Always Improving: Lessons from the Samurai, by Steve M. Beauchamp, takes the wisdom of the samurai and turns it into practical tips for self-improvement and getting more out of your day. The core message is all about pushing yourself to be better in a realistic down to earth manner.

Beauchamp introduces useful strategies, like the Pomodoro Technique, which helps you focus by breaking work into 25-minute chunks with short breaks in between. It's a simple but effective way to stay productive, and it fits perfectly with the samurai's idea of being fully present in the moment.

Another key point he covers is Parkinson’s Law, which explains how work tends to stretch to fill the time you give it. By setting shorter deadlines, you can actually get more done—Beauchamp uses this to show how we can boost our efficiency, similar to how the samurai maximized their training time.

The book is packed with ideas like this, all encouraging you to take small steps toward improvement every day. If you're looking for straightforward ways to become more disciplined and focused, "Always Improving" offers plenty of inspiration drawn from the samurai way of life, but with modern tools to help you apply it to your own routine.

Are you feeling more like a 'firefighter' than a leader? That is, do you feel like you have to put out the 'flames' of bad business decisions made by others? Do you often feel that you don’t have control over your time or future?

It feels like the author can read my mind. This book has been an eye-opener for me and is definitely one of my favorites to read over and over again. It's not just theoretical; it's a workbook that helps me identify my core strengths and weaknesses, with actionable guidance to improve my strengths. I really appreciate the author's approach of applying lessons from the samurai to personal development, emphasizing lifelong learning and continuous improvement. Highly recommended. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

I love history and learning about how different culture and people use to live years ago, and combining these lessons with business knowledge is very interesting. The author looks back on the old Japanese tales and traditions of the Samurai, and applies their wise saying and lessons to that of the modern day business world and leadership roles. My favourite principal was Kaizen which means alway improving. I'll keep that in mind for my personal and professional life.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Practical Guide to Integrating Ancient Wisdom into Modern Life

Steve's "Always Improving: Lessons from the Samurai" is a refreshing blend of ancient wisdom and modern practicality. What struck me most was the clear, no-nonsense explanation of the eight Bushidō virtues. These aren't just abstract concepts; Steve makes them real by sharing his own experiences and then guiding us on how to apply these virtues in our own lives.

I particularly appreciated the structure of the book. Each chapter starts with a personal story that brings the virtue to life, followed by practical tools and exercises that invite the reader to dig deeper. It’s this hands-on approach that sets the book apart, making it not just a read, but a workbook for self-improvement.

The style is straightforward and relatable, with just the right amount of detail. He doesn’t overcomplicate things but instead gives us a clear path to follow. For anyone who’s serious about continuous improvement, whether in business or personal life, this book offers valuable insights.

"Always Improving" isn’t just another self-help book. It’s a practical guide that can help you find balance and purpose. Steve has done an excellent job of making these ancient virtues accessible and actionable for today’s world. Highly recommended for those who want to improve not just their work but their whole life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bushidō in a practical and actionable format!
Reviewed in Australia on August 17, 2022
    Format: KindleVerified Purchase
The first book I have read that applies the eight virtues of Bushidō in a practical and actionable format. Combining positive psychology and samurai wisdom, Always Improving: Lessons from the samurai, is a humanistic approach to kaizen (change for the better) and living life authentically with the concept of Work:Life Harmony.

The stories and anecdotes in the book were relatable which I really appreciated making the book easy to digest. All too often books on Japanese culture are overzealous or overly romantic. That is not the case with this book. I found myself reflecting on many of the questions and quotes presented in the book. The writing got me thinking.

I love the author’s Work:Life Harmony kamon ( flower crest) that unravels as you read through the eight virtue chapters. It is an effective framework that serves both as an inspiring visual element and reminder of the book's content.

The worksheets at the end of each virtue chapter solidify the insights and learnings and offer you the opportunity to reflect on how each virtue relates to you, your values and where you currently are with life.

The use and references to proverbs and quotes show that Steve Beauchamp has both a deep respect and understanding of Japanese culture. And the author's humble personal stories/examples shows how you can practically apply the eight virtues of the samurai into your life.

A book worth reading not only for Quality & Project Management professionals, but for anyone wanting to apply samurai wisdom to both their professional and personal life to improve themselves.
