On a continent where riders build kingdoms, she breaks them to build empires.

Realm-Building is open to all. On the continent of Elondria, anyone may become the next legendary dragon rider by building the greatest towns, cities, and even kingdoms.

Skálda Branwright dreams of leaving the Longcold and becoming the first Dragonlord to build an official realm. Only no dragon egg has ever hatched for her.

But when a hatchling falls to her from another world, begging for rescue, she must decide whether to surrender her dragon to death or become the worst criminal of all—a rogue rider.

But this is no ordinary dragon. By the time Skálda realizes what she holds in her hands, it is much too late.

Stealing this hatchling will come at a steep cost—breaking the republic she is sworn to serve... and eliminating the elf that created the rules for Realm-Building.

The same war machine that manufactures humans into riders to serve the elves.

A Queen will rise out of blood and dragonfire... and this is how it begins.

Jasmine was thirteen when she first dreamed of becoming published after devouring Eragon in a few days on Grandma's couch. As a nerdy introvert, her exposure to fantasy started with hiding out in the library with a great book.

Thirteen years later, her tomboy dreams came true.

Today, she is known worldwide as a part time beach hermit and a full time rebel. She is also the proud mother of two young children, Bubble and Mochi. Both happen to be little birds. The happy family currently resides in paradise, aka. Florida.

When she’s not reminiscing about her gaming days or getting lost in old epics like LOTR, Jasmine writes epic fantasy to entertain and empower, especially the underdogs.

This is one of the best books I have read in a while (finished it in a single night as I could not put it down). The book has such a unique take on dragon riders but still feels familiar for those who love books like Eragon and Fourth Wing (this book feels like a great blend of the two plus its own uniqueness). The characters are so well written and you feel for many of the characters and can’t wait to see what unfolds next. The lore and history is absolutely fascinating with very strong world building that really makes you invested in the world and the history.

The world feels alive with all the kings, politics, wars, schemes, loyalties and rule of law. The details truly transport you into the world and you can imagine yourself in the world.

It is always a pleasure seeing new takes on how dragons work and the magics that surround them or the magic in the world. And the way A Breaking of Realms handles dragons is so much fun (definitely gives off some Eragon vibes but also its own uniqueness).

The history of the humans and elves and others are so well done. It is always great to read a book that really takes the time to flesh out the world building and history so you understand why characters are how they are and why they see the world the way they do.

Usually I am not the biggest fan of having multiple viewpoints (mostly because I usually like a specific character the most and just want to read their point of view). But this book has so many well done characters and the different viewpoints adds so much to the story and the world that I actually enjoy all the viewpoints.

If you are a fan of dragon rider books (or really fantasy books with a great story/characters/world) then you should 100% give this a read.

ABoR is a great read with lots to enjoy. It is a true epic fantasy and takes you on a journey through what I equate to the Scandinavian tundra. When a wild dragon hatchling falls from the sky, Skalda takes it in. This choice propels us through the entire novel.

Skalda is a fun character to get to know. At her coming of age ceremony, she uses pure ingenuity to win the rite fest that would allow her to touch a dragon egg, with the expectation that it will hatch for her. She is the epitome of a “lone wolf” character until she is forced to join forces with a ranger of the elvish kingdom.

In the novel, we follow Skalda and her brother Eyrek. Where Skalda prefers to hide in the shadows, Eyrek is all about glory and battle. Eyrek has a flat character arc throughout most of the novel until we see him slip, as loyalty wins out over his sense of morality.

This foils Skalda’s character as she begins to connect better with everyone around her, developing a warmth she hadn’t possessed before.

Here's my favorite passage in the novel in regards to a rider and his dragon (pg. 436).

"Imagine he was not born in the hatchery, but in the wild. Imagine the Order found out about him. How far would you go to protect one dragon?"

"You cannot compare Asulf to a monster—"

"All dragons are monsters, my Lord. Would you protect yours with your life? The lives of your riders? How about the lives of everyone you know?"

Things I enjoyed with this book:

I loved the world-building. It felt real and well-grounded. This book also had a diverse cast of characters that made a fun read. I especially loved Skalda’s rite fest competition. She chooses only a shield as protection as she enters the wilderness in a race to the finish line. Nearing the end of the competition, she’s not in a position to win, but comes in first by using her shield as a sled to fly past the other competitors. Well played, and well written.

    Things I didn't like:

This book has two instances of bedroom scenes in the first half of the novel. Both are brief and can be glossed over in a few paragraphs, yet each of these scenes made me cringe. And not necessarily from the fact that we are in the room with the people involved with the lens pointed at the ceiling.

