April May Fall (Mommy Wars Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 191 ratings

April Davis totally has her life in order. Ha! Not really. Yes, she’s the Calm Mom—a social influencer with a reputation for showing moms how to stay calm and collected through yoga—but behind the scenes, she’s barely holding it all together. Raising tiny humans alone is exhausting, but that’s just the chewed-up cherry on the melted sundae of her life. Her kids aren’t behaving, her husband left her for his skydiving instructor, and her top knot proves she hasn’t showered in days.

Then a live video of the “always calm” April goes viral...and she’s most definitely
not. Enter Jack Gibson, April’s contact at the media conglomerate that has purchased April’s brand. The too-sexy-for-his-own-good Jack will help clean up April’s viral mess, and even work with her to expand her influence, but toddler tea parties and a dog with a penchant for peeing on his shoes were definitely not part of the deal.

Now April’s calm has jumped ship quicker than her kids running from their vegetables. Not to mention, the sparks flying between her and Jack have her completely out of her depth. Forget finding her calm—April’s going to need a boatload of margaritas just to find her way back to herself again.

Review

"I love this series by Christina Hovland! The Mommy Wars series are not only relatable and hilarious but they are deliciously steamy as well!" -Laura's Next Chapter

"
Christina Hovland has a way of infusing charm and real talk into these stories. As a mom, I appreciated how she highlighted the perfect imperfection of motherhood. The big heart, and the shattered nerves, and the big messy love of it all." -Bookgasms

"April May Fall has a mixture of all things that make a delightful read.
Humor and wit, crazy and somewhat annoying girlfriends that go out on a limb for you (even if some of it is very far-fetched), hella hot Jack, hot sexy times, and a sweet ending. Overall April May Fall offers a realistic and witty look at single mom life with the sweet Jack treat on top! See what I did there?" -A Midlife Wife

"This book was
such a fun read that also tackled divorce, friendship, and calm." -Hey Anci

"
When you take life after kids and divorce, add a possible career ending viral video, sprinkle in a very sexy career recovery fairy godfather and surround them a cast of delightful friends... you get this book." -Happily Ever Afters Only

"Hands down, the best part of April May Fall is the brutally honest depiction of mom life. As the mom to toddler, I found myself nodding and laughing so much while reading this book, especially at the appropriately included quotes at the beginning of each chapter.
April is a great lead, and she just keeps pushing along as the hits keep coming (and there are a lot of hits)." -Marsupial Literature

"I highly recommend this book and
loved every second of it!" -So I Read Romance

"
I am loving all of the characters in this series! The way each one is a bit relatable in their own way hooks me every time." -Bookish Kayy

"I found exactly what I needed in April May Fall. It was
honest, funny, and filled with love. I loved that April's character wasn't your picture-perfect mom, that she was quirky and had her moments." -Eryn E Reads

"
I don't think I have laughed out loud so much at a book while at the same time - felt so emotionally connected to the characters." -This Book, That Life

"April May Fall is
a fun and sweet contemporary romance, and though it is part of a series, it can totally be read as a standalone. I think romance readers that are looking for a light and charming read with some great messages will enjoy this one!" -One Book More

"This was just what I needed. It was super cute and kept me interested and wanting to find out what happened next the whole way through. I deff recommend" -I'm Booked

"I LOVED this book!
April was such a beautifully flawed and realistic character and I really enjoyed reading this book." -The OG Bookworm

"I recommend this book to anyone that loves
a cute romance story with the involvement of very realistic problems. I will be buying this book when it's released in paperback." -G Toes Girl

"My favorite in the series!
I read all three of the Mommy Wars books back-to-back and this is one of my new favorite romance series. The group of friends just makes me so happy and the kid stuff is always so realistic and hilarious. Can't wait for book 4!" -Mindful Librarian

"This was
a really funny rom-com, I couldn't put down, in fact I read it in one sitting." -Mrs. Tosh

Fun romance with a bit of steam

Fun romance with a bit of steam
I enjoyed this book so much! April is so relatable and hilarious and Jack so sweet and patient. I adored his interactions with her kids and I thought the kids were especially well-written. There are a few open door steamy scenes that may or may not convince you to give yoga a chance, and I may or may not be heading back to class tomorrow. I didn't realize this was the third book in a series because it works so well as a standalone, but I enjoyed it so much that I need to go back and read the first two books. If you're looking for a fun romance with a bit of steam this is the book for you!

Christina Hovland can’t write enough of these hilarious and entertaining stories to satisfy my need. Even reading the story more than once you are still laughing out loud at wonderful antics of the characters. April is one of the single mothers who is going through a hard time. Her divorce has devastated her and the children and she needs to get her mojo back. Jack is perpetually single and technically the her boss and the guy tasked with getting April back on track. There are countless tidbits to be discovered within pages such as the significance of the word “banana”. You will also want to discover why Kitty is dating Beast. Each book in this series is a delight for the senses with characters that are unforgettable and a wonderful happy ending. 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️🧘‍♀️

    Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’m intrigued with Christina Hovland. Each writer has a fingerprint in the writing world, a voice that is their own. Rom-com writers especially tend to have a type of quirk that intrigues their readers. This is Christina Hovland. I first discovered it in her Rachel, Out of Office, and I found myself drawn to it. In her newest story, April May Fall, there is definitely more of this unique voice. Page after page, you find quirky auxiliary characters, a hero who needs a heroine to make his life messy, and a heroine who needs him to help her blossom again. It makes for a story that tugs at your heartstrings, while also making you laugh at the decidedly crazy antics of its characters.

