A Body of Water: A Black Beacons Murder Mystery (DCI Evan Warlow Crime Thriller Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 4,721 ratings

The egg man cometh...

When a delivery driver stumbles across the dead body of a reclusive author in a remote area within a stone’s throw of the Llyn Brianne dam, his first thoughts are that the elderly man has had a heart attack.

But the knife sticking out of the corpse’s chest tells a different story.

Dial in some missing walkers, a secretive cult, and the unwelcome presence of paranormal-hunting podcasters and DCI Warlow has his work cut out getting to the rotten heart of the case.

This dark murder mystery full of action and pathos with a dash of dark humour will keep you guessing. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk. JM Dalgliesh, TM Reid and Simon McCleave.

Rhys Dylan lives on the edge of the Black mountains of Wales with his wife and a dog who doesn't like the rain. Though he has written books for children and adults under different pen names in other genres, the Black Beacons Murder Mystery series sees him return to crime and his love of Celtic noir and dark humour. He hopes readers will find a brief escape from a very troubled world inside the stories. He does not expect to get rich as an author, but as someone once famously said, money can't buy you love, but it can get you some great chocolate digestives.

What makes a book work for me are the characters:I have to like maybe admire even love them. Dylan’s wonderfully drawn characters: Evan, Rhys, Catrin, Jess, Gil, Molly are for me “real”. I love them and I so much enjoy these books.

This book along with all those in this series definitely keeps you guessing! I've enjoyed them all and often find myself laughing out loud at DS Jones humor. I would like to educate the pathologist in this book. She mistakenly sited a Manta ray for the death of the Australian man who was in fact stung and died, by a cousin, a sting ray. Manta Rays have NO stingers or poisons. They are gentle giants.

Interesting story. Moves along at a good clip. Didn’t figure out the villain until near the very end. One nit, I could do with a lesser fixation on biscuits (cookies.)

I liked the writing detail, a little bit wordy at times. Enjoyed the descriptions of the country, my paternal grandmother was from Me rther sted ville(sp). It wadsmentioned in one of the stories. Really enjoyed the characters and the connection they had. Sad I am finished with the series.

I'm really intrigued with my new found exposure to Welsh and Scottish writers. There must be something in the water, or the air. Or maybe it's the ancient history, or some kind of attitude. Anyways, wonderful writing. Great character development. You have a great combination of serious crime with tongue in cheek humor. Loved the shout-out to TG Reid (Bone). There is an obvious unity amongst you guys.

I have read Rhys Dylan's books up to this point. Love Rhys's plots and characters. This book though has been one of my favorites. I would like to meet you Rhys, you resemble the "Wolf" in my mind. Looking forward to reading more of DI Warlow books.

Rhys Dylan has me hooked. I enjoy the characters in his stories—except the bad people, of course. He weaves a good read and I always want to immediately read his next book.

I cannot adequately describe how much I enjoyed Rhys Dylan's A Body of Water book. Mysterious, dark, funny, suspenseful. The characters are carefully crafted and bring depth to what one would mistakenly think is just a murder mystery book. This is not my first of his I've and I promise it won't be my last.

This is the 8th book in the DCI Evan Warlow series. I did read them in order, which isn't absolutely necessary, but does help with you getting to know the characters and see them develop. I have enjoyed them so much and am looking forward to reading the next one. Good, believable, plot lines and wonderful characters. I am Canadian and enjoy the little insights into life in Wales.

Oh no I’ve reached book 8 and will have to wait until September for the next one. I have read all 8 books in about a week and enjoyed them so much. The writing and editing is excellent. The characters are so individual, so different, Rhys is a sweetie Warlow an interesting man, Gil a comedian hiding an intelligent and kind man. They all work together as a team, I feel like I am part of it enjoying the welsh landscape and the thrilling murder investigations. I highly recommend these books.

Rhys Dylan write a good yarn. What sets his stories apart from the plethora of "detective " books is the well-developed chacterisation of the team, from the shadow carrying Evan Warlow, to young keen and developing detective constable, Rhys. All the police officers depicted have depth of character and diversity. The two sergeants are miles apart in personality yet their talents work well to support their team. What adds greatly to the interest of the series is that it is set in Wales with the language and place descriptions enriching the stories.
