Even the most dangerous of creatures has a soft spot. These bad, dangerous dads love their kids to death, but they need romance.

Every year, for a few short weeks, these hot men with a little extra in their blood get to be who they truly are. And this year, life has a surprise for them. Whether they be mage, shifter, vampire, or changeling, these heartbreakingly handsome dads might be looking to tear up the town… but they’ll end up falling in love. All it takes is the right man to bring them to their knees.

Bru Baker has been writing for Dreamspinner Press since 2012. She believes in Happily Ever Afters, but she almost always makes her characters work to get there. Jenn was born disabled, which gives her a deep understanding of what it’s like to be different, but she’s never let it hold her back. It just means she gets pretty good parking.

This anthology had something for everyone: vampires, shifters, witches, and fae. My favorite was Rhys Ford’s Wolf at First Sight, a short story in her Wayward Wolves “series,” which has been stuck at one book for some time, and I hope she writes more of. It’s well worth the money just for this story, but the others are also really good. I was familiar with TA Moore’s books, but I didn’t think this was her best. It got a little confusing at times. Monster Hall Pass, featuring a vampire and a fae, was my second favorite. The anthology starts strong and ends strong, and even if Elf Shot was not my favorite Moore work, the middle two stories were strong, too. This is one of the best anthologies I’ve read.

I love fiction, but I hate anthologies.

I dislike short stories or books with less than 2 or 3 hundred pages.

A short story usually doesn’t have the necessary background and character development to be comprehensive, well rounded, and believable. So, an "Anthology” is something I usually steer away from.

And then, there's the theme and subject matter of a story that abruptly stops, or ends without a satisfying conclusion, or just does not continue, which is so frustrating. Not only is an anthology made up of multiple short stories, but when they are written by multiple authors, it's an even worse experience. You get caught up in one story, it ends too soon, and then you get caught up in another story, so when you pick up the book again after putting it down, you do not even remember who the characters are, let alone what's going on in the story. Aside from that fact, some authors are way better than others, some authors you like and some authors you don't, reading an Anthology book with different authors writing the stories is a hit or miss proposition.

Such was the case for this “Anthology” book.

I actually got this book for the story “Wolf At First Sight” written by Rhys Ford.
Rhys Ford is, by far, my favorite author of any genre or type of fiction. I own all the paperback books she has ever published. And, I've been waiting almost two years for her to publish her new series Chinatown Demons, Bound, book 1, on paperback. I don't and won't read e-books, as I like holding paper books in my hands and turning the pages, plus, I don't like the eyestrain reading from a computer or tablet. Anyway, I felt the need to read whatever I could find from Rhys Ford, so I finally broke down and bought this paperback anthology.

The story “Monster Hall Pass,” by Bru Baker, was actually pretty good, although too short, it could have been made into a really good book. I've never heard of, or read this author before, but was pleasantly surprised at how good the author told the story. So, I think I might look into getting other books by this author.

The story, “Kismet & Cadavers,” by Jenn Moffatt, was good too. I'd never heard of or read this author either. And, although there was a bit of a different writing style that took a slight getting used to, the story was actually somewhat entertaining, if again too short. But, because there are so many authors who are good to excellent writers, I'm not sure I'd search out other books by this author.

The story “Elf Shot,” by TA Moore, was very very very difficult to get through. I'd never read this author, although I'd seen a few books by her that looked as though they might be good. The authors writing style was not enjoyable at all. She kept describing things, sometimes for many paragraphs, in between the dialog between characters, so that by the time you got through reading her descriptions, and got to the answer to a question, or response to a comment in the dialog, you'd forgotten the what the question or comment was in answer to. Then, you had to go back through the paragraphs of text to find out what the heck the characters were talking about. The character development wasn’t that well defined, nor was the story itself easy to understand much of the time. MANY times, I kept thinking I wanted to stop reading the story itself. I mean, it wasn’t 'God Awful', but I guess in some ways it was! I kept flipping the pages to see how many pages were left until the story ended! I continually asked myself if I wanted to continue reading it, or just skip ahead to the story by Rhys Ford that I'd bought this book for in the first place. But, I trudged through and finished reading Elf Shot. However, I went through my Amazon book list and deleted any and all books I was gonna check out by TA Moore. I’ll likely never buy a book nor read another story by this author.