April May Fall is a story about a woman who has lost her sense of self after a devastating divorce. With an ex-husband who has “checked out” of his former life, the “Calm Mom” no longer has her chill. She’s struggling to raise her three children while growing her influencer brand, the Calm Mom. Unfortunately, the cracks show, and she finds herself in an embarrassing situation. Her management, namely Jack, the brother of Rachel from Hovland’s first book, steps in to assist her in “finding herself” again while protecting her brand. He helps her breathe again, he helps her remember her inner strength, and he watches her bloom again, while also falling in love with her and her three children. The man who likes a structured, buttoned-up life, realizes that life is better when it feels lived in. And he finds a new home in April over the course of Hovland’s story.

What I loved the best about this story isn’t Jack’s guidance. It would be reductive to think he is the only impetus for helping April remember what makes her her. Instead, Jack simply listens and reminds her of who she was before. Even more, Hovland has creatively written a cavalcade of women who also inject support and love into April’s life. From her crazy, out-of-control neighbor, Kitty who acts as a matchmaker to April’s next-door neighbors, Simone and Yelena, to Jack’s sister and April’s friend, Rachel, each woman provides April with something she needs to help her find herself again. When these women are together in the story, it feels both out of control and supportive, and the community of women is honestly my favorite part of April May Fall.

Ultimately, though, it’s the interrogation of motherhood and womanhood that makes this story special. We live in a world where mothers are supposed to “act” a certain way, and there is so much judgment in mommy communities. April has a great monologue at the end of this story that speaks the truth as it relates to the roles of women and motherhood, and this is the piece de resistance of the book.

If I’d have any criticism of the book, it would be the comedy aspects of it. At times, the funny feels forced, and the “jokes” of the story don’t always land as I imagine Christina Hovland expects them to. However, that seems minute in contrast to the bigger lessons of April May Fall. As Jack struggles to accept a different life for himself than was his initial plan, he accepts that he just has to “fall,” fall into love with April, fall into a different plan for his life. And it’s a great reminder for readers who might be curious about Christina Hovland’s April May Fall to simply fall into the chemistry and quirkiness of her newest story.

Totally love, love this book! Stayed up all night to finish it and Mrs. Hovland...you've done it again! I literally laughed out loud at all the situations you put April and Jack into. The first two books in this series are amazing and this is another to add to the awesomeness that is The Mommy Wars series. I highly recommend this series but read them in order since many of the previous characters will be in play.

When the new rage in the mom community, April, has her Calm Mom harshed by her life going to pieces, Jack is sent in to pick up the pieces and put Calm Mom brand back up at the top. In the wild wasteland of domesticity unlooked for love starts to take root. Blending humor, everyday life struggles and romance is something Christina Hovland excels at and I was tickled to finally pick up one of her standalone Mommy Wars romcoms.

April May Fall begins with average mom and wife, April, finding herself a discovered commodity when her attempt to find a way to hold it together through her calming techniques gets snatched up as Calm Mom brand. Little does her sponsor know that she is barely holding it together when her husband divorces her because he's fallen for another woman and her kids are acting out as a result. Holding on by her fingernails only lasts until a video of her looking the opposite of calm gets released.

Enter Jack, the company's fixer, stage right. Jack exudes calm as he must set April's world back to rights including that of her children. This is a role he never saw himself in and the early days are rough- and pretty hilarious. Meanwhile, Jack's charm works on them all and that might include a little thing called attraction and then love. How could this possible work out? It takes the help of April's quirky friends, a pair of kids, and more.

I tend to hold my breath when I jump into a new series by an author after really loving a previous one. Will the author's signature writing style and way of writing a story still be there? And, will it be fun and flirty in this case? I was relieved of this worry right at the get go. I was cracking up over April's mom world disaster and ignorant Jack arriving into this. Moms can nod their heads because yeah, life just isn't a sixties' sitcom with a mom like Harriet or June Cleaver. Divorce can rampage through a family and recovery isn't easy or clean.

Jack was a real charmer and it was fun and adorable to see him wading in and particularly with April's boy and girl. Jack was a special guy for April, but also for her family. He keeps his cool and just needed to get on board with this surprise twist life and love threw at him.

April's friends, and especially vivacious Kitty were over the top and added the dazzle. When April and Jack were messing up, it was the friends to the rescue. I haven't read the books before, but I'm guessing these gals had or will have their own romances in store.

It was a quick and light romcom and just what I was hoping for. It had some tender and spicy romance times, some funny moments, and touched on deeper matters without deep diving. I would recommend it to those looking for an entertaining and quick-moving read.

Good read but not up to the standard of her previous books. Kitty was a non filtered hoot who just caused chaos wherever she went, sadly the book wasn’t about her. April I struggled to get my head round and didn’t really take to her till the last quarter of the book. Good read but with reservations.
