In this book, David Gray-Hammond takes us on a journey through the landscape of being Autistic and Psychotic. Using both personal and professional experience, he interweaves academic literature with personal anecdotes, giving context to the loosely studied area of psychosis in Autistic people.

David highlights the impact of the lack of understanding, as well as discussing how one might help an Autistic person experiencing psychosis. Further to this, he considers how we might redefine the role of psychiatry in the lives of Autistic people and how we might address the social issues that contribute to psychosis.

This is a well-written book about a topic that warrants much greater reflection and research. Mental illnesses (to use the old, outdated term) have been present for the entirety of my life, in myself and close family members across generations. As I dive deeper into the subjects, I move farther and farther away from the old pathologized model. This book addresses the subject of autism, psychosis, and other diagnostic conditions elegantly and quite thoroughly. I sincerely hope that the greater dialog on these matters will evolve along the lines set forth in this book. This is definitely a forward-looking, experience-based book that I found valuable and encouraging.

I love the wording. It's very interesting to me and I 100% recommend this book.

I just want to make one quick note If you ask for a refund I will haunt you.

Not maliciously but I will play with your electricity 100%. Just saying.

David’s lived experience and discussion from up-to-date sources makes vital points that the mental health professionals need to listen to and act upon. My experiences in New Zealand totally support all of the points he makes. More research and training in these areas need to be done urgently to give much improved mental health care for the AuDHD community. Their shocking suicide rates are a cry for action. At present we are still training NZ psychologists with very little understanding of this neurodivergence let alone how to identify and treat AuDHD burnout. Many currently in the field lack the expertise. They need to listen to their autistic patients’ needs. A big thanks to David for taking this step and giving a voice to those who experience psychosis and are autistic. It is an important step. I would love to see this sent to every English speaking mental health clinic!
