Artificial Bodies: How Machines Replace People Paperback – July 20, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
Tech bosses are invading institutions, replacing workers with "artificial intelligence".
Musk plugs in propaganda bots; Schmidt plugs in killer robots. But aging bosses are replaceable too. Once worn out, they are swapped out for a new boss, or for the machines they directed geeks to build.
Tech is ruining our humanity. We are treated as expendable, as parts to be replaced by more efficient parts. We can blame our boss for firing us, or warn of a machine takeover. But that won't stop what we created.
This book is for anyone who cares to see the underlying problem: artificial bodies.
This document makes some incredibly important points about the current situation with AI. I would highly recommend it!

It is totally wonderful art… research art.

Reading through, I understood the dire consequences from not putting checks and balances on this soon enough.

About the author

Remmelt leads a program to prevent dangerous AI. Researchers trained there left to OpenAI and DeepMind to work on safety. Both labs build huge inscrutable systems, claiming they can control even autonomous AI to stay safe. But can they?
To find out, Remmelt asked the lead engineer behind the Pentagon's system for searching classified documents. Shockingly, the engineer explained why sufficient control is impossible. They joined up with an Oxford researcher to put the logic into maths, as well as professor Yampolskiy, who compiled many more academic results on control limits.
The conclusion is dire:
If AI ever gains full autonomy, then that system cannot even control itself enough to not destroy society.
Remmelt now helps communities to stop AI corporations doing more harm. He backs their projects at the program AI Safety Camp. Remmelt advised The Authors Guild on suing corporations for training AI on copies of copyrighted books. He is Executive Producer of a new horror documentary directed by an Academy Award-winning filmmaker.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2024This read was an eye opener for companies investing so much into the AI and lack basic humanity. It thoroughly explains the potential future that we may be looking at if proper laws aren’t put into place and proper foresight isn’t taken into consideration. Please give it a read, it’ll be worth the time and attention.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2024My day-job involves responsible AI and my interests lie in speculative fiction, so this was an obvious choice to read.
*** What to Expect
A pamphlet-style work that's hard to classify, blurring the lines between present reality and dystopian science fiction. The author examines some of the (very real, unfortunately) risks around present day Artificial Intelligence and BigTech (FAANG) approaches, but then continues painting a path into a Skynet-like world, where machines have taken over the planet.
*** What I liked
I like the topic, and AI Safety should be on everyone's mind. You are most likely hearing two voices these days: AI is the panacea that will solve all problems, and AI is the doom of mankind. This work belongs in the second camp, and while reality lies in the middle some of the risks presented are real (abuse and misuse of the technology by attempting to replace human knowledge, the environmental impact of building AI, and the unethical practices of some of the leading vendors).
At the end, the author presents how we could avoid those risks (both the present and the potential), by building appropriate guardrails and pushing back.
*** What to be aware of
This is a really short work, and written like a political treatise rather than a story. And yet, the majority of it can be classified as fiction. It presents a path for the 'rise of the machines,' but I wouldn't classify it as a plausible path.
*** Summary
What I find unfortunate, is that the alarmist viewpoint detracts from the real risks. It will be too easy for those advocating in favour of AI to dismiss everything -- including the sensible guardrails.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in artificial intelligence and has enjoyed the original Terminator movies.
