A Witch to Change the World (The Witch Wars Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 70 ratings

What happens when the most powerful witch of today meets the most powerful witch of 1502? Passions ignite, secrets are revealed, and the world will never be the same.

Adam Parrish is a modern-day witch. A pediatric oncologist by day and a hunter of evil witches by night, he’s conflicted by his two callings. Saving the world all on his own is not what it’s cracked up to be, and it’s hell on a social life, but what choice does he have?

Vivienne Lanier is a witch and a midwife in 1502. When she touches an illuminated manuscript, she's thrown through time to its present-day location at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. She has to find her way back home to care for her granddaughter who needs her, but the 21st century is full of surprises, and none is more interesting than Dr. Adam Parrish. Has she finally met her soulmate only to lose him to her duty?

When other witches discover Vivienne’s otherworldly power and her ability to heal anyone of anything, Adam realizes the danger she faces. Can he protect her and keep the secret of her time travel?

When equals fall in love, can they bridge a five-hundred-year gap to live their happily ever after?

Content Notes:
This book is a slow burn romance that features open-door, consensual sex scenes between mature characters. There is a discussion about a rape that happened in the past and a subplot involves children in a hospital and doctors dealing with cancer treatments for children. Explicit language is used. And now, possibly the weirdest trigger warning of all time: The male main character has a liberal point of view. (I know it's crazy! But these are crazy times we live in! Just trying to keep it real and make sure nobody gets traumatized.)

What can I say about Suzanne Snowden? She memorizes poetry for fun and will torture her grown children by reciting it aloud whenever a situation even remotely calls for it. One of her favorite things to do is summarize the plot of a monster romance to her grown son. (For his reactions.) Suzanne likes to sit on the couch and read with her dog in her lap and her husband by her side. She is wearing earplugs in this scene, because she does not want to hear the reality show about the cars or the animal patrol officers or the crabs. One of Suzanne's favorite things to do in the world is to hang out with her grown-up daughter and get iced coffees and talk about books. Suzanne likes her job at the library and tries every day to have some fun with her work bestie, Taylor. Suzanne's work history looks like this: First job- ticket seller at mall theaters. Fired for not knowing what the hell she was doing. Other high school and college jobs- she remembers a lot of pizza delivery. First career- radio announcer for many FM radio stations. She is mainly known for a Love Songs radio show, but she also did the news and other radio formats. Second career- she became a teacher of radio communications and taught high schoolers. Third career- Suzanne went to work at the library, the job that was meant for her. Oh, and now she writes spicy romance books featuring mature characters! The most fun of all!

This was my favorite read of 2024 because of the magic! If you enjoyed A Discovery of Witches or The Last Witch Hunter this mature, well thought out story won't disappoint. I gave this book points for: great world-building, believable magic system, and well-handled intimacy. I love that the female protagonist is so much more powerful than anyone else in the book and the male MC respects her for it. But there's still a fun touch-her-and-I'll-unalive-you vibe. It is a slow burn, but the spicy times are worth the wait. Looking forward to the next book in this satisfying series.

Suzanne did an amazing job building Adam and Viviennes relationship before the “sexy time” started. The story is built around a witch from 1502 and a witch from 2024 and her integration into the modern world. The story line has a villain, a love story, and twists around each corner. The book has both main characters point of view so you are getting both perspectives. The sex scenes are tastefully filthy. :). Erotic in a way where you can “feel” the emotion and the way they touch each other but sensibly written where you don’t feel the need to bleach your eyeballs. Now that I’ve finished the book I may need to pretend my husband is a Children’s Oncologist. I can’t wait for book 2!

Wow! I ordered this and my husband read first, then my adult daughter took it and it has FINALLY made it back to my hands. Both readers raved about the story and I am excited to read so we can discuss.
