A Fated Quest: A Retelling of The Golden Bird (The Miraveld Chronicles Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

Prince Gareth of Eynlae longs to be a knight and escape the compromise and cowardice of the royal courts, and especially his father, who seems to care more about his crown than his children. After defying the king one too many times, Gareth is granted his wish and sent to serve as a knight…but guarding a quiet border castle is tedious compared to his favorite legends.

When a prized firebird goes missing on Gareth’s watch, he eagerly volunteers to recover it. His hunt leads him into the neighboring kingdom of Aedyllan, where he falls into a witch’s trap and is forced into a deadly game of hidden motives and confusing prophecies. It may be up to a self-righteous prince, an intellectual fox, and an enchantress knight to stop the witch.

But in a world of multiplying injustices and the inexorable pull of fate, should the villainess’s quest to activate a fae curse even be stopped? Gareth will have to examine his pride and unforgiving nature if he’s to become the hero he’s always aspired to be.

Inspired by the fairy tales
The Golden Bird and Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf.
A Fated Quest is book three in The Miraveld Chronicles. It can be read as a standalone, but is best enjoyed after A Thieving Curse (The Miraveld Chronicles book 1).

(Warning for possible triggers: strained familial relationships, violence/blood, grief, references to off-page characters abusing power & SA.)

Fascinating!!

Fascinating!!
This was a really interesting fairytale retelling. I’ve never read a retelling based on the fairytales The Golden Bird or Tsarevitch, I’ve never even heard of them in fact. I had no idea what either were about so I went into this very blind. I went on a two hour road trip and I couldn’t put this down the entire time both ways! There’s a part that I didn’t know how there could possibly be a hea and yet, there was! I like how I can always count on this author having high stakes and characters that you can grow attached to!I received an eARC from the author, all opinions are my own.

A talking fox and a unicorn...what more could you ask for??? This was a gorgeous tale of learning to see beyond the black and white of justice and reason, and to put yourself in someone else's shoes before you judge. Gareth has a heart of gold, but needs to learn to make it a little less rigid. An evil sorceress, a beautiful knight, and a talking fox are the ingredients he needs to not only open his mind to see his own faults, but to understand and accept the same in others as well.

This is a fantastic book with loveable characters, lots of great plot twists, and a surprising amount of humor. I really really enjoyed it!

Some of my favorite things: Gareth's character arc (prince who would rather be just a knight learns Life Lessons). Anika's failure to be a true damsel in distress (who's better with a sword, Gareth or Anika?). Absolutely everything about Leo (he's a fox, he's a philosopher, he steals Gareth's food, he steals the show).

If you're a fan of fairy tale retellings with found family, cute animals, and sweet romance, you probably want to start reading this series approximately now.

Okay, it was this book that made me pick up the series. Why? The fox, that cute little fox on the cover! <3 <3 <3 Eek! When I heard that this book was going to feature one of my favorite animals, I knew I had to pick it up! (So yes, I did read the rest of the books in order first. I'm not a savage). And the fox talks! He was so funny and wise and just so cute! And his name is Leo, by the way. I just loved Leo so much! Definitely a reason to pick up the series.

The author talks about this book being humorous and she was so right. I had a few chuckles from all the banter and fox shenanigans that went on.

This book is also loosely inspired on "The Golden Bird" and "Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf". Which I am not familiar with, but I am now very interested. I mean, a talking fox in one tale and a wolf in the other!? It's a no-brainer that I now must know about these tales.

Also, did I mention that this book has a firebird and a unicorn? Because it does and I LOVE those things!

I also really like it when the damsel in distress is a very capable woman but also can use help from the hero. It doesn't put down either gender, but also shows that it isn't wrong to ask or accept help. Which is the reason why I loved Anika so much.

The book did a very good job of showing how to build relationships when the characters have different interests. Or even when the characters have the same interests.

Anika having magic was also very fun. This was so far the first book in the series where magic wasn't inherently evil.

