The term archaeology derives from the two Greek words archaios (“ancient”) and logos (“knowledge”). In its modern sense, it has come to mean the study of the material remains of the past and is generally restricted to the study of artifacts dating up to the end of the Middle Ages. Archaeology began as a treasure hunt. In the 1920s, archaeology was all about digging. Digging is still a major part of archaeology. Today archaeologists study every clue to the past to piece together the history of civilization. Even a garbage pit can help to reveal how people lived. Archaeology is partially about objects but mostly about people. The excitement of archaeology lies in building up a picture of human life thousands of years ago, by making connections between objects found in the ground and the people who left them there long ago. Day by day archaeologists bring to light more of the past. By excavating the things ancient people made and used, they piece together a picture of life in ancient times. Since every fragment that is excavated adds to this picture, a piece of broken pottery can be just as important as gold. For example, finding a treasure in a 5.000-year-old tomb is exciting. Even more exciting is understanding why people put such a treasure there in the first place. Both the beauty of the things that are found and the clues they give about the past are great pleasures for an archaeologist. This book introduces you to some of the most impressive and exciting archaeological discoveries that have been made since the 1800s when the study of archaeology began. From Aboriginal rock art to the 10.000-year-old Shigir Idol, from the Göbekli Tepe to the Nazca Lines, the world’s 100 greatest discoveries are in this book. While preparing the book, we took the utmost care to use a simple narrative that anyone interested in archaeology can understand. Our aim was to create a book that would appeal to everyone, not only for professional archaeologists but also for children and adults who have an interest in archaeology and art. We hope that this book will give you new insights into the fascinating world of the past.

This book is poorly written. Beyond the typos and repeated phrases, it fails at its stated goal of being accessible to all ages. Some lines read like a children's book, whilst others use undefined (often multisyllable) technical terms usually found in Archaeology textbooks and articles.

I don’t know about the written version but in the Kindle version, the grammar and spelling brought down the quality of the book. It’s free with unlimited so You could enjoy the wonderful photos without pain.

It’s a gift. And, I know the recipient will enjoy each and every discovery.

Odd syntax and phrasing suggest translation from another language. Author’s comments are almost childish at times. Some entries include relatively in-depth descriptions while others are quite terse. Names and terminology are inconsistently defined.
Granted, the scope of the book is large and one could argue that different discoveries might be more worthy for inclusion.
All in all, it may spark curiosity and further reading.

This book is very uneven with good information and some good photographs of ancient objects, but the editing is truly lacking - it would have been much better with more cohesive editing, some of the essays are better written / edited than others, some would have been embarrassing in a high school essay I’m afraid.

Still worth the read if you enjoy ancient history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book

Great book for small money. Good selection of sites, high scientific standard of text, but understandably written. Paper quality could be better, but for paperback ok. Nice present for Christmas. I can really recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice content, but unfortunately the book is printed in very poor quality
Reviewed in Italy on December 14, 2021
The book is printed in very poor quality. Partly there are pixelated pages or pages with color defects. It does not correspond to the description and expectation. The content is very interesting. There are a few grammar errors and layout errors as well. Unfortunately I had to send it back.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Reviewed in Canada on December 17, 2021
Grammar and sentence structure is atrocious. Poor editing of the book as if it was a rush job. Contradictory statements about the objects being described. The finds themselves are fascinating but the explanations leave the reader with more questions

1.0 out of 5 stars Superficiale e stampato su carta economica
Reviewed in Italy on December 3, 2021
