A Worthy Woman (The Montford Cousins Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 168 ratings

Nicholas Montford is tired of the London Season, tired of the marriage mart, and most of all, he is tired of encountering a certain duchess from his past. The Hatton viscountcy has an estate in Ireland, a place his father wrote fondly of in his journal. By journeying to Ireland, Nicholas could escape the duchess he once loved as well as see to a property that a Montford has not visited since he was a boy. Despite his grandfather’s objections, he departs for County Antrim, eager to seek solace, but when he first espies a cloaked figure on horseback galloping across his lands as though fleeing for his life, Nicholas’s wishes seem for naught. He gives chase to the trespasser, but when a fiery redhead with a glare to match her locks emerges from the cape, he finds himself in a predicament he never imagined possible.

Lady Fiona Fitzgerald has no need of a gentleman to wed—not even the handsome viscount who just arrived at Montford, the neighbouring estate. As the Earl of Kildare’s only child and heir, she plans to live forever at Larchfield as a spinster. After all, her father raised her as he would a son: she rides astride, shoots with the men, and never reads romances, so why do as expected and marry a man? Why would she make herself subject to a gentleman’s whims? But what is she to do about Viscount Hatton? He has come to her rescue more than once, challenges her at every turn, and frustrates her to no end. He also stirs her like no other she has ever met. When her father poses an ultimatum, the irritating gentleman could be the answer, but can she entrust Viscount Hatton with her dilemma? By doing so, she might have to leave all she has known and cherished behind, but by taking such a huge risk, will she find something even greater—will she find love?

L. L. Diamond is more commonly known as Leslie to her friends, and Mom to her three kids. A native of Louisiana, she has followed her Air Force husband to duty stations including: Louisiana, Mississippi, California, Texas, New Mexico, Nebraska, England, Missouri, and Maryland.

Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. As an artist, her concentration is in graphic design, but watercolor is her medium of choice with one of her watercolors featured on the cover of her second book, A Matter of Chance. She has multiple certifications in fitness and coaching swimming. When she’s not writing, she is Head Age Group coach of her swim team. She also plays flute and piano, but much like Elizabeth Bennet, she is always in need of practice!

Borrowed KU: I volunteered to leave a review of my thoughts and opinions. I have adored Nicholas Montford since he was introduced in the series. This is a group of cousins you want to meet and be included in their fun. It is a loving family, unlike where Jane and Elizabeth came from. The grandfather and grandmother had lost their children and were seeing to the wellbeing of their grandchildren. Each book in the series feathers the HEA of each of the cousins. This was a quick read and fairly predictable. I was rushing to get to Jane’s story that follows this one. Note: I confess to reading Book 4 first. I’m glad I did because Fiona was featured in that book and I liked her. It made reading her story more pleasurable than if I had read them in order.

This is book 3 in the Montford Cousins series. I LOVED IT.
Book 1: An Endeavour to be Worthy [Elizabeth Montford & Fitzwilliam Darcy]
Book 2: A Gentleman of Worth [Lady Amelia Montford & Sir Anthony Green]
Book 3: A Worthy Woman [Nicholas Montford & Lady Fiona Fitzgerald]
Book 4: Worthy of her Love [Jane finds her HEA]
Book 5: To Be Announced [Georgiana’s story as an unofficially adopted Montford cousin]

I love Ms Diamond’s books and this trilogy is no exception. I understand from her website she plans a book on Jane and I eagerly await its publication.
Ms Diamond always does a stellar job on fleshing out her characters and making you care about them. I don’t really have any complaints but I was wondering as I read the book how the inheritances would go. Does the first son inherit both Earldoms? Wouldn’t that take a voice away from the House of Lords? Or, if they have a daughter first does she inherit the Irish Earldom? Dumb, I know, but I got caught up in the story and wanted to know how it would work.
Great job, looking forward to the fourth book. I think I’ll reread Unwavering Trust in the meantime.