This book felt a little different from the rest of the series. Rather than being focused on the romance, it was more focused on the quest. Which made sense with it being Gareth's POV. And don't get me wrong, I loved, loved this one! I didn't mind it being more focused on the quest part. It was what made Gareth, Gareth. And when the romance was incorporated, I was all for it! I've always liked when characters had similar interests to one another. To me, that is better than being attracted to their looks.

Who I Would Recommend This Book To:

Those who want a loosely based fairytale that isn't centered on the romance but still wants a little bit. Those who like quest-based stories that are character-heavy. Those who want loosely inspired retellings of "The Golden Bird" and "Tsarevitch Ivan, the Firebird, and the Gray Wolf". Those who want a capable damsel in distress. Those who want a talking fox animal companion.

    Content in Book:

    1. Magic. (Both dark and good magic). (Magic can cause the wielder pain such as headaches or starvation. Sometimes characters would use magic to hurt others).

    2. Violence. (Sword fighting. Mentions of a character getting scars from a bear. Other fantasy animal violence (biting, scratching, and slamming). Minor wounds and head injuries. Someone getting their throat slit with a sword. Some vague descriptions of wounds and blood and getting healed with magic. Wanting to wipe out an entire family. Etc.)

    3. Some rough relationships with characters' dads.

    4. Sexual. (Some vague mentions of some men taking advantage of other women and getting them pregnant despite being married).

What I loved about this book, in no particular order:

    • Leo, OBVIOUSLY. Fox = good, talking fox = better, philosophical talking fox = best
    • Gareth and Annika. 🥹 Truly a match made in heaven. The respect! The awkward armor cuddles! The love by swordfighting! They’re perfect for each other.
    • The themes of justice tied to compassion & the difficulty of always knowing the right thing to do in a complicated world.
    • You know, I read another book recently where I did NOT like the action/adventure quest plot, but this one I loved. Part of this difference is just that this was a much better book, but I genuinely enjoyed this quest story: high stakes, sort of mysterious but not confusing, plenty of action.

I did receive an ARC from the author, but I also ordered the ebook because this is one of my favorite fairytale series.

I cannot tell you how excited I am for the next book 👀

I never knew I needed a book with a philosophical fox trading witty banter with a prince who’d rather spend his days trading blows with monsters as an errant knight. But A Fated Quest by Selina R. Gonzalez fulfilled all of my unknown desires and more. This story, which was a retelling of the Russian firebird folktale, was both hilarious and captivating. It kept me completely engrossed from beginning to end, and I fell in love with each of the characters the author presented.

My favorite character in this book was probably Gareth as he struggled to discover not only his true calling and identity but also to wrestle with deeper questions such as the nature of evil. He learns a lot about himself, but he also recognizes where his black and white view of the world has hindered the health of some of his relationships. This transformation was done with grace and kindness, and it led to a beautifully satisfactory ending where all the characters discover new things about themselves and others.

Overall, I devoured this book with relish (just like Callista devours her post-magical meal) and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a clean fantasy book with plenty of action and a little bit of romance.

I was really looking forward to Gareth's story!
And it did absolutely not disappoint!

This story is filled with banter, humor, magic, quests, and love. The love element was especially beautiful because it wasn't only about romance but even more about friendship and family!

Gareth is charming, a bit stubborn, and heroic! He truly wants to do good. It was interesting to see his character growth and how he learned to see more sides to a story. After this story, I love him even more than in ATC.

Anika is a lovely, fierce, and strong heroine. She loves deeply, especially her family. She's an impressive character and a force to be reckoned with.

Leo is so funny and adorable. He definitely stole the show! Best supporting character ever!

Even the villain was a great character. She's complex and layered.

I really liked the chemistry Gareth and Anika had, and their romance was unique and sweet!
But I truly adored Gareth and Leo together. They were so funny! It was almost a bit enemies to friends and amusing to read their banter 😄

The world-building is amazing, just like in the other Miraveld books! I just wandered around in that forest (and other places), enjoying the journey!

There were some important moral lessons woven into the story that added some extra depth to it!

It was truly a magical adventure!
