'One of those books where you forget you’re reading and feel you’re there.' Lexie Conyngham
It’s 1550 and Bethia has fled Antwerp, with her infant son, before the jaws of the inquisition clamp down, for the family are accused of secret judaising. She believes they've evaded capture but her husband, Mainard, unbeknownst to her, is caught, imprisoned and alone.
Reaching Geneva, Bethia hopes for respite from a dangerous journey, but it’s a Protestant city state which tolerates no dissent – and she's a Catholic. And why has Mainard not come?
Perhaps he’s already reached Venice where Jews can live openly, the Virgin gazes benignly from every corner and difference is tolerated, for the wealthy at least. Yet much is hidden beneath the smooth waters of this perilous city. Must they again flee to survive…

About the author

Hello!
Would you like three free historical short stories which tell more of the Seton Family? Visit my website vehmasters (just add .com) and pick up your copies of A Bonny Lass, The Sound of Silence and A Long Wait which build on The Seton Chronicles.
I grew up on a farm near St. Andrews in Scotland. St Andrews is famous as the home of golf but it was once a great religious centre and place of pilgrimage prior to the Reformation in 1560 – all largely disregarded when we were at school. The first time I was ever in its castle was aged twelve when our teacher took us on a rare visit – I was captivated.
The group who held the castle under siege for over 14 months, resisting the many attempts to re-take it, called themselves the Castilians and I remember thinking even then it was the perfect title for a book. I just didn't realise how long it would be before I wrote it!
I' ve now written five books chronicling the adventures of the family Seton as they flee across Europe escaping religious persecution desperately seeking a place of safety.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2023I read all three books in a matter of weeks. A lover of history and Scotland, I ate up every detail. I commend you on your knowledge of history at the time and the events unfolding the Reformation. I did check terms and situations as I read for historical accuracy. I have learned much while reading your books and was entertained along the way.
My ancestors were from Scotland and immigrated to Ireland and lived there for 100 years before immigrating to America. They were devout Calvinist Protestants when they arrived in America but from research, I know they were Catholic originally. I often wondered how the Reformation divided and effected families.
Excellent stories! I couldn't put them down. I look foward to other books you may release.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2024The saga of Bethia and Mainard continues, this time in Venice. Problems surrounding them as they navigate through the plight of being Conversos and having family members who are religious fanatics.
The Apostates is a page turner. Definitely a good read!

It is a wonder that we have the benefit of writers such as V.H.MASTERS to help us begin to try to understand the consequences of our actions and of those seemingly important. I await with curiosity and hope the Seton Chronicles Book 4.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023The amount of information gathered through careful research is much appreciated. I nearly stopped reading due to the account of Cardinal Barton’s death in the first book of the series. I would encourage the author to edit that portion (language and actions),
but am glad to have continued reading and have learned much!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2023Enjoyed book #3 of Seton Chronicles with all its twists and turns in 16th century Venice. Catholic, Calvinist Protestants, Converso Judeo-Christians & Jews all interacting in the emerging Mercantile stage of post medieval Europe.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2023Too many characters with multiple names - sometimes depicted by their first name, sometimes depicted by their last name - VERY difficult to follow!
Very complicated plot! Not a fun read at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Apostates; V.E.H. Masters writes compelling historical fiction
The Apostates is the third book in V.E.H. Masters’ trilogy: the Seton Chronicles. Although I came to the story without having read either The Castilians or The Conversos I soon settled into the perilous setting of Europe after the Reformation. At the heart of this story are notions of identity and belief and Masters puts her readers at the heart of the action as her protagonists flee Antwerp in the hope of finding a safe haven in Geneva. Caught between the Spanish Inquisition on one hand and hardheaded Calvinists on the other, her characters inhabit a fluid world where appearances are deceptive and few can be trusted. I found the sense of jeopardy palpable and couldn’t help wondering how I would have coped, moving across borders with my worldly goods and family in tow. My favourite character was undoubtedly Grissel the servant-girl; I found her spirited resilience inspiring. For me Masters’ storytelling is at its strongest when she describes the ordinary people caught up in the upheavals that would lead eventually to the devastation of the Thirty Years War.

3.0 out of 5 stars This the third in the Seton Chronicles is just far fetched fiction.
A pity after a great beginning to the chronicles with the 'Castilians, by the third the 'Apostates' it loses it's depth and becomes a light weight fiction romp.
