A Midsummer Night's Kiss (The Howertys Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 33 ratings

What is a proper young lady to do when she finds a stranger sleeping in her bed?

Angelique Grafton knows little of love. But she knows she should walk away when she finds a devilishly handsome man in her bed. It would be the proper thing to do, especially since she's already promised to someone else. Yet for the first time in her life, shy Angel finds herself tempted to defy propriety—and her family's wishes—for a taste of freedom.

Nathaniel Howerty, the Marquess of Pensington, knows too much about love. After seeing his father destroyed by losing his wife, Nathaniel vowed never to marry someone he could fall in love with. But when he meets Angel, he can't deny their chemistry...and when she asks for a kiss, his carefully constructed walls begin to crumble.

As scandal threatens to destroy Angel’s reputation, Nathaniel wavers. Does he dare to leave himself vulnerable to the woman who might steal not only his kisses, but his heart as well?

The romance between Angel and Nathaniel takes center stage in this story, featuring sizzling chemistry and witty banter. However, there’s also plenty of personal character development, some of which is quite emotional (I’ll admit that I cried enough in the end to actually stain a page), and some fantastic side-characters. I especially loved Angel’s friendship with Jessica and Nathaniel’s friendship with Jacob, as well as both Angel and Nathaniel’s sweet and funny relationships with their siblings. On top of that, the story also features a bucket load of drama and some really detestable villains. A great ride all the way through, without a single dull moment!

This book is a fantastic debut novel! Set in early 1800s England, it has all the London high society drama that newcomer Angelique has to navigate - envious family, an over-protective brother, brother’s hot friends, terrible rumors… and much, much more (no spoilers here)! The character development really comes through for the leads, and doesn’t feel rushed/fake. The author’s writing style is so detailed that you can easily picture the scenes, which really sets the mood - whether funny, sad, romantic, etc. The detail doesn’t make it feel slow, it is easy to read and flows nicely.
I’m not sure how historically accurate it is (if anyone cares??), but I’m American so it seems fine to me!
Full disclosure - I did read this book, along with the rest of the Howerty series, when the author had it posted on Wattpad. I loved it then too, so my opinion hasn’t changed lol. This a much more polished version though and does correct some inconsistencies. I can’t wait for the rest of the series to be published!

The chemistry between the main characters is so sweet, their banter had me giggling and wishing I had my own Nathaniel.
What I liked most was the growth that Angel went through. From being this wallflower to someone who knows her worth and of course getting the love story she deserves.
Amazing writing style and very easy to read!!

I love this story! The feeling you go through reading this and the chemistry between the main characters is amazing. If you like to read regency romance novels, or like the show Bridgerton on Netflix and want a new series to read, then this is the book for you!

I received this book as an ARC and I am so happy I did. I loved the characters in the book Nathaniel and Angel work so well together. The humor of how they first meet too all their interactions are perfect. He is a rake but loves his family and friends with everything he has, I can’t wait for more in this series.

It is a very well written and wonderful book. There is plenty of character development to get invested into the plot.. the plot is also perfect for a historical romance with plenty of intrigue, tension, and.. of course.. romance.

the passion, the tension between angel and nathaniel is something I’ll never forget about this book. The longing but forbidden. Recommend to anyone who wants to read a regency romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot Regency Romance with themes that resonate
Reviewed in Sweden on October 5, 2024
The chemistry between the leads is palpable from the first page of this story when Angel finds Nathaniel in her bed. The mutual attraction carries the story forward and makes our heroine question decisions that have been made for her in her life, such as the promised marriage to another man. It's beautiful to see Angel gain agency throughout the novel, going from a meek wallflower to a blossoming rose. Her social struggles resonate even for a modern reader as making oneself heard can be a struggle in any era. Nathaniel's battle with grief and the decisions he's come to because of it are also relatable and understandable (even though you want to shake him and tell him to allow himself to love).

This is an excellent read that whisks the reader away to another place and time, allowing escape from modern struggles, while also allowing room for reflection. It reads like a breeze and I found myself immersed in the world of regency England in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historic Fiction with Spice & Sizzle

I usually don’t read that many historical fiction books, but this one looked really good and it didn’t disappoint. Right from the start, the chemistry between Angel and Nathaniel was off the charts and I loved their banter and dynamic. Philip, Marie, and Aunt Christine were formidable villains, and I enjoyed how Morgans weaved the societal norms into the plot to cause tension and conflict. The ending was perfect and had me cry. I’m definitely going to read more from this author and can’t wait for the second installment featuring Jacob and Jessica.

I absolutely loved this story, and Nathan and Angel. Couldn't put it down and immediately went to grab a pre-order for book 2.
