set in a cozy, tight-knit, New England town, Farm Girl is a delightfully uplifting, yet poignant, story of embracing life's challenges, losses, and joys. The characters in this story are written so vibrantly that, even after having completed the book weeks ago, I'm still wondering how they're doing and curious about their current adventures. I hope to read more from Corinne Cunningham. And soon!
Still wondering if you should give Farm Girl a read? Other authors I enjoy whose evocative books are honest about relationships with family and friends include Sophie Kinsella, Nick Hornby and Jane Green.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2019The characters are so alive; I didn’t want this story to end! With a backdrop in beautiful and rustic New England, Bea, a young woman on the verge of self-discovery, goes through a whirlwind of devastation, surprising compassion, beauty in unexpected places, and a longing to belong. All of this (and more) to learn of the heart in human experience. What a stunning debut!
