Año nuevo, vida nueva: Learn Spanish With Stories (Spanish Edition) Kindle Edition
Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva is a short story specially written for students at pre-intermediate level of Spanish (A2).
LEARN SPANISH BY READING
This book is carefully designed to help learners revise and consolidate key vocabulary and key grammar structures of the pre-intermediate level of Spanish (A2) by reading a naturally flowing text. Reading short stories like Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva is one of the most effective and pleasant ways to learn a Foreign Language. By reading, you can learn vocabulary and grammar structures in context, without memorising lists of isolated words or studying endless grammar rules.
A STORY THAT YOU WILL ACTUALLY WANT TO READ
Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva is not just a book to learn Spanish: it's also a good story. It is not always easy to create a good story with the limited vocabulary and not-too-complex grammar learners of a Foreign Language require. That is the main reason Foreign Language Graded Stories are sometimes disappointing. The stories told are just too bland, fail to capture the attention of the learners, and do not keep their motivation until the end of the book because authors are constricted to using quite a narrow range of grammar points and vocabulary topics. However, I don't think Año Nuevo, Vida Nueva will disappoint you. I believe it is an interesting story that will catch your attention from the beginning and will keep you motivated till the end. I wrote this story based on my experience living in London and teaching Spanish for 20 years. The events and the characters I describe here are only the result of my imagination, but their fears, sadness, anger, frustrations, hopes, joys, and dreams are real; they reflect some people I have met and some situations I have encountered during my teaching career in London. If you have ever dreamed of learning Spanish, you will enjoy reading this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI’m barely A1 level but I was able to understand and follow the storyline. The little vocabulary is very helpful at the end of each chapter. I would buy more books from this author to continue reading stories in modern Spanish.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2021I'm an adult learner, self-learning. I read through this book in a couple of hours, enjoying the wit and believability of the characters, and eager at the end of each short chapter to know what happens next. This exactly matched my level, and I had no trouble reading it easily, but still learning (and writing down) new words and phrases many times. The author provides highlighted "vocabulary words", and after each chapter the list of the same in that chapter, footnoted cultural terms, a summary of the chapter, and questions. I have not yet checked out the online supplementary materials, but they exist, and the author's countless instruction videos on YouTube are terrific. Both in them and in this book (and I assume others in the series), his skill at being able to say exactly what he wants to teach in language that learners can understand is remarkable. The internet has totally reshaped language-learning.
This book may be too high or too low for the level you may be at, but for me it was just right and enough to make me buy the next one immediately.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI've been reading Juan Fernández's books by increasing levels from A1 ¡Hola Lola! I find them both entertaining and useful practice, and would recommend them to any student of Spanish. This particular book features the past tenses, but I found it relatively easy reading, having read earlier book in the set.
Fernández actually published these in a different order than increasing difficulty. This is one of his earlier books, though at a higher level than some more recent ones.
This editions features chapter summaries and (easy) questions on each chapter. Unlike any of the others, It also has some cute illustrations. The story provides some insight into Hispanic New Year's customs.
But the unique thing about this particular book is the introduction, though one of the characters, of the Argentinian dialect, which has some different vocabulary and grammatical forms. I suppose it's nice to know such things exist in the language, but I find I have enough problems understanding "normal" (Castilian) Spanish without having to stumble over other variants.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have read two of his books so far and already have two more waiting. I am also taking is Repaso Total course online and it is great! I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseLove this book, the storyline, and the tale about the intersection of different cultures. The author includes some dark edges to the story which makes it more compelling and realistic. And if you like this book, the author also has a great podcast in Spanish as well (Español con Juan). Both the podcast and book are simultaneously entertaining AND great learning tools for those wanting to become more fluent in Spanish.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2023Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseReading is an important part of language learning, but it's difficult to find material at an appropriate level that is both interesting and contemporary. Too much of what is available for young adults / adults is based on arcane historical works or long descriptive pieces and you're never going to be able to use the language in any practical situation so it's hard to see why you'd want to spend time reading it.
Unlike other books, I have found Juan Fernandez's books very entertaining and are helping me improve my conversational Spanish. The words and phrases in his books are so practical that I now use them in all of my Spanish conversation meetups and also when talking to any Spanish speaker in everyday life. Finallly! Books that are useful and entertaining. I hope he writes more Upper Intermediate level books. Maybe a few sequels to this book. Also, it would be great if he had an audio component to his books.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 18, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA bit short, but I really enjoyed the story. The vocabulary used throughout the book was spot on. I currently have a B2 level in Spanish, but I decided to read it anyway. Gracias, Juan!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI didn't find the stories in this book as engaging as Hola Lola or Un Hombre Fascinante. Chapters were very brief and too much English explanations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy goin
This book is not over complicated. Each chapter is in "bite size pieces".
Having bought other books before I find that they can be over complicated, not this one. The chapters are small with a vocabulary and a resumé section and full of events to keep you interested.
It is for intermediate learners BUT someone of a beginner plus level should find this a good tool.
Very pleasantly surprised, Juan also does EXCELLENT podcasts and YouTube videos. The podcasts actually persuaded me to buy this book. I will defiantly buy more
Great

5.0 out of 5 stars Ti insegna lo spagnolo leggendo, quello che si parla in strada soprattutto.
Format: KindleVerified PurchasePer chi vuole imparare lo spagnolo leggendo un racconto divertente, fluido e semplice al tempo stesso, dove nella storia emergono simpatiche tradizioni della cultura spagnola ed argentina. Cosa fondamentale per me è che l'autore insegna lo spagnolo di strada, quello serve veramente quando ci si reca in Spagna o in America Latina!
Consigliato.
