A Rival's Kiss (Fulton U Rivals) Kindle Edition
Walking away would be the smartest decision, but no one’s ever accused me of being smart. Cold, determined, brutal, but never smart.
Willa’s mine from the moment I rescue her. I protect her from a brawling crowd and she stares up at me like I’m her prince charming. No one’s ever looked at me like that. No one has ever dared to come that close.
I didn’t know she was the little sister of one of my biggest rivals. Her brother and I have both drawn blood on the field, dislocated joints, broken bones, but I’ll never want to show her that side of me.
I long to be the man she believes I am, but there’s only one way I know how to win—how to survive—and that’s ensuring my enemies lose.
Once he finds out who his sister has been dating it’ll be all-out war, and I might lose the only woman who’s ever looked at me like I’m not built only for destruction.
Changing my ways won’t be easy, but I’m willing to risk it all for her.

About the author

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.
I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2022Ezra Johanssen. This boy is an enigma wrapped in secrets, secured behind an impenetrable wall. And hold on to your hearts, ladies, because Ezra is a heartbreaker and you’re going to need to keep the tissues close by.
Willa Goodwin has grown up in a loving family, with parents who dote on her and an over-protective older brother who is also a Fulton U football player. When a gentle giant rescues her from an out-of-control crowd at a football game, they instantly click. It doesn’t matter that he plays for St. Francis U, their team’s biggest rival, but rather, how he makes her feel.
Ezra has had me intrigued since the first book. He's the strong, silent type, watching out for his friends and keeping the parties from getting too crazy. But those deep waters are anything but still, and the more I learned, the more I loved him. It wasn’t quite utter ruination and complete destruction of my heart, but I certainly came away with several Ezra-shaped bumps and bruises to it.
Willa is so wonderful, kind and good-hearted. Maybe a little too kind, because if my brother behaved the way Walsh did towards Ezra, said brother would be on indefinite time-out until he could behave appropriately. But Willa is more kind than me, and she's exactly what Ezra needs.
I got a kick out of the football rivalry, having grown up in a state that has a beef with an entire other state in the name of this college sport. And while Ezra and Willa's journey to forever is challenging, to say the least, I loved seeing the commitment, healing and forgiveness that happened along the way.
It might be helpful to point out that the timeline of these stories is concurrent, rather than sequential, so there will be some familiar events. I love all the guys of S T F U (and Fulton U, but shhh, don’t tell Ezra and his buddies) but this story is especially amazing. I loved the crossover between the two schools, but I loved Ezra and Willa even more. Charming, humorous, touching, and heartfelt, this fabulous YA/NA romance is one of my favorites and one you definitely won’t want to miss!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022Always two sides to every person. Ezra, the abandoned young boy that made it through foster care is very guarded and tries his best to leave the anger on the field. He’s also caring and protective from the moment he saves Willa at a football game. Willa has been living in her deceased sisters shadow for as long as she remembers and while Ezra protects her he doesn’t treat her like glass. Emotional well written storyline with some college angst and drama and some steam with a HEA
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2022A Rival’s Kiss was another wonderfully emotional and character driven story by Maya Hughes. This story was one part angst, one part steam, and one part pure feeling. It’s my favorite of the Fulton U Rivals series so far.
“He watched me with his unfiltered intensity. An intensity bringing me new awareness of every part of me. Every blink, every breath, every beat of my heart.”
Willa is a ball of pure sunshine and heart. She has a loving family that is a bit too overprotective due to a tragic incident in the past. Willa yearns for independence while also wanting to make sure her family doesn’t worry. She falls quickly for Ezra and sees through his defenses. She’s a calming force to him and she fights for both him and herself. She’s amazing.
“When the fibers of my soul ignited and charred, she was there to keep me from disintegrating.”
What can I say about Ezra? He broke my heart and I absolutely loved him. His past has broken him yet he’s still one of the kindest, gentlest and genuine individuals. He hides from the world because it’s easier for him that way and he’s reluctant to get to close to anyone, but Willa won’t let him hide. She opens up a whole new world for him and shows him that he is worth fighting for. Even when he wants to give up on himself, she won’t let him.
“Rejection and I had been sewn together for as long as I could remember. But I had to push past it. The glimpses of the sun I’d experienced when I was with her were worth it.”
