An Easter Killing (A Killing Tree Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 42 ratings

Crown of Thorns Hill, clad in April mist, towers over the quiet village of East Thorne.
But on Good Friday, when the mist clears, the villagers wake to a malign vision at the hill's peak - a sight which catapults a flu-ridden Inspector Zig Batten from his holiday bed to a scene of desecration. Who is the victim? And what vengeful mind would dispose of a body here, like this?
In his search for reasons, Batten finds himself at odds with warring churchmen, lost lovers, ranting conservationists and shady developers. Even Batten and his colleagues struggle with their own mixed motives.
Do the threatened dwellings and apple-orchard of Turks Lane hold the answer? Or is it buried in the victim's past?
As the Easter weekend unfolds, Batten fears the worst is still to come...

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Paul Toolan is a bearded, left-handed, non-swimming Piscean who was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, quite a long time ago. He's now a Southern softie enjoying the green landscape of England's West Country. After a successful career in Colleges and Universities, he wrote book/lyrics for stage musicals before ‘turning to murder’.

His mystery novels feature Inspector ‘Zig’ Batten, an urban Northerner displaced to Somerset where, to his horror, he discovers they still have crime. Worse, despite a fear of flying, Zig must sometimes forsake cider-land to confront villains in foreign countries such as Greece and Spain.

Like Zig, Paul enjoys walking, fishing, gardens and the occasional whisky. Unlike him, he appreciates sport and mushrooms, and loves travelling to sunnier climes. His idea of bliss is a slow lunch at a beachside taverna after productively tapping a keyboard to the ebb and flow of the Mediterranean sea.

His rural noir crime mysteries are character-based, with intricate plots and a slice of humour. Though largely set amid the apple-orchards of Somerset, escapades overseas bring added variety. The series so far:

A Killing Tree

A January Killing

An Easter Killing

The Killing of Queen Mab

A Secret Killing

A Ring O'Bells Killing

All can be read in series or standalone. And keep a lookout for familiar characters and new landscapes in book 7...

'A View from Memory Hill' is Paul's first collection of "beautifully poignant and funny" stories, giving voice to the dilemmas of mostly older minds, whose common ground is the half-shaded landscape of memory.

For the most part, I thought this was a pretty great procedural. The crime aspects of the book were believable enough as was the investigation. Some of the characters come off a bit rough at the beginning and it took me some time to warm to them, but eventually, I did and found that I quite enjoyed most of this book.

There are some parts of this novel that can seem a bit thick and heavy to wade through at times, but then it begins to flow nicely again, thus, the reason I went for four stars instead of five. I liked the suspense in this novel and the certain way the author allowed the tension to build along with the mysteries, before giving any definite answers to the audience. I haven't read the other books in this series, but I like this author's style of writing and look forward to going back and reading what else there is in his catalogue.

The descriptions of the village are excellent and I love that the characters actually seem like real people with human needs and wants rather than one-dimensional paper people as so often happens in mysteries and thrillers.

I would definitely recommend this book to other lovers of crime stories.

Is is Good Friday in the small village of East Thorne. The villagers awake to a shocking sight on the Crown of Thorns Hill. (Those with binoculars that is. )

Detective Zig Batten is forced from his sickbed to investigate the murder. He is confounded by a semi-combative priest, obsfucating villagers and his attraction to a lovely pathologist and a host of other obstructions.

This is well written novel that is at times a little dense. I did enjoy it, however. Zig is not an easy person to get to know. This is my first Zig Batten book and I went to Amazon to look for his other novels.

I want to thank NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for forwarding to me a copy of this book for me to read, enjoy and review.

DI Batten is not just fighting a cold or man-flu as he says but he and his men are following a trail of mismatched clues that is baffling and makes no sense at all. A distressing sadistic murder mystery with religious intone that gives off bad vibrations to the public, A complex and intriguing story.

The intrigue begins when a woman's body is found hanging from a cross, on top of a hill on Good Friday, and continues to the very last page. An Easter Killing is Jam packed with a plethora of believable, but quirky characters. Descriptions of the countryside, in which the story takes place, are terrific and make the reader feel as if they are there, taking part in the action. I love the repartee between the two main protagonists; more power to DI Batten and DS Ball's Elbows, can’t wait to read about their next case. PS. Hope Zig will have recovered from his man flue by then. LOL.

Interesting plot and good character development (read as whole series or as stand alone). Enough complexity to read again and still find new detail.

Just finished Paul Toolan's third Zig Batten thriller. As a resident of the general area in which the series is set I must defend our local history of gruesome events, they are really not so frequent, but they make great stories....thoroughly enjoying the series and the characters who are both very familiar and not like anyone I know at the same time. Keep writing Paul.

This is my favourite Zig Batten story so far. Great plot, beautifully drawn characters and the story flows like cider. Here’s to the next one.