I finally got to the last story of the book, and the one I had bought the book for in the first place, “Wolf At First Sight” by Rhys Ford. I was so excited to begin reading a story by Rhys Ford again, it had been too long and it was so refreshing. As expected, the story was excellent, just the right amount of character and story development. The authors’ story telling ability never ceases to amaze me. Unfortunately, the story was only 95 pages long, far far too short, and it was obvious that it could have gone on and on into a full novel, easily! And, I sorely wished it had. I enjoyed Wolf At First Sight immensely.

So, after reading this entire Anthology, and everything is said and done, was it worth it to buy this book of short stories, and spend all the time reading each of them, just so I could read another story by Rhys Ford?

    Definitely!

I was lucky enough to win an ebook ARC while waiting for my paperback copy to arrived! This is definitely a keeper to be reread again and again. Two of the four authors, TA Moore & Rhys Ford are auto buy authors for me, for a reason, and they didn't disappoint. I loved all 4 stories, so Bru Baker & Jenn Moffat have been added to my auto buy list too!

The world building is excellent, with interesting characters, a bit of mystery and of course, romance! Thoroughly enjoyed all four novellas. A highly recommended read!

tl:dr: two out of four, a better average than most collections I've tried.

'Monster Hall Pass,' by Bru Baker, is pretty good. It needed a better edit.

'Kismet and Cadavers,' by Jenn Moffatt. This felt disjointed to me. Part was the two POVs were hard to tell apart for over half the story. Part was interweaving of one character talking while the POV character thought things, same paragraph. And, there were odd time skips. Needed work.

'Elf Shot,' by TA Moore. Awful title, rich world, engaging characters. Best story so far.

'Wolf at First Sight,' by Rhys Ford. Well. I got close to the end, but only by skimming, and then I gave up. Very wordy, nothing unique, lots of repetition. Definitely the worst of this author I've read.

because i initially bought this mistakenly believing it was 100% RHYS FORD. i have already read a bunch of her stuff and when looking on amazon, i saw she had a SINNER'S GIN novel out, i was thrilled. but this book had 3 other fine writers in it. each of them created a coherent alternative world which would support many series. i hope to see some of them in the future. but for right now, it would seem i had NOT made a mistake at all in buying this!

Three of these stories, for me, were very enjoyable. The first one, Monster Hall Pass by Bru Baker, was my favorite and I was sorry when it ended, although it ended well. Ive not read this author before that I remember but I will definitely check out more. The characters were immensely likable and the story drew me in immediately.

Kismet and Cadavers by Jenn Moffat was also very good. Another new author for me to explore. Again, likable characters and engaging story.

Wolf at First Sight by Rhys Ford was fun and again, great characters. Her description of Joe's finding out about shifters was very well done. Also loved Levi's son Declan's "transformation" at camp. You gotta love teenagers. I was glad to see this author involved in this analogy. I loved her Cole McGinnis and 415 Ink (PLEASE write book 4) books.

I had a little trouble with Elf Shot by TA Moore. (I still haven't forgiven her for giving one of her characters the horrible name of Cloister in one of her other books.) This story was a little too weird and strange for me. It almost felt like a dystopian world and I don't like those kind of stories at all. I was not able to finish this particular one. I will admit that she really is a good writer and my dislike of this story should in no way discourage others from reading her books. This was just not my taste.

I'm not one for vampires, shifters etc so this collection of short stories is outside my usual choice of reading material, that said I thoroughly enjoyed 3 of them, the fourth one I found myself struggling with and eventually abandoned around half way through. I have previously read books by 3 of the authors, including the one whose story I couldn't finish, and do enjoy their regular writing. I don't think that supernatural stories are my thing, but nevertheless I would recommend this anthology as a good story that's well written is always worth exploring. I received a free copy of this book and was in no way obliged to write a positive review.

The authors in this book are high calibre in my books. I read their books all the time but to have them in one book with different stories is great. Each story has it's own twist on hot characters, trouble and love.