Willa and Ezra come from two very different worlds, but somehow together they make sense. She’s the light to his dark and he helps her get the courage to confront change. They connect almost immediately in an emotional sense. Their conversations flow naturally and their chemistry is electric. I loved how they both supported each other and showed up for one another. These two are everything together!!
A Rival’s Kiss is a fantastic addition to this series. Maya Hughes seamlessly weaves the timelines together of all the books in this series plus the Fulton U series and it was brilliant. I was thinking about this book long after I put it down and that’s a mark of a fantastic story. Now I can’t wait for the next book in this amazing series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved every word of this book! 💖
Ahhhh! I read this entire story in one sitting, that’s how excited I was to dive into this fabulous new Fulton U Rivals novel by the incredible Maya Hughes. I seriously couldn’t put it down!
The dynamic between main characters, Ezra and Willa, leaves you wanting more after (and during) every chapter. 😩💕 This angsty, passionate, and incredibly emotionally charged romance, was truly breathtaking. The obstacles the two characters faced along the way just made their happy ending all the sweeter, not to mention the fact that they came out all the more strengthened and bonded because of them.
Maya is and always will be a must read author for me, and this book is a perfect example of why that is. She depicted a perfect balance of strengths and vulnerabilities in these characters, giving them real life emotions, pains, heartaches and struggles. A truly fantastic job of making these characters come alive on the page. Plus, the chemistry between Ezra and Willa was present from the first moment these two main characters shared a page! Such a brilliant combination!
This entire novel was written with such deep tones and emotions embedded into every scene but all the ache that accompanies the story leads to an incredible ending that really leaves the reader wanting more. I only just finished the book and I’m already missing it! 😩🥰 Although, I’ll be honest, any book Maya writes will automatically be absolutely phenomenal in my mind!
Like I said before, I more than enjoyed every word of this book and couldn’t put this story down from the second I received it. It has absolutely lived up to the utter perfection that usually encompasses all of this author’s other work! Absolute perfection! 👌🏻❤️
Long story short, Maya Hughes (once again) did such a fantastic job and I cannot wait for my physical copy of “A Rival’s Kiss” to arrive in the mail! I absolutely need to have this masterpiece physically reside on my beloved bookshelf.
This book is absolutely going down as one of my top reads of 2022!
Love, love, love this book, and love, love, love this author! “A Rival’s Kiss” gets five very well deserved stars from me! (No surprise! 😂💖 Lol) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ezra & Willa
Willa, is smiles and sunshine. She wants to experience life, make her own decisions and make her own mistakes. But having over bearing, protective parents, her older brother included. She doesn't want to rock the boat.
When she's in rival territory, at a football game with her best friend, Maggie. She's never felt freer. No parents or brother breathing down her neck. When a boy saves her from a brawl in the stands, they strike up a conversation and maybe a bit of a connection.
Ezra, is a private guy. Keeps his guard up all the time. Being bounced around the system since he was little, he can't remember if his mother got seperated from him, or she lost sight of him. Ezra hides, blends into the background. He's never felt that he belongs anywhere. No one watches his games, no one's there for him. The closest thing he has to family is football and his housemates/teammates.
He literally saves this girl who lands on top of him when a brawl breaks out in the stands. He can't believe this girl, the way she fusses over him, when they realise he's hurt too. He's never had anyone act this way over him.
With the going to different schools, they meet up, make things work. Even though Willa is a rival team players sister.
With determination Willa transfers closer to her best friend, Maggie which is also closer to Ezra.
Ezra doesn't think he deserves Willa. Keeping her at arms length, he's protecting her from his troubled side. She calms him. He let's his guard down around her.
Willa loves him, she wants to help him.
Will they tackle the hurdles that come their way?
Will being opposites work in their favour?
My heart broke for Ezra, for what he's been through. Thinking that he only had himself to count on, also thinking that no one was there for him. He was surviving, not living... Until Willa
Such an emotional read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Good One!
I really enjoyed the story of Willa and Ezra. It was definitely a strong and emotional read for me. The character development was really good. And my heart broke for the both of them quite a few times. I wish there was a bit more build up, but this was still good in a lot of ways.