What bothered me most about these scenes is how the romance is more about lust. We get battle metaphors as the scene progresses in the second incidence and it nearly made me close the book. Which would have been a shame because I did enjoy this novel. I also felt the romance did little to build the overall storyline. It was just there for no other purpose than to be there.

One last thing (and this is purely a rant on word choice), but I competed in parliamentary procedure (think boardroom meetings with a gavel) as a high school student, and when you make a proposition to your group, you NEVER say “I motion...” It is always “I move...”

I've come across this issue multiple times in various books and it always makes me want to contact the writer and give them a run down of parliamentary procedure rules. 😅 I can't help myself.

    How I rate this book:

Plot Structure: 7/10; We have a big book, but I feel like very little gets accomplished. Skalda travels while Eyrek loses a potential crown. Outside of this, there is a great deal of great action, but it sometimes bogs down the storyline. I would have liked to see more from the promise of Skalda's ingenuity during the rite fest as we went on into the novel, but her choices usually were fueled by emotion rather than logic.

Character Development: 8/10; Skalda spends most of her time on the run with not much to show for it. The last few chapters after she rescues her friends, we finally see some growth from her, but otherwise, her arc felt slow despite all the action elements. Eyrek's storyline is a little stronger, but he's so focused on destruction that it's hard to see any growth from him. Several characters are brought in, but very few actually seem to play any significant role in the overall story. We meet Skalda's love interest for a brief moment, and then he's only mentioned a few times, but never seen. Once she starts her quest to return the hatchling, the love interest is only a passing thought.

    Language: 2/10; Minimal language.

Violence: 6/10; This book is very focused on action and battles. It can get gory in some places, and should be approached with caution for young readers.

Sexual Content: 7/10; We are in the room with the characters as their romance plays out, though not in great detail. These instances actually detract from the actual story.

I would recommend A BREAKING OF REALMS for adult epic fantasy lovers who enjoy a good dragon story with lots of action and morally gray characters.

I saw this book on Kickstarter and thought it sounded interesting. I downloaded this book and started reading.

The story is unique and addictive. I love how encompassing the world is. It is so immersive, I feel like I’m picking up a new language.

Halfway through this book I was back on kickstarter pledging to get the whole set in hardback.

Amazing read! Looking forward to starting the next.

I was immediately sucked into the story and enmeshed in the world. I love a morally grey character, the concept of noble dark is new to me but makes perfect sense. No one is ever good or bad but somewhere in between, and it depends entirely upon the situation.

I had a hard time following unfamiliar names, multiple characters, and a complex, somewhat convoluted storyline. Having said this, it's a compelling storyline. Skalda's courage, loyalty and love for her bael made me what to keep reading.

I will likely be facing another book hangover when I finish this series, and I can only hope it won’t be as long as the last sojourn. Perhaps I will be lucky as I was stumbling along and finding this one. World building is a craft all writers aspire to and few attain. Jasmine Young joins the ranks with the greatest writers. I predict it will be as timeless in its success as LOTR. My hats off to this writer, along with my sincere thanks for a superb read! On to book two…

I enjoyed this book once I got past the first third of it. I found myself struggling in the first few chapters as the world, the language and the context was really hard to follow. It felt like I was already in the middle of story rather than the beginning. After the first third of the book I started to get the hang of what was going on and got more engrossed in the story. There is a huge settlers of Catan or risk vibe to the book so if you like those board games this book will be enjoyable. It is unique and does not follow other sorts of dragon fantasy books so if you want something new you should give it a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Complex and densley plotted world keeping you turning those pages!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 4, 2023
Wow! What a complex and densely plotted world! In fact there is so much of it you could see yourself in one of these litRPG games, battling elves and levelling up your dragon. I loved the idea of a dragon having chapters and gaining more chapters to build their 'story' and with more experience, battles won, the rider gains access to more spells and dragon fuelled power.

I first met Skalda, and fell in love with Bael her dragon, in A Descent of Dragons, (a free prequel if you sign up to Young's newsletter) and Bael remains as cute and adorable as expected, (his piteous 'helps' are heartbreaking!) even though you know he is going to turn into that mighty beast found on the cover. And what a cover! Bael is gorgeous.

This story weaves together a complicated world of realms, kings and dominant elves. I have many questions! Lots and lots of questions, beginning with what does Skaldar's mother know and why the hell didn't she tell her daughter?

All is definitely not as it seems as we venture into the war torn world of realms and kings, where elves dominate and humans toil. There is much to be revealed before we can make sense of it all. I'm not convinced who is 'good' and who is 'bad' here, though all sides are committing atrocities.

Beautifully written, keeps you turning the pages into the early hours. Skaldar is a fearsome heroine and I can't wait to see how she gets herself and Bael out of the pickle at the end.

Can't wait to read book 2: A Breaking of Kings which is currently on preorder.
