Josh Cuny is a fan of horror and an author. Born in raised in Indiana, Josh became a huge fan of horror movies at a young age being first introduced to the genre through the old Universal monster movies. “Any good horror story forces us to confront our own fear and insecurities that we deal with in everyday life. The villain is merely a metaphor that represents those fears and insecurities. Through the protagonist of the story, we go on a journey to conquer those things that ail us.”

Now residing in Texas, Josh would eventually make his contribution to the genre by writing and self-publishing his first book, Hangman of Darkness, in November of 2023, which is a horror western novella that combines elements of the slasher genre, the supernatural and folklore into a character driven story which mostly takes place in post-Civil War Texas.

Josh believes in character driven stories where the reader can connect on some level with the protagonist(s). “In horror as the antagonist is important to develop, having protagonists that the reader can relate to and emphasize with is equally if not even more important. When those characters are in danger or in peril, that’s where the horror is.” His stories will sometimes contain some social commentary that is designed to make the reader to examine the world we live in through the characters’ own experiences.

The author is willing to delve into all sub- genres of horror. In the fall of 2024, he contributed a short story titled, It’s Too Late, to the horror anthology, Beautifully Bloody Anthology Volume One. His story is a psychological horror story which deals with sorrow and loss, which drivees the point of view character into a decent into self-destruction.

Also, in the fall of 2024, Josh combines elements of the classic vampire tale with the taboos of erotic fiction by writing The Tales of Castle Vasile, which are seven interconnecting tales that tell a much larger overarching story.

When their parents are murdered by a spectral hangman, a young brother and sister set up on a path of revenge. I zipped right through this novella and found the conclusion most satisfying.

This Horror Western pays homage to genre-blending classics from CURSE OF THE UNDEAD to RAVENOUS and BONE TOMAHAWK in a novella that I found a rollicking read. Jacob and Luann grow up fast—like in a few pages—after a spectral Hangman sends their parents swinging. Years later, the Hangman returns for a final series of executions amidst an assortment of gritty deputies, reverends, and former slaves. I really enjoyed when Genevieve rips the Hangman a new one in Chapter 10. Would liked to have seen more of the Hangman and his back story. Dig the Kindle cover!

Mr. Cuny tells a tale that is reminiscent of old folklore or campfire stories. It is told in a style that gives such descriptive detail it feels at times you are reading a manuscript from a play, this helps to paint the picture he is trying to create for the reader. I look forward to his next story .

I really like how this book gets straight to the horror, builds the characters off of that and keeps the story flowing.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-pace novella
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2024
A horror novella begins with the murders of Jacob and Luann’s parents by a mysterious figure. They escape. Many years pass, and they go their separate ways before being reunited again. At this point, the figure comes back. How do you kill something that’s already dead?

The story moves along at a fast pace and is a quick read as well. I enjoyed the scene setting at the start of each chapter, there is a play quality about it in the way it’s written, giving the reader a sense of the situation. Some formatting issues make the reading difficult to follow, as to who is speaking and it could have been solved by giving each new speaker a new dialogue line, as well as cutting down the he said, she said responses to a minimum (they tend to slow down the telling and become a little forced)—more care with the editing, in other words. However, if you can get past those issues, it is an entertaining tale in a macabre sense.