In the best possible way this fiery couple deserved each other. We knew it from the beginning but it took them, Nicholas and Fiona, a little more time. Not very long!! This book sizzles with their attraction and their attempts at not being attracted.

What a story. I loved the unconventional heroine Fiona. And Nicholas. Throughout this series so far we’ve seen him teasing, mischievous and threatening mayhem to his cousin’s suitor if he mistreated her. And supportive. Ultimately worthy as a gentleman with the knowledge of his eventual duties as an Earl in the future. As a Hero and main character in this story he was everything. Oh my gosh.

You’ve got to read this to ‘get’ the beautiful heroine. Her situation felt real and natural due to her upbringing. I could sympathize with her attitude about marriage and her fight to stay independent, but Dad decided to force the issue that they had long disagreed about. But all of her best qualities held the community at bay regarding her. I loved that Nicholas appreciated those qualities from the beginning and came to her defense. He found his worthy woman. An unconventional courtship ensues, and why not considering the two characters. We’ve known Nicholas for two books so far and part of me feared he would get hurt if Fiona couldn’t let go of her fears.

Highly recommended. I can’t wait for the next book.

I liked the first two books in the series, but I thought this was just a standard (and boring) bodice ripper. Very cliched, including the fiery red-headed heroine.

One of the baddies is the Duchess of Clarence, but the Clarence title is a royal title. Also, in the first book, Nicholas was 15 when his parents did, but in this book he was 5.

Oh, but how I wish Ms Diamond would have continued this story further with Nicholas and Fiona’s love story. It ended too quickly for my liking. Setting is in Ireland where Nicholas meets with a huge tree branch that feisty Fiona thrust in his path as both were horseback….him chasing her as he thought her a trespasser on his grandfather’s lands. From there we watch the dance they do avoiding and fighting each other to a path of no return. This is another MUST READ in this trilogy of books. I have loved every minute of reading this trilogy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Three - Great Series
Reviewed in Canada on October 19, 2023
Have you been been anticipating Book 3 of The Montford Cousins series featuring Viscount Hatton’s (Nicholas) story as much as I? If so, you won’t be disappointed. A vague hint of a past love interest who had married another was mentioned in book two, but details had to wait for this latest volume.

Running from his past, Nicholas flees to Ireland to spend time at the estate he has inherited. Approaching the property, he has a most surprising encounter with the fiery Lady Fiona, a woman that the reader soon learns can give Elizabeth Bennet a run for her money when it comes to her impertinence and headstrong nature. I refuse to spoil the details of this encounter. Raised by her father and without a mother, she is everything that a lady of the ton is not, yet still a lady. She has also sworn she will never marry—until her father decides to arrange a marriage for her to an old Irish earl, which forces her to take matters into her own hands and propose marriage to someone of her own choosing. Any guesses?

In addition to these two main characters, we meet new and likable ones in Ireland—Fiona’s father and Nicolas’s devoted staff. The plot of this mature and passionate romance is brilliantly paced, beginning in London with Nicholas’s encounter with his former lover, then taking him to Ireland where he discovers his true love. There’s a touch of angst and drama when Nicholas rises to defend Fiona’s honour after she is insulted by a cad. Finally, the story circles back to England for a reunion with his family and a final confrontation with his former lover.

One of the things I love most about this series is the Montford family bond, so dearly expressed in all three books. The love and support among all of them is truly heartwarming and entertaining as well. Their personalities really shine. I love these characters so much. Book four will feature Jane (Bennet) Montford. I simply cannot wait!

I highly recommend this book and the entire series.

    Contains scenes with adult content.

Another great book in this stand alone series! Rebecca is definitely a piece of work and deserves to get her comeuppance. I love the meeting between Nicholas and the person he sees riding on his lands 🥰. He seems to really enjoy his time in Ireland and his family are surprised when he returns 😉. Most definitely recommended. Can’t wait for book 4 🥰🥰
